Chương 3

Then back at them.
"Maybe."
The honesty surprised them.
"But I am not going to let fear decide what happens next."
Another sound came from outside.
A car door opening.
Daniel's expression hardened.
He moved toward the entrance.
Ethan reached out.
"Please don't leave us."
Daniel stopped.
The boy's hand was still extended.
For a moment, Daniel saw something familiar in his face.
The fear of being abandoned.
The fear that safety could disappear at any moment.
Daniel walked back and placed a hand on Ethan's shoulder.
"I'm not leaving."
Ethan slowly lowered his hand.
Daniel turned off the interior lights.
The house became darker.
The only light came from the small lamps near the walls.
He guided the children toward a hallway away from the front entrance.
"Stay behind this wall."
Lily looked up at him.
"What if they find us?"
Daniel crouched down so he was at their level.
"Then they will have to get through me first."
The children looked at him.
They believed him.
Outside, footsteps approached the front door.
Daniel stood alone in the entrance hall.
His breathing remained steady.
His eyes stayed focused.
The person outside raised a hand.
A knock echoed through the house.
Three slow knocks.
Not a desperate knock.
Not a frightened knock.
A confident one.
Daniel waited.
The person knocked again.
Then a voice came through the door.
"Daniel."
His face changed.
He knew that voice.
Not well.
But enough.
A voice from a past he had tried to leave behind.
A voice connected to something he thought was over.
Behind the wall, Ethan and Lily watched silently.
Daniel stared at the door.
The night had brought two children to him.
Now it was bringing back something he had spent years avoiding.
He slowly reached for the handle.
But before he opened it, he looked back toward where the children were hiding.
The fear in their eyes reminded him of his promise.
Nobody was taking them.
Not tonight.
Not from his home.
Daniel slowly reached for the handle.
But before he opened it, he looked back toward where the children were hiding.
The fear in their eyes reminded him of his promise.
Nobody was taking them.
Not tonight.
Not from his home.
He turned the handle carefully and opened the door just enough to see who stood outside.
A man in a dark coat stood beneath the outdoor lantern.
He was older than Daniel, perhaps in his late forties, with a calm expression that looked almost rehearsed.
He did not appear angry.
That made him more dangerous.
"Daniel," the man repeated.
Daniel kept one hand on the door.
"Marcus."
The name had not been spoken inside this house for years.
Marcus looked past Daniel into the entrance hall.
His eyes moved quickly, searching.
Daniel noticed.
"You are not here to talk."
Marcus gave a small smile.
"I heard you had visitors."
Daniel's expression remained cold.
"You were following children."
Marcus tilted his head slightly.
"Those children are not what you think."
Daniel felt his anger rise, but he kept control.
"Then tell me what they are."
Marcus looked at him silently for a moment.
The silence itself was an answer.
"You always did this," Marcus finally said.
"Did what?"
"Protect people before knowing the whole story."
Daniel stepped closer to the doorway.
"Maybe because someone has to."
The smile disappeared from Marcus's face.
"Those children are connected to something bigger than you understand."
Daniel looked back toward the hallway where Ethan and Lily were hiding.
Then he looked at Marcus again.
"Are they in danger because of what they know?"
Marcus did not answer.
That was enough.
Daniel closed the door slightly.
Marcus stopped him with his voice.
"Daniel."
The warning tone was familiar.
Years ago, Daniel had listened to that voice.
He had trusted it.
He had regretted it.
"You don't want to make the same mistake twice," Marcus said.
Daniel's hand tightened around the door.
"You mean trusting you?"
Marcus's expression changed for the first time.
A small flash of irritation appeared.
"You have no idea what those children are carrying."
Daniel looked toward the dark driveway.
Then back at Marcus.
"Neither do you."
Marcus stepped closer.
"They found something they were never supposed to find."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Marcus looked toward the house again.
"The truth."
The word stayed in the air.
Daniel felt the weight of it.
He had spent years believing his past was finished.
But now two frightened children had arrived carrying pieces of a mystery connected to someone he once knew.
Daniel opened the door wider.
"Tell me the truth."
Marcus looked surprised.
"Here?"
"Yes."
A long pause followed.
Then Marcus looked away.
"I can't."
Daniel almost laughed.
"You came to my house in the middle of the night and you can't explain why?"
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Because if I say it here, they will know."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Who?"
Marcus looked directly at him.
"The people who caused all of this."
Before Daniel could respond, a quiet sound came from behind him.
A small movement.
Ethan.
The boy had stepped slightly away from the wall.
Marcus noticed.
His expression changed immediately.
"He's here."
Daniel moved in front of the hallway.
"No."
Marcus looked at him.
"You don't understand."
Daniel's voice became firm.
"You're not coming inside."
For several seconds, neither man moved.
The tension between them was stronger than any argument.
It was the tension of two people who knew each other's past.
Finally, Marcus stepped back.
"Ask the boy about the photograph."
Daniel froze.
"What photograph?"
But Marcus was already turning away.
Daniel opened the door slightly.
"Marcus."
The man stopped.
"If you are part of this, I will find out."
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
"I know."
Then he walked back toward the waiting vehicle.
Daniel watched until the car disappeared down the road.
Only then did he close the door.
The house became silent again.
But the silence felt heavier.
May you like
He returned to the hallway.
Ethan and Lily were standing there.
