Chương 5

Everything looked beautiful.
Everything except the people standing inside it.
“I need to ask about your family,” Daniel said.
Emily looked tense again.
“They were involved.”
Daniel turned back.
“Tell me how.”
Emily hesitated.
Margaret stepped forward.
“Her parents believed reputation mattered more than anything else.”
Emily looked down.
“They were afraid of what people would say.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“So they convinced you to hide your own daughter.”
Emily shook her head.
“They didn’t force me.”
She took a deep breath.
“But they made me believe I had no other option.”
Margaret nodded.
“They told her that a child without a traditional family would ruin her future.”
Daniel looked at Sophie.
His expression became sad.
“A child was never the problem.”
Emily looked at him.
“I know that now.”
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
“You knew that then too.”
The words were painful because they were true.
Emily wiped her tears.
“You’re right.”
She looked at Sophie.
“I knew she was never the problem.”
Sophie watched her mother.
For the first time that night, she saw Emily stop running from the truth.
Daniel noticed the change.
The woman standing before him was still the woman who had hurt him.
But she was also a woman who had been afraid for a long time.
That did not erase her choices.
But it explained the fear behind them.
Margaret walked toward the center of the room.
“There is one more thing Daniel needs to know.”
Emily immediately looked alarmed.
“Margaret.”
The older woman did not stop.
“He deserves the complete truth.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What is it?”
Emily’s face became pale.
She looked at Sophie.
Then at Daniel.
“The reason I came back into your life was not random.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
Emily took a shaky breath.
“When I met you, I already knew who you were.”
The room became still.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew me before we met?”
Emily nodded slowly.
“I knew your name.”
His face tightened.
“Why?”
Emily looked ashamed.
“Because my family had connections with yours.”
Daniel searched her face.
“What connections?”
Margaret answered.
“Years ago, your father’s company was involved in a dispute with Emily’s family.”
Daniel looked confused.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I never heard about this.”
“Because the adults involved made sure you wouldn’t.”
The revelation added another layer to the night.
Daniel had thought he understood the betrayal.
Now he realized there were years of history hidden behind it.
Emily stepped closer.
“I did not meet you to use you.”
Daniel looked at her carefully.
“Then why did you approach me?”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I wanted to know who you were.”
“That is not an answer.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
She took a deep breath.
“When I first saw you, I expected someone like the people I grew up around.”
Daniel stayed silent.
“But you weren’t.”
Her voice softened.
“You were kind.”
The confession made the room quieter.
“You listened.”
Emily looked down.
“You made me believe I could become someone better.”
Daniel looked away.
The words affected him.
Because part of him remembered those early days.
The way Emily laughed.
The way she made him feel understood.
The way he believed he had finally found someone honest.
But now every memory carried a question.
“How much of our relationship was real?”
Emily looked devastated.
“All of it.”
Daniel studied her face.
“I loved you before you knew everything.”
She paused.
“And I love you now.”
The words were simple.
But they carried years of regret.
Daniel did not answer.
He could not.
Love was still there.
That was the hardest part.
If he had stopped caring, leaving would have been easy.
But he cared too much.
Sophie moved closer to Emily.
The child quietly held her mother’s hand.
Emily looked down at her daughter.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophie whispered.
“I know.”
Daniel watched them.
The sight reminded him that this was not just about his pain.
There was a little girl who needed stability more than anyone needed revenge.
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“You do not have to decide everything tonight.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know.”
He looked around the ballroom one final time.
The place where he had expected to start his marriage had become the place where he discovered his family.
Broken.
Complicated.
But real.
He walked toward the entrance.
Emily’s face changed.
“Are you leaving?”
Daniel stopped.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he turned back.
“I need time.”
Emily nodded, even though the answer hurt.
“I understand.”
Daniel looked at Sophie.
“But I’m not leaving her.”
Sophie’s eyes widened.
A small feeling of hope appeared on her face.
Daniel continued.
“I don’t know what happens between us.”
He looked at Emily.
“But I know she deserves someone who stays.”
Emily cried quietly.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because for the first time, she believed there might still be a chance to repair what had been broken.
But because for the first time, she believed there might still be a chance to repair what had been broken.
The ballroom doors closed slowly behind Daniel as he stepped outside.
The sound echoed through the empty room.
Emily watched until he disappeared from sight.
Every part of her wanted to follow him.
Every part of her wanted to explain one more thing, say one more sentence, prove that her love had been real.
But she knew she had already taken away his ability to choose once.
She could not do it again.
She stood silently beneath the fading golden lights.
The wedding decorations that once represented happiness now felt like reminders of everything she had hidden.
Sophie looked up at her mother.
“Is he coming back?”
Emily looked at her daughter.
The question was innocent.
It carried no anger.
Only hope.
Emily knelt down and held Sophie tightly.
“I don’t know.”
Sophie’s expression fell slightly.
May you like
“But he was nice to me.”
Emily nodded through her tears.
