Chương 3

Daniel took a step back.
His voice became unsteady.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emily cried silently.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That you would leave.”
Daniel looked away.
For a moment, he could not speak.
He remembered every conversation they had shared.
Every night they talked about building a family.
Every time Emily smiled when he mentioned children.
And now he wondered how many moments had been built on something she never told him.
Margaret spoke softly.
“She thought hiding the truth would protect everyone.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But it destroyed everything.”
Nobody responded.
Because everyone knew he was right.
Emily slowly walked closer.
“Daniel, I never wanted to hurt you.”
He looked at her.
“You hurt me every day by letting me believe something that wasn’t true.”
The words were not shouted.
They were worse because they were calm.
Emily stopped walking.
The distance between them felt larger than the entire ballroom.
Sophie looked at Daniel with tears in her eyes.
“Are you mad at me?”
The question broke the silence.
Daniel immediately looked at her.
His expression changed.
“No.”
His answer came quickly.
Almost desperately.
“No, Sophie.”
The little girl wiped her tears.
“I didn’t want to ruin your wedding.”
Daniel’s eyes softened.
“You didn’t ruin anything.”
He looked toward Emily.
The pain was still there.
The betrayal was still there.
But when he looked back at Sophie, something else appeared.
A connection he could not deny.
Margaret watched quietly.
She knew the hardest part was not revealing the secret.
The hardest part was what everyone would choose to do after knowing it.
The hardest part was not revealing the secret.
The hardest part was what everyone would choose to do after knowing it.
Daniel stood in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by flowers, lights, and people who had come to celebrate a marriage that suddenly felt completely different.
He looked at Sophie again.
The little girl’s face carried years of uncertainty that he had never noticed before.
He wondered how many times she had looked at him and wanted to say something.
He wondered how many moments he had missed because he did not know the truth.
Sophie slowly lowered her eyes.
“I thought you would hate me.”
Daniel felt something break inside him.
He immediately shook his head.
“Why would you ever think that?”
The child’s voice became smaller.
“Because I heard people say secrets make people angry.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
For a moment, he saw not just the woman who had hidden the truth, but the mother who had been carrying fear alone.
But the pain of being deceived was still there.
He was not ready to forgive.
He was not ready to forget.
But he knew one thing.
None of this was Sophie’s fault.
Daniel slowly knelt down so he was closer to her height.
“You did nothing wrong.”
Sophie looked at him carefully.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
His voice softened.
“Really.”
The little girl wiped her cheeks with her hands.
A small moment of relief appeared on her face.
Emily watched from a few steps away.
Seeing Daniel comfort Sophie hurt in a way she did not expect.
Not because he was being kind.
Because she realized he could have been there for them both if she had trusted him with the truth.
Margaret looked at Emily.
“You were afraid of losing him.”
Emily nodded weakly.
“But you never gave him the chance to choose.”
Emily looked down.
The words were painful because they were true.
Daniel slowly stood again.
The ballroom remained quiet.
The guests who had witnessed the confrontation now saw something different.
They saw a family trying to understand the damage created by years of silence.
Daniel turned toward Emily.
“I need to know everything.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Not pieces.”
His voice remained calm.
“Not the version you think will hurt less.”
Emily nodded.
“The whole truth.”
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“Start from the beginning.”
Margaret glanced at Emily before speaking.
“She was twenty-three when everything happened.”
Emily looked away.
“She had just found out she was pregnant.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
He looked at Sophie.
“She was alone?”
Margaret nodded.
“She was young and terrified.”
Emily whispered.
“I thought I could handle it.”
Margaret continued.
“But she made mistakes.”
The room became tense again.
Emily closed her eyes.
Daniel noticed.
“What mistakes?”
Margaret took a breath.
“She was afraid of disappointing everyone around her.”
Emily’s tears continued falling.
“She made choices because she thought they would protect the people she loved.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But those choices hurt them anyway.”
Emily nodded.
“I know.”
For the first time, there was no attempt to defend herself.
No excuse.
Only regret.
Sophie looked between the adults.
She did not fully understand every detail.
But she understood that people were hurting.
Daniel noticed her expression.
He lowered his voice.
“Where is Sophie’s father?”
The question changed the atmosphere.
Emily became completely still.
Margaret looked at the floor.
That reaction answered more than words.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What happened?”
Emily hesitated.
Then she finally spoke.
“He left before she was born.”
Daniel waited.
“He promised he would come back.”
Her voice trembled.
“But he never did.”
A painful silence followed.
Daniel looked at Sophie.
The little girl stood quietly, holding the edge of her dress.
“How long have you been raising her alone?”
Emily swallowed.
“Most of her life.”
Daniel looked at the wedding ring on his hand.
Then at Emily’s ring.
Everything suddenly felt complicated.
He had imagined their future so many times.
A home.
A family.
Children running through the house.
He had wanted that life.
And now he discovered that part of it had already existed without him.
“What did you plan to do after today?”
Emily looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
“After we got married.”
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Daniel…”
“What was your plan?”
Emily could not answer immediately.
The silence told him enough.
May you like
He stepped back slightly.
“You were going to keep this from me forever.”
