Chương 5

A small object placed on the ground.

Daniel opened the side door carefully.

The cold night air moved across his face.

He stepped outside.

The garden was empty.

Whoever had been there was gone.

He walked toward the object.

It was another photograph.

His stomach tightened.

He picked it up.

This one was newer.

It showed Claire standing with Ethan and Lily.

But someone had drawn a dark line across the image.

Someone wanted him to see it.

Someone wanted him to understand.

Daniel looked around the garden.

"You want me to find something."

His voice disappeared into the night.

No answer came.

He returned inside and locked the door.

When he came back to the kitchen, Ethan was standing there.

The boy had ignored his instruction.

Daniel should have been frustrated.

Instead, he understood.

The boy had spent too much time depending only on himself.

"What did you find?" Ethan asked.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

Ethan looked at it.

His face changed.

"You found this?"

Daniel nodded.

"Someone left it outside."

Ethan became pale.

"They know we're here."

Daniel looked at him.

"Who?"

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know their names."

"Then tell me what you do know."

The boy looked toward Lily.

She was still sitting quietly, holding the blanket around her shoulders.

Ethan took a deep breath.

"Before we came here, Mom was hiding things."

"What things?"

"Boxes."

Daniel waited.

"She kept papers and pictures."

"Where?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Under the floor."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"At your house?"

Ethan nodded.

"She said if anything happened, we couldn't let them find it."

Daniel walked back toward the photograph.

The mystery was becoming clearer.

Someone had been searching for Claire's secrets.

Someone had followed the children.

Someone wanted whatever Claire had hidden.

"Where is the house?" Daniel asked.

Ethan looked nervous.

"We can't go back."

"I didn't say you were going back alone."

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

The children looked surprised.

"You're coming with us?" Ethan asked.

Daniel looked at both children.

"No."

A moment of disappointment crossed Ethan's face.

Then Daniel continued.

"You are staying here."

The boy looked confused.

"I need to check something first."

Ethan shook his head.

"But if they are there..."

Daniel crouched down.

"Ethan."

The boy looked at him.

"You have been protecting Lily all night."

The boy's eyes became emotional.

"You did what you had to do."

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Now let an adult protect you."

For a moment, Ethan did not respond.

Then he nodded.

It was a small movement.

But Daniel could see how much trust it required.

He walked toward the back room where he kept old files and personal belongings.

There were things from his past he had avoided looking at for years.

But tonight, avoiding them was no longer possible.

He opened a locked cabinet.

Inside were old documents.

Old photographs.

Old memories.

At the bottom was a file with Claire's name written across it.

He had not touched it in years.

His hands paused before opening it.

Inside was everything he knew about the night she disappeared.

But now, for the first time, he noticed something he had missed before.

A small note hidden behind the final page.

A handwriting he recognized immediately.

Claire's handwriting.

Daniel unfolded the paper.

Only one sentence was written.

If they find the children, they will come for the truth next.

Daniel felt the room go completely still.

The children were not the end of the mystery.

They were the beginning.

And whatever Claire had been protecting was still out there, waiting.

And whatever Claire had been protecting was still out there, waiting.

Daniel read the sentence again and again, hoping the meaning would change.

It did not.

Claire had known this day might come.

She had known the children might need him.

And she had trusted him enough to leave them with his name.

For years, Daniel had believed Claire abandoned him.

Now he realized she might have been trying to reach him all along.

He carefully folded the note and placed it inside his jacket.

He did not want the children to see the fear on his face.

But Ethan was already watching him.

The boy noticed everything.

"Is it bad?" Ethan asked.

Daniel looked at him.

"It means your mother was planning for this."

Ethan's expression changed.

"She knew someone would come?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Lily hugged the blanket tighter.

"Is my mom scared?"

The question was almost impossible to answer.

Daniel looked at the little girl.

He thought about Claire.

He remembered her courage.

He remembered the way she always protected people even when she was afraid.

"No," Daniel finally said.

"Your mom was brave."

Lily looked down.

"She was always brave."

Daniel felt the pain in those words.

Children should not have to describe their parents in the past tense.

He closed the file.

"We need to find out what happened."

Ethan looked at him.

"Are you going to help us?"

Daniel did not hesitate.

"Yes."

The boy stared at him for several seconds.

Then he slowly nodded.

For the first time since arriving, Ethan looked less like someone preparing to run.

He looked like a child again.

Daniel grabbed his keys and checked the locks around the house.

Every window.

Every door.

Every possible entrance.

The children watched quietly.

They saw the difference between someone who was afraid and someone who was prepared.

Daniel was not fearless.

He was simply willing to stand there anyway.

Before leaving the room, he stopped near the front door.

A thought suddenly crossed his mind.

Marcus had known they were there.

That meant someone had been watching the house.

Someone had followed the children all the way here.

Daniel turned toward the windows.

"We need to leave carefully."

Ethan immediately understood.

"They're watching."

"Maybe."

Daniel looked at him.

May you like

"But we are going to make sure they don't know what we do next."

He moved the children through the back entrance instead of the front.
