Chương 2

Emily lowered her eyes.
She looked at the floor covered with flower petals.
Only hours earlier, she had walked down that aisle believing everything would go exactly as planned.
She believed she could keep the past hidden.
She believed nobody would discover what she had done.
But now every secret was standing in front of her.
The older woman stopped beside Daniel.
“There are things you need to know before you make any decision.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What things?”
The woman glanced at Emily.
“Things she should have told you herself.”
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
The ballroom remained silent as everyone waited for the truth that would change everything.
The older woman’s words hung in the air like a warning nobody wanted to hear.
Daniel stared at her, trying to understand why she seemed so certain.
The entire ballroom waited for an explanation.
Even the guests who had come only to celebrate a marriage now felt like witnesses to something much bigger.
Emily remained silent.
Her hands gripped the sides of her wedding gown tightly, her fingers trembling against the delicate fabric.
She wanted to speak.
She wanted to stop the moment before it went any further.
But every time she looked at Daniel, she saw the hurt in his eyes.
And she knew she could not erase what had already happened.
The older woman turned slightly toward Sophie.
The little girl looked down, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
“She has been carrying this burden for too long,” the woman said softly.
Daniel looked at Sophie with concern.
“Carrying what burden?”
The child’s lower lip trembled.
She looked like she wanted to disappear from the room.
Emily took a small step forward.
“Sophie, you don’t have to say anything.”
The little girl looked up immediately.
For the first time since the confrontation began, there was anger in Emily’s voice.
Not anger toward Daniel.
Anger toward the truth coming closer.
Daniel noticed.
“Why are you telling her not to speak?”
Emily froze.
She had no answer.
The older woman watched her carefully.
“Because she knows that once Sophie speaks, there will be no way back.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
The older woman took a slow breath.
“My name is Margaret Hayes.”
She paused.
“And I was there the night everything changed.”
Daniel looked confused.
“I have never met you before.”
“No,” Margaret replied.
“But you have heard my name.”
Daniel searched his memory.
Then his face changed slightly.
He remembered.
Emily noticed the change.
“You know her?”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“I know the name.”
The room remained silent.
Margaret continued.
“Years ago, before you met Emily, there was another life she tried to leave behind.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Please stop.”
Her voice was almost a whisper.
Margaret did not move.
“Everyone deserves the truth.”
Those words struck Daniel deeply because they were the same words he had said moments earlier.
He looked at Emily again.
“Another life?”
Emily swallowed hard.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“What did she mean?”
Emily finally looked at him.
There was fear in her eyes.
But beneath that fear was something else.
Regret.
“I was going to tell you.”
Daniel gave a small, painful laugh.
“When?”
Emily had no answer.
The question cut deeper than anger.
Because she knew she had delayed the truth for too long.
Sophie quietly stepped closer to Margaret.
The older woman placed a comforting hand on the child’s shoulder.
Daniel noticed the gesture.
He noticed how safe Sophie seemed with Margaret.
And he realized there were pieces of this story that everyone knew except him.
“What happened that night?” Daniel asked.
Margaret looked toward the wedding guests.
Many of them were still standing near the aisle.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked shocked.
But nobody left.
They all wanted the answer.
Margaret looked back at Daniel.
“Before you met Emily, she was connected to a family that lost everything.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Margaret, please.”
“You made promises,” Margaret said quietly.
“And then you disappeared.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Is this true?”
Emily’s breathing became heavier.
She looked at Sophie.
Then at Margaret.
Then finally at Daniel.
“I was scared.”
Daniel’s face softened for a moment.
But the confusion remained.
“Scared of what?”
Emily looked down.
“Of losing you.”
The answer surprised him.
“Losing me because of what?”
A long silence followed.
Then Emily whispered.
“Because I knew you would see me differently.”
Daniel stared at her.
He had expected anger.
He had expected excuses.
He had not expected fear.
Margaret stepped closer.
“The night before Emily met you, she made a choice that affected many people.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What choice?”
Margaret’s expression became heavy.
“She chose to protect herself instead of telling the truth.”
Emily closed her eyes.
The tears finally fell.
“I thought I could fix it.”
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
The wedding decorations.
The flowers.
The guests.
Everything that was supposed to represent a new beginning now felt like a stage where the truth had arrived too late.
“What did you hide from me?”
Emily looked at him.
Her voice shook.
“I had a daughter.”
The words froze everyone.
Daniel stopped breathing for a second.
His eyes slowly moved toward Sophie.
The little girl stood beside Margaret, tears running down her face.
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then back at Sophie.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
Emily covered her mouth as she cried.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“You knew?”
Emily nodded.
“I knew from the beginning.”
The pain on Daniel’s face was impossible to hide.
“You knew Sophie was your daughter?”
The question was directed at Emily.
She nodded again.
Daniel looked at the child.
A thousand emotions crossed his face at once.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
Sadness.
And something that looked like heartbreak.
Sophie watched him carefully.

She did not know what would happen next.
She only knew that the secret she had protected for years was finally out.
