Chương 2

Daniel looked away for a moment.

Emily watched them.

Even though she was young, she could feel there was something bigger happening.

Something hidden.

Something nobody wanted to say.

Rachel wiped water from her hands.

Her voice became quieter.

“You think I wanted this?”

Daniel stared at her.

“Wanted what?”

Rachel looked at Emily.

The sadness in her face became impossible to hide.

“This whole family falling apart.”

Emily’s breathing slowed.

She heard those words.

Falling apart.

She had heard adults say them before.

Usually on television.

Usually about strangers.

Not about her family.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Rachel.”

But she shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“No more pretending.”

Emily looked up.

“Pretending about what?”

Rachel looked at her daughter.

For the first time that morning, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Afraid.

And Emily realized the water was not the thing frightening her mother.

It was whatever truth was coming next.

Rachel looked at her daughter.

For the first time that morning, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Afraid.

And Emily realized the water was not the thing frightening her mother.

It was whatever truth was coming next.

Rachel slowly lowered herself onto the edge of the wooden chair beside Emily.

The wet fabric of Emily’s shirt clung uncomfortably to her skin, but she barely noticed anymore.

Her attention was fixed on her mother’s face.

“Mom,” Emily whispered.

Rachel swallowed hard.

“I need to tell you something.”

Daniel’s expression changed immediately.

“Rachel.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet but firm.

“No more protecting everyone except the person who needs the truth.”

Emily looked between them.

“Is someone hurt?”

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

The question was innocent, but it carried the weight of everything they had been avoiding.

“No, sweetheart,” Rachel said softly.

“Not like that.”

“Then what is it?”

Rachel reached toward Emily’s hand but stopped before touching her.

The hesitation said more than words could.

“I made a mistake.”

Emily looked confused.

“What kind of mistake?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Rachel, maybe we should talk about this later.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Later is how we got here.”

The backyard fell silent again.

The sunlight still warmed the grass.

The birds still moved through the trees.

The world outside their family continued as if nothing had happened.

But inside that small space, everything felt different.

Emily pulled her knees closer to herself.

She looked smaller than she had a few minutes earlier.

“I don’t like when you two talk like this.”

Rachel immediately looked at her.

“I know.”

“Are you and Dad getting divorced?”

The question hit both adults at the same time.

Daniel looked down.

Rachel closed her eyes briefly.

“No,” she said.

“But I understand why you would think that.”

Emily’s eyes moved between them.

“Then why does everyone look so sad?”

Neither of them answered right away.

Because the truth was complicated.

Because sometimes families broke long before anyone said the words.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your mom and I have been dealing with something.”

Emily waited.

“What?”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

He nodded slightly.

A silent agreement passed between them.

They both knew they could not keep hiding behind silence.

“Someone found out something about our family,” Rachel said.

Emily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel looked toward the fence.

“It means there are things I should have told you sooner.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Rachel.”

“I know.”

She turned back to him.

“But she deserves to know why everything feels different.”

Emily noticed the way they looked at each other.

There was sadness there.

Not just anger.

A sadness that made her chest feel heavy.

“What did you find out?”

Rachel looked at her daughter.

“I found out something about your dad.”

Daniel’s eyes lowered.

Emily looked at him.

“Dad?”

He did not respond immediately.

That silence scared her more than anything.

“Did Dad do something bad?”

Daniel finally looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was gentle.

“I didn’t hurt anyone.”

Rachel looked away.

“But you kept something from me.”

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Yes.”

Emily’s fingers tightened around the edge of her shirt.

“What?”

Daniel looked like he wanted to answer.

But the words seemed difficult.

“I should have told your mother the truth a long time ago.”

Rachel’s face showed pain.

“You should have.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What truth?”

He stepped closer but kept his distance.

“I had a daughter before you were born.”

The words seemed to stop time.

Emily blinked.

She was waiting for someone to explain.

A joke.

A correction.

Something.

“You have another daughter?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Rachel watched Emily carefully.

“She is your half-sister.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why didn’t I know?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“That you would see me differently.”

Emily looked hurt.

“I don’t understand.”

Daniel sat down on the other side of the table.

His expression changed from defensive to broken.

“When I was younger, before I met your mom, I made choices that affected someone else’s life.”

Rachel crossed her arms.

“And when he had the chance to tell me, he didn’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I was trying to fix it.”

“You were hiding it.”

“I was scared.”

“Everyone is scared,” Rachel replied.

“But hiding the truth does not make the consequences disappear.”

Emily listened quietly.

The argument sounded different now.

It was not just about the water.

It was about years.

Years of secrets.

Years of pain.

“Does she know about me?”

Daniel hesitated.

Rachel noticed.

Emily noticed too.

That hesitation created a new fear.

“Does she?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“Yes.”

Emily’s eyes widened.

“How?”

Daniel rubbed his hands together nervously.

“She found me.”

“When?”

“A few months ago.”

Emily looked at Rachel.

“And you knew?”

Rachel’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Both of you knew?”

Neither answered quickly enough.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m the only one who didn’t know.”

Rachel immediately moved closer.

“No, Emily.”

May you like

But Emily stepped back.

“I’m always the last person to know things.”
