Chương 8

“Emma, listen to me carefully.”
She heard the fear in his voice.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at Michael.
Then back at the phone.
“Do not let her leave.”
Silence.
“Daniel, what are you talking about?”
“I found something.”
Emma’s breathing changed.
“What?”
Daniel looked at the documents.
“I think Margaret has been hiding the truth.”
The line went quiet.
Then Emma whispered.
“No.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He understood why she reacted that way.
Because Margaret was not just a friend.
She was family.
But the evidence was there.
And the person who had tried to separate them had been closer than they ever imagined.
“Emma.”
Her voice trembled.
“She’s holding Lily right now.”
Daniel’s entire body went cold.
“What?”
“She came in ten minutes ago.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Emma, move away from her.”
“Daniel…”
“Please.”
The fear in his voice finally reached her.
She moved.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And then she noticed something.
Margaret was no longer smiling.
The kind expression she had worn for months was gone.
For the first time, Emma saw something else.
Fear.
Margaret looked at her.
And whispered one sentence.
“I was hoping you would never find out.”
“I was hoping you would never find out.”
Emma stood frozen in the middle of the apartment.
Lily was no longer in Margaret’s arms.
Emma had already moved closer and taken her back, holding the baby tightly against her chest.
But Margaret’s words remained in the room.
They were not the words of someone surprised.
They were the words of someone who had been waiting.
“Find out what?” Emma whispered.
Margaret looked at her for a long moment.
The woman who had always seemed calm and gentle now looked exhausted.
Older.
Like she had been carrying a secret for years.
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Emma, do not let her explain until I get there.”
Margaret heard him.
She closed her eyes.
“So Daniel knows.”
Emma stared.
“How?”
No one answered immediately.
Then Margaret slowly sat down.
“I never wanted it to happen this way.”
Emma kept her distance.
“Who changed the records?”
Margaret looked at Lily.
“I did.”
The confession felt impossible.
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
Margaret looked up.
“Yes.”
Emma’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“Why?”
Margaret looked toward the window.
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
“Protect me?”
Emma’s voice cracked.
“You separated me from Daniel.”
Margaret looked down.
“I thought I was saving you from making the same mistake I made.”
Emma became still.
“What mistake?”
Margaret took a deep breath.
“Trusting someone who was not ready to face the truth.”
Emma held Lily closer.
“You don’t get to decide my life.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Tears appeared in Margaret’s eyes.
“I know now.”
The front door opened.
Daniel entered with Michael behind him.
His eyes immediately moved to Emma and Lily.
Then to Margaret.
The disappointment on his face was worse than anger.
“Why?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Afraid of what?”
“That you would both repeat the past.”
Michael looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at him.
“You know exactly what it means.”
Michael froze.
Daniel noticed.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret slowly stood.
“Your brother was not the only one who remembered what happened.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Margaret looked at him.
“I knew about your accident.”
The room became silent.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
“Because I was there.”
Emma looked between them.
“What?”
Margaret’s voice became quiet.
“Years ago, before Emma ever met you, I worked at the hospital where you were treated.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“You knew me?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Margaret looked away.
“Because after the accident, you were different.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You woke up angry.”
“You refused to talk about what happened.”
“You pushed everyone away.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“She knew.”
Daniel looked at his brother.
“You knew too?”
Michael lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel felt surrounded by a past he had buried.
Margaret continued.
“When Emma became pregnant, I recognized your name.”
Emma looked shocked.
“You knew from the beginning?”
Margaret nodded.
“I knew Daniel had never told you about his medical history.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Because I forgot.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Yes.”
Emma looked at Daniel.
“What medical history?”
Daniel took a breath.
“The accident caused damage.”
“The doctors warned me I might never have children.”
Emma became quiet.
“But Lily is your daughter.”
“Yes.”
Margaret nodded.
“That is why I panicked.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because you thought she wasn’t mine?”
“No.”
The answer surprised everyone.
