Chương 2

Her eyes filled with emotion.

For months, she had believed strength meant never falling apart.

She had forgotten that needing help was not the same as being weak.

Daniel took a slow breath.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked at him.

The apology was quiet.

It was not dramatic.

It was not enough to erase everything.

But it was the first honest thing he had said.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” Daniel continued.

“But I know I don’t want to lose you both.”

Emma looked away.

A part of her wanted to believe him.

Another part was afraid of being disappointed again.

The baby suddenly opened her eyes.

The tiny movement drew all three adults’ attention.

Emma looked down immediately.

Her expression softened.

Daniel stepped closer but stopped before reaching them.

He waited.

For the first time, he did not demand.

He did not push.

He simply waited.

Emma noticed.

That small change meant more than any promise.

“You can see her,” Emma whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Really?”

She nodded slowly.

“But be careful.”

He approached as if he was walking toward something fragile and precious.

His hand trembled slightly as he touched the edge of the blanket.

The baby’s tiny fingers wrapped around one of his fingers.

Daniel froze.

His eyes filled with emotion.

The anger disappeared.

The fear disappeared.

For a few seconds, he was simply a father meeting his child.

Emma watched silently.

She had wanted this moment for so long.

But she also knew one moment could not repair months of pain.

Margaret stood nearby, watching the three of them.

She knew forgiveness was not a single decision.

It was a road.

A long road built from honesty, patience, and choices made every day.

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I should have been here.”

Emma nodded slightly.

“Yes.”

He accepted the answer.

No excuses.

No arguments.

“I can’t change what happened,” he said.

“But I can choose what happens next.”

Emma looked at him for a long moment.

The room remained quiet.

The baby rested peacefully between them.

The past was still there.

The hurt was still there.

But for the first time in a long time, there was a small space where something new could begin.

And neither of them knew yet how difficult the road ahead would be.

The next morning arrived quietly, but the silence inside the hospital room felt heavier than before.

Emma had barely slept.

Every time the baby moved, she opened her eyes.

Every time the machines made a small sound, her body reacted before her mind could tell her everything was fine.

She sat beside the window with the newborn resting against her chest, watching the first light of day spread across the empty streets outside.

For a few minutes, she allowed herself to simply breathe.

Daniel had stayed through the night.

He had not slept much either.

He sat in the corner chair, his head lowered, staring at the floor.

The man who had walked into the room full of anger now looked completely different.

He looked like someone finally forced to face the consequences of his choices.

Margaret entered quietly carrying two cups of coffee.

She placed one beside Emma and one beside Daniel.

“Neither of you looks like you rested,” she said.

Emma gave a tired smile.

“I don’t think either of us knows how anymore.”

Margaret looked between them.

“That can change.”

Neither answered.

The baby made a soft sound, and Emma immediately looked down.

Her entire expression softened.

Daniel noticed the change.

He had seen Emma angry.

He had seen her afraid.

But this was different.

This was the woman who had spent every moment protecting someone more important than herself.

“What did you name her?” Daniel asked quietly.

Emma looked surprised.

“You don’t know?”

His face fell slightly.

“No.”

The pain in her eyes returned.

“We talked about names before everything happened.”

Daniel looked down.

“I remember.”

“You stopped answering before I could tell you.”

His shoulders dropped.

Emma looked at the baby.

“Her name is Lily.”

Daniel repeated it softly.

“Lily.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“She has your eyes.”

Emma looked at him.

“She has your stubbornness.”

For the first time in a long time, a small moment of warmth passed between them.

But the peace did not last.

A knock came at the door.

Emma immediately became tense.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?”

She did not answer.

The door opened slowly, and a hospital worker stepped inside holding a folder.

“Emma, I need you to confirm some information before discharge paperwork can be completed.”

Emma nodded.

“Okay.”

Daniel stood.

“I’ll step out.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

The word surprised both of them.

She took a breath.

“I think you should hear this too.”

The worker opened the folder.

“There is one issue with the records.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What issue?”

The worker glanced between them.

“The emergency contact information was updated several weeks ago.”

Emma’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“Updated by who?”

The worker looked at Emma.

“She requested the change.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

Emma looked away.

The room became silent again.

“I didn’t know where you were,” Emma said.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“So you removed me?”

“No.”

Her voice became emotional.

“I removed the number that never answered.”

Daniel looked hurt.

But this time, he did not become defensive.

He listened.

“I was alone,” Emma continued.

“I was scared.”

She looked at the baby.

“I had doctors asking me questions, I had bills, I had appointments, and I had no idea if you even cared anymore.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“I cared.”

Emma looked at him.

“Then why did it feel like I was the only one fighting?”

He had no response.

The hospital worker quietly closed the folder.

“I’ll give you some privacy.”

After leaving, the door clicked shut.

Daniel remained standing.

He looked like he wanted to say something but could not find the right words.

May you like

Finally, he sat down.

“I made a mistake,” he said.
