Chương 7
And now he had to decide what to do with the truth.
Daniel stayed in the empty ballroom long after the call ended.
The phone remained in his hand, but he no longer heard the sounds around him.
The information had changed something inside him.
For hours, he had believed the entire burden belonged to Emily.
He believed she had been the only person who made a choice to hide the truth.
But now another question appeared.
How many people had known?
How many people had watched him build a life without knowing the full story?
Daniel slowly sat down in one of the chairs near the aisle.
The same aisle where he had imagined Emily walking toward him with happiness in her eyes.
He remembered that moment.
He remembered believing he had finally found someone who trusted him completely.
Now he wondered if he had ever truly known the people closest to him.
His father had always been someone he respected.
A man who taught him that honesty mattered.
A man who told him that family should protect each other.
But now Daniel struggled with the contradiction.
Protecting someone by hiding the truth was still a form of deception.
He looked at the empty space in front of him.
For the first time, he understood that the wedding had not been destroyed by one secret.
It had been destroyed by years of silence.
Daniel drove home slowly.
He did not call Emily.
He did not call his father.
He needed to think without anyone influencing him.
When he arrived, the house felt unfamiliar.
It was the same place where he and Emily had planned their future.
The same walls where they had laughed.
The same rooms where they had talked about dreams.
But now every memory carried a shadow.
He walked into the living room and saw a framed photograph from their engagement.
Emily was smiling.
Daniel was smiling.
They looked completely certain about the future.
He picked up the frame.
For a moment, he almost convinced himself that the happiness in the picture was fake.
Then he stopped.
Because it was not fake.
That was the hardest truth.
The love had been real.
The moments had been real.
The betrayal had also been real.
Both things could exist at the same time.
The next morning, Daniel drove to his father’s house.
Richard Blackwood opened the door and immediately noticed something was wrong.
He looked at his son’s face.
“You know.”
Daniel stepped inside.
The response was enough.
Richard did not ask what he meant.
He already knew.
“How long?”
Richard looked down.
“Daniel.”
“How long did you know?”
The older man sighed.
“Since before you met her.”
The answer hurt more than Daniel expected.
He turned away.
“You knew about Sophie.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“And you said nothing.”
Richard looked at him.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Daniel turned back.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
His eyes were filled with disappointment.
“But nobody protected me.”
Richard remained silent.
Daniel walked further into the room.
“You let me fall in love with someone while knowing she had a child.”
“I knew.”
“And you said nothing.”
Richard lowered his head.
“I made a mistake.”
Daniel laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.”
His voice became heavier.
“Keeping a child’s existence from someone is a choice.”
Richard accepted the words.
“I know.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Because I knew what happened between our families.”
Daniel waited.
“After your mother died, I became obsessed with protecting you.”
Richard’s voice became slower.
“I watched people use each other for money, reputation, and power.”
Daniel shook his head.
“So you decided to control my life instead.”
Richard looked hurt.
“That was never my intention.”
“But it was the result.”
The room became quiet.
Richard sat down.
“There is more you need to know.”
Daniel almost closed his eyes.
He was tired of hearing those words.
Every person who had hidden something from him seemed to have another layer of truth waiting.
“What now?”
Richard looked at him.
“Emily did not leave Sophie because she wanted to.”
Daniel frowned.
“I already know she was pressured.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
Daniel waited.
“Her family planned to take Sophie away.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Richard nodded.
“They believed Emily was too young and unstable to raise a child.”
Daniel’s anger returned.
“She was twenty-three.”
“Yes.”
Richard looked down.
“They used their influence to convince her she would lose custody.”
Daniel felt a deep sadness.
He thought about Emily standing in the ballroom.
The fear in her eyes.
The way she reacted whenever the truth came close.
Suddenly, some pieces began to make sense.
“She was afraid.”
Richard nodded.
“She was terrified.”
Daniel looked away.
“But she still lied to me.”
“Yes.”
Richard did not defend her.
“She did.”
That honesty surprised Daniel.
Richard continued.
“Two things can be true at the same time.”
Daniel looked at him.
“She was hurt.”
A pause.
“And she hurt you.”
Daniel sat quietly.
Those words stayed with him.
Because they were exactly what he was struggling to understand.
He could acknowledge Emily’s pain without pretending his own pain did not matter.
Later that day, Daniel went to see Emily.
Not because everything was forgiven.
It was not.
Not because he had made a decision.
He had not.
But because he needed to talk to her without anger controlling the conversation.
Emily opened the door and froze when she saw him.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Emily stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Daniel entered quietly.
Sophie was sitting at the table drawing.
When she saw him, her face brightened.
“Daniel.”
The simple happiness in her voice made his heart ache.
He smiled slightly.
“Hey, Sophie.”
She looked at him carefully.
“Are you still mad?”
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I’m still trying to understand everything.”
May you like
Sophie nodded.
“That’s okay.”
