Chương 3

The hours after Maya left the bedroom felt longer than any day Daniel could remember.
He remained sitting in the quiet room, staring at the empty space where his family had stood only moments before.
The sunlight had shifted across the floor, but he had barely noticed the passing time.
Every corner of the room carried a memory.
The chair near the window where Maya used to read before bed.
The dresser where Lily placed drawings and little handmade gifts.
The bed where they had shared conversations about their future.
Now every familiar thing felt different.
Daniel finally stood and walked toward the dark device resting on the bed.
He looked at it but did not touch it immediately.
For months, that device had represented everything he was trying to hide.
Now it represented everything he had lost.
He picked it up slowly and turned it over in his hand.
The weight felt heavier than it should have.
He remembered the first message.
The first excuse.
The first time he told himself it was harmless.
He had spent months creating small lies until the lies became a life of their own.
And now he understood that betrayal was not only about the moment someone crossed a line.
It was also about every choice afterward to continue.
Daniel placed the device back down.
He walked out of the bedroom and into the hallway.
The house was unusually quiet.
Normally, he would hear Lily laughing somewhere downstairs or Maya moving around while preparing something for their family.
Those sounds had always felt ordinary.
He never realized how valuable they were until they disappeared.
When he reached the living room, he saw Maya sitting on the sofa with Lily beside her.
The television was on, but neither of them was watching.
Maya was holding Lily's hand while their daughter leaned against her shoulder.
Daniel stopped at the entrance.
For a moment, he considered turning around.
He wondered if giving them space meant leaving completely.
But he knew running away had already caused enough damage.
Maya looked up and saw him.
Her expression did not change.
She was not angry.
She was not welcoming.
She was simply guarded.
"I need to talk to you," Daniel said.
Lily immediately looked between them.
Maya noticed and gently touched her daughter's shoulder.
"Can you go upstairs for a little while, sweetheart?"
Lily hesitated.
"Are you going to fight again?"
The question made both adults pause.
Daniel looked away.
Maya took a careful breath.
"No."
"We're going to talk."
Lily studied her mother's face.
She wanted to believe her.
After a moment, she nodded and slowly walked toward the stairs.
Daniel watched her disappear.
The guilt on his face deepened.
"She shouldn't have to worry about us," he said.
Maya looked at him.
"She worries because she feels everything we try to hide."
Daniel accepted the truth.
He sat in the chair across from the sofa, leaving a careful distance between them.
"I want to tell you everything."
Maya looked toward the window.
"You should have wanted that before."
"I know."
"Stop saying that."
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
"Stop saying you know."
Her voice remained calm.
"Because if you truly knew, we wouldn't be sitting here."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
She was right.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
"Good."
"I don't expect you to trust me."
"Good."
"I just want you to hear the truth."
Maya looked back at him.
"Then tell me something I don't already know."
Daniel took a deep breath.
"The reason I started talking to Rachel was because I was unhappy."
Maya's expression hardened.
"Be careful."
Daniel stopped.
He understood immediately.
He was not going to blame her.
He was not going to make his choices her responsibility.
"I was unhappy with myself," he corrected.
"I felt like I was failing at everything."
Maya listened silently.
"I was overwhelmed at work."
"I felt like I was losing control."
"And instead of dealing with those feelings, I found someone who made me feel like I was someone else."
Maya's eyes became colder.
"So you escaped."
"Yes."
"While I was here."
"Yes."
"While Lily was here."
Daniel looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt, but it was different from before.
Before, every truth had been dragged out of him.
Now he was finally offering them without being forced.
Maya noticed the difference.
But she also knew that honesty after betrayal did not erase betrayal.
"You made a choice," she said.
Daniel nodded.
"I did."
"And I have to live with what that choice did to me."
"I know."
Maya closed her eyes briefly.
"Daniel."
"I'm sorry."
The apology came quietly.
Not dramatic.
Not desperate.
Just broken.
Maya looked at him.
For the first time that day, she saw how much shame he was carrying.
But seeing his pain did not remove hers.
"I spent eight months wondering if I was imagining things," she said.
"I thought maybe I was being paranoid."
"I thought maybe I was becoming the kind of person who didn't trust the person she loved."
Her voice trembled slightly.
"Do you understand what that does to someone?"
Daniel shook his head slowly.
"No."
"I don't think anyone understands until it happens."
The room became quiet.
Maya looked toward the staircase where Lily had gone.
"I don't want her to grow up thinking this is normal."
"It isn't."
"Then prove it."
Daniel looked at her.
"How?"
"By accepting that you cannot decide what happens next."
The words surprised him.
Maya continued.
"You don't get to hurt me and then choose how quickly I heal."
"You don't get to decide when I should forgive you."
"You don't get to ask me to make you feel better."
Daniel nodded.
"I understand."
This time, Maya did not correct him.
Because this time, he was not defending himself.
She looked at him carefully.
"Don't say whatever."
"Why?"
"Because people say whatever when they want the pain to stop."
Daniel remained silent.
May you like
"Say what you actually mean."
He thought for a moment.
