Chương 4

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“No, I wasn’t.”

“Then when?”

Emily struggled to find the words.

“I thought I would tell you when the time was right.”

Daniel looked at her.

“The time was right when you decided to build a life with me.”

Emily lowered her head.

“I know.”

The honesty in her response made the moment even harder.

Daniel looked away.

He wanted to be angry.

He wanted to walk away.

But every time he looked at Sophie, he remembered that leaving would not only affect Emily.

A child was standing in the middle of this.

A child who had already lost too much.

Margaret stepped closer.

“There is something else.”

Daniel looked at her.

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Margaret’s expression remained serious.

“He needs to know.”

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What else?”

Emily’s face became pale.

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

Margaret spoke quietly.

“The reason Emily disappeared all those years ago was not only because she was afraid.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Then why?”

Margaret looked at the guests.

Then back at him.

“Because someone convinced her that telling the truth would destroy Sophie’s life.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Emily’s eyes filled with fear.

She did not answer.

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“Who told you that?”

Emily looked toward the entrance doors.

The place where Margaret had appeared moments earlier.

Then she looked back at Daniel.

“My family.”

The answer shocked him.

“Your family?”

Emily nodded.

“They thought Sophie was a mistake that needed to be hidden.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That is why you kept her secret?”

Emily cried harder.

“I was young.”

Her voice broke.

“I was scared.”

Margaret added softly.

“And she was manipulated.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

The anger in his face became mixed with confusion.

He realized the story was not as simple as betrayal.

There were more people involved.

More decisions.

More pain.

But that did not remove the fact that she had hidden something that changed his entire life.

The wedding guests began quietly leaving the ballroom.

One by one, they walked away from the scene.

The celebration was over.

The flowers remained.

The decorations remained.

But the meaning of the day had changed forever.

Soon, only a small group remained.

Daniel.

Emily.

Sophie.

And Margaret.

The four of them stood beneath the golden lights in a room that no longer felt like a wedding hall.

It felt like a place where a broken family was deciding whether it could be rebuilt.

Daniel looked at Sophie.

Then he looked at Emily.

“I don’t know what happens next.”

Emily nodded through her tears.

“I understand.”

“But I know Sophie deserves better than secrets.”

Emily closed her eyes.

The words hurt because she knew they were true.

Sophie slowly reached for Daniel’s hand.

He looked down at her small fingers holding his.

For the first time that night, his expression softened completely.

He squeezed her hand gently.

And in that quiet moment, surrounded by everything that had fallen apart, Daniel realized the truth was painful.

But it was also the first honest thing they had shared.

But it was also the first honest thing they had shared.

The silence that followed felt different from the silence before.

It was no longer filled with suspicion and hidden fears.

It was filled with the painful uncertainty of what came next.

Daniel looked down at Sophie’s hand in his.

The small gesture carried more weight than any explanation.

For years, this child had lived with a truth that she was not allowed to say.

And now, in the middle of a wedding that had collapsed, she finally had someone willing to listen.

Daniel gently squeezed her hand.

“Sophie, there is something I need you to know.”

The little girl looked up at him.

“I’m not angry with you.”

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“Even though everything changed?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Especially because everything changed.”

Sophie studied his face, trying to understand.

Children often believed adults had simple answers.

They believed love disappeared when people became disappointed.

But Daniel wanted her to know that was not always true.

“Sometimes adults make mistakes,” he continued.

“But those mistakes are never the child’s fault.”

Sophie looked toward Emily.

Emily covered her mouth as she cried.

Those words were exactly what she had needed to hear years earlier.

But she had been too afraid to ask anyone.

Daniel stood up and faced Emily.

The pain between them was still there.

It had not vanished because he had spoken kindly to Sophie.

Trust did not return in a single moment.

A broken promise could not be repaired with a single conversation.

But for the first time that night, Daniel was no longer only seeing the betrayal.

He was seeing the entire story.

“I need to understand something,” he said.

Emily nodded.

“Anything.”

“Why did you let me believe you had no children?”

Emily looked down.

The question had haunted her for years.

“Because every time I tried to tell you, I imagined losing you.”

Daniel frowned slightly.

“You imagined it.”

Emily nodded.

“But I never knew if it would actually happen.”

Her voice became softer.

“I convinced myself that protecting what we had was better than risking everything.”

Daniel looked away.

“And you never thought I deserved the choice?”

Emily closed her eyes.

The answer hurt.

“No.”

A tear slipped down her face.

“I was selfish.”

Daniel did not respond immediately.

The honesty surprised him.

He had expected another explanation.

Another reason.

Another attempt to make the pain smaller.

Instead, she admitted what she had done.

Margaret watched quietly.

She had known this moment would come.

The truth was not only about what happened in the past.

It was about whether people could accept responsibility in the present.

Daniel walked slowly across the ballroom.

The empty space around him reminded him of how quickly a perfect day could change.

The chairs were still decorated.

May you like

The flowers were still arranged.

The wedding cake remained untouched.