“Then why?”
Margaret looked at Emma.
“Because someone else knew.”
Emma frowned.
“Who?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with regret.
“The person who contacted me.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who contacted you?”
Margaret hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old phone.
“I received messages before Lily was born.”
Daniel looked at it.
“From who?”
Margaret unlocked the phone.
A message appeared.
Everyone looked.
The sender’s name was hidden.
But the words were clear.
You need to stop this child from destroying his life.
Emma covered her mouth.
Margaret continued scrolling.
“They told me Daniel would leave once he discovered the truth.”
Daniel looked angry.
“And you believed them?”
“I was afraid.”
“You changed records.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to Emma.”
“Yes.”
“You made us suffer.”
Margaret lowered her head.
“Yes.”
The honesty made the anger harder.
Because there was no excuse.
Only regret.
Emma looked at her.
“Why didn’t you just tell me?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Because I saw myself in you.”
Emma said nothing.
“I was young once.”
“I trusted someone.”
“I ignored signs.”
“And I paid the price.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“When I saw you struggling, I wanted to protect you.”
Emma looked down at Lily.
“But you took away my choice.”
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel walked closer.
“Who sent those messages?”
Margaret looked at the phone.
“I never found out.”
Michael stepped forward.
“But someone knew about the medical records.”
Everyone looked at him.
Margaret nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Then we were all manipulated.”
The truth settled over them.
Michael had acted out of anger.
Margaret had acted out of fear.
Daniel had acted out of pain.
Emma had acted out of survival.
And somewhere in the middle of all their mistakes, someone had used their weaknesses against them.
The investigation took several weeks.
The hospital reviewed old records.
The messages were traced.
The fake accounts were examined.
Eventually, they found the source.
It was not Margaret.
It was not Michael.
It was someone from Daniel’s old business circle.
A person who had blamed Daniel for a failed project years earlier.
Someone who knew about the accident.
Someone who knew about Daniel’s fears.
Someone who wanted revenge.
The truth was finally exposed.
But the damage remained.
Some wounds disappeared quickly.
Others needed time.
Months passed.
Emma and Daniel did not pretend everything was perfect.
They went to counseling.
They talked.
They argued.
They learned how to listen.
Some days were difficult.
Some days old pain returned.
But they stayed.
That was the difference.
Daniel never missed another appointment.
Never ignored another call.
Never walked away when things became difficult.
Emma slowly learned that trusting again did not mean forgetting.
It meant choosing to believe someone could change.
Michael apologized.
It took time before Daniel accepted it.
But eventually, the brothers began rebuilding their relationship.
Not the same relationship they had before.
Something more honest.
Margaret also apologized.
Emma did not forgive her immediately.
But one afternoon, while Lily was sleeping in her arms, Emma finally said something Margaret never expected.
“I understand why you were scared.”
Margaret cried.
“But I need you to understand something.”
Margaret nodded.
“My life belongs to me.”
“I know.”
“My choices belong to me.”
“I know.”
“And Lily deserves people who protect her without controlling her.”
Margaret looked at the baby.
“You’re right.”
Years later, Daniel still remembered the night everything almost fell apart.
But he also remembered the moment everything changed.
A small hospital room.
A newborn baby.
A woman who had been carrying too much alone.
He learned that love was not proven by never making mistakes.
It was proven by what people did after.
One evening, Daniel sat beside Emma while Lily played on the floor.
Emma looked at him.
“Do you ever think about how close we came to losing everything?”
Daniel nodded.
“All the time.”
She smiled softly.
“But we didn’t.”
He looked at Lily.
“No.”
Emma leaned against him.
“Why?”
Daniel thought about the answer.
Because they had finally stopped running.
Because they had finally faced the truth.
Because they had chosen each other again.
“Because we learned that a family is not built by people who never break.”
He looked at Emma.
May you like
“It’s built by people who decide to rebuild.”
And this time, neither of them walked away.
