Chương 7

"They're fine."
Daniel exhaled.
"What's wrong?"
Emily looked at the old letter.
Then at the photograph.
"Someone called me."
Daniel became quiet.
"Who?"
"Michael."
The silence on the phone was immediate.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Emily noticed.
"You know that name."
Daniel's voice became serious.
"Where are you?"
"Answer me."
"Emily, where are you?"
She stood still.
Because she heard something she had not expected.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Daniel."
His breathing changed.
"You cannot be alone right now."
Her heart tightened.
"Why?"
Another silence.
Then Daniel finally said,
"Because Michael is the reason I disappeared."
Emily felt the world stop.
"What?"
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"And if he's calling you now, it means he knows I found you."
She gripped the phone.
"Daniel, tell me everything."
"Now."
His voice broke slightly.
"I need you to leave the house."
Emily looked toward the hallway.
Her children were asleep upstairs.
"No."
"Emily."
"No."
Her voice became firm.
"I'm not running again."
Daniel went silent.
And she continued.
"Not with my children."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel answered.
"You're right."
The words surprised her.
"Pack what you need."
She frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I'm coming to you."
Emily looked at the clock.
"Daniel."
His voice was calm but urgent.
"This time, I won't disappear."
Emily did not move for several seconds after the call ended.
The phone remained pressed against her ear even though Daniel was no longer there.
His final words echoed louder than anything else.
This time, I won't disappear.
She wanted to believe him.
That was the part that scared her most.
Because believing him meant admitting that the part of her heart she had buried years ago was not completely gone.
Emily walked upstairs quietly.
The house was dark except for the soft glow from the hallway nightlight.
She opened the door to the children's room.
Her son was asleep with one arm resting above his head.
Her daughter was curled around her teddy bear, peaceful and unaware of the storm surrounding them.
Emily stood there watching them.
For years, they had been her reason to keep going.
Every decision she made was about protecting them.
Every sacrifice was for them.
Now the past had returned, and it was threatening to reach the one place she had always kept safe.
She gently woke them.
"Sweetheart."
Her son opened his eyes.
"Mom?"
"We need to get ready."
He looked confused.
"Are we leaving?"
Emily forced a calm expression.
"Just for a little while."
Her daughter sat up, rubbing her eyes.
"Is Daddy coming?"
The question stopped Emily.
She looked at her daughter.
Children saw things adults tried to hide.
"Yes," Emily whispered.
The little girl smiled slightly.
"Good."
Emily felt a painful emotion rise inside her.
Hope.
Something she had tried not to feel.
She helped them get dressed and packed a small bag with only the essentials.
She moved carefully, listening to every sound outside.
Every passing car.
Every movement near the house.
She hated feeling afraid.
She hated that Michael's call had brought back a feeling she thought she had escaped.
When she finished packing, there was a knock at the door.
Emily froze.
She immediately moved in front of the children.
Her hand reached for the object on the kitchen counter she could use for protection.
Then she heard his voice.
"Emily."
Daniel.
She looked through the window beside the door.
He stood outside.
Alone.
No confidence.
No control.
Just urgency and concern.
She opened the door but kept the chain locked.
Daniel looked at her.
Then his eyes moved toward the children behind her.
Relief crossed his face.
"They're okay."
Emily noticed again.
That was always his first concern.
"You came quickly."
"I was already on my way."
She frowned.
"You knew something was wrong?"
"I knew Michael wouldn't contact you unless he wanted something."
Emily unlocked the door but did not step aside immediately.
"Then start talking."
Daniel nodded.
Inside the house, the children sat quietly on the couch.
Daniel remained standing near the door.
He did not act like he belonged there.
Emily noticed.
"You can sit."
He looked surprised.
It was a small thing.
But after years apart, even a small permission mattered.
He sat across from them.
The little girl watched him carefully.
The boy watched even more carefully.
Daniel looked at both of them.
"I know this is confusing."
The boy nodded.
"Very."
Daniel almost smiled.
"I understand."
The boy looked at him.
"Are you scared?"
Daniel was surprised by the question.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel glanced at Emily.
"Because I don't want to make another mistake."
The boy thought about that.
Then he nodded.
Emily looked away.
She did not expect Daniel to be honest with them.
Not so quickly.
"Tell me about Michael," Emily said.
Daniel's expression changed immediately.
The warmth disappeared.
What remained was the person who had survived something painful.
"Michael was someone I trusted."
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"He worked with me."
"Business?"
"Yes."
Emily crossed her arms.
"And he betrayed you?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not exactly."
The answer confused her.
"Then what?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Michael was involved in something bigger than either of us understood."
He paused.
"When I discovered it, I tried to expose it."
"And that's why you left?"
"Partly."
Emily waited.
Daniel continued.
"Michael knew I would go after the truth."
"So he threatened you."
"Yes."
"And you believed leaving was the only option."
Daniel nodded.
"I did."
Emily looked at him.
"You keep saying that like you know it was wrong."
"I do."
"Then why?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because I was thinking like someone trying to survive."
His voice became softer.
"Not like someone who loved you."
The honesty hurt.
Emily looked down.
The room became silent.
Then the boy asked,
"Did he hurt you?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Michael?"
The boy nodded.
Daniel hesitated.
"He hurt a lot of people."
The child looked worried.
May you like
"Is he going to hurt us?"
Emily immediately reached for him.
