Chương 5

The boy picked up his small backpack and looked at Daniel.

"Do you live somewhere else?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Do you have a family?"

The question made Daniel pause.

He looked at Emily.

"No."

The boy seemed confused.

"Why?"

Daniel looked down for a moment.

"Because I spent a long time trying to fix something I broke."

Emily heard the words.

She wished they did not affect her.

But they did.

They walked through the airport terminal together.

Not as a family.

Not yet.

More like four people connected by a secret none of them fully understood.

The bright airport lights felt different from the quiet airplane cabin.

There was no privacy anymore.

No small space where emotions could stay hidden.

Reality had returned.

Emily held the children's hands as they moved through the crowd.

Daniel walked a few steps behind them.

That distance bothered her.

She did not know why.

Part of her wanted him away.

Another part noticed he was trying to respect the space she demanded.

Outside baggage claim, Emily stopped.

The children looked at her.

Daniel stopped too.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Emily said,

"You need to tell me everything."

Daniel nodded.

"Not pieces."

"I won't."

"No more protecting me by keeping secrets."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"No more."

She studied his face.

"Because if I find out you lied to me again, you will never see them."

The pain in his eyes was immediate.

But he nodded.

"I understand."

The children watched silently.

Emily realized they were hearing a conversation between adults, but they could feel the importance of every word.

She softened slightly.

"We are going home."

Daniel looked down.

"I know."

"You are not coming inside."

"I know."

She almost became angry again.

"Stop saying that."

Daniel looked surprised.

Emily sighed.

"You always say it like you deserve the punishment."

He was quiet.

"Maybe I do."

The answer stopped her.

Because she expected him to fight.

She expected him to convince her.

Instead, he accepted every painful truth she gave him.

And somehow that made everything harder.

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small card.

He extended it toward her.

Emily hesitated before taking it.

"My number."

She looked at the card.

"I don't know if I will call."

"I know."

She looked up sharply.

Again.

But this time, she saw something different.

Not surrender.

Patience.

"You're really different," she whispered.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I had a lot of time to realize who I was."

The words stayed with her.

Before leaving, the little girl suddenly stepped toward him.

Emily immediately noticed.

The child looked up at Daniel.

"Can I hug you?"

Daniel froze.

His eyes moved toward Emily.

He was asking without words.

Emily did not answer.

But she also did not stop her.

The girl slowly wrapped her arms around him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His hands hovered uncertainly in the air.

He looked terrified of doing the wrong thing.

Then, carefully, he hugged her back.

It lasted only a few seconds.

But for Daniel, it was probably the first moment in years where he felt like he belonged somewhere.

The boy watched.

He did not move closer.

Not yet.

Daniel understood.

He let go of the girl and stepped back.

"Thank you."

The little girl smiled.

"You're welcome."

Emily looked away.

She did not want to admit how much that moment affected her.

They walked toward the parking area.

The city air was cold.

The holiday decorations outside the airport shined brightly.

Families reunited around them.

People laughed.

People hugged.

Emily felt strangely disconnected.

Because she was standing beside the man she once loved while trying to decide if he was a stranger or someone she had lost.

At the car, Daniel stopped.

"This is where I leave."

The children looked at him.

The girl frowned.

"But you just got here."

The sentence hurt him.

Emily noticed.

Daniel crouched slightly so he was closer to their level.

"I know."

"Will we see you again?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

The answer depended on her.

"I hope so."

The boy looked at his mother.

Emily saw the question in his eyes.

She did not have an answer yet.

Not a complete one.

Daniel stood.

Then he turned to leave.

Emily watched him walk away.

The same man who had entered the airplane with a secret was now leaving without demanding anything.

No arguments.

No pressure.

No attempt to force his way back into their lives.

Just hope.

And somehow, that was more painful.

The children got into the car.

Emily remained standing for a moment.

She looked at the card in her hand.

Then at Daniel's disappearing figure.

A memory returned.

Not the night he left.

Something earlier.

A promise he had made when they were young.

He had told her once that no matter what happened, he would always find his way back to her.

She had believed him.

Then she spent years convincing herself that he had broken that promise.

But now she wondered.

Maybe he had been trying to keep it all along.

The drive home was quiet.

The children asked small questions.

Emily answered only what she could.

When they arrived, the house felt exactly the same.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same photographs.

But Emily was not the same person who had left that morning.

She placed the old photograph on the kitchen counter.

The children watched.

"Mom?"

She looked at them.

"Yes?"

"Is he really our dad?"

Emily sat down slowly.

She knew she could not hide forever.

"Yes."

The boy looked at the photograph again.

"Why didn't he come before?"

Emily looked toward the window.

Because that was the question she had asked herself for years.

"I don't know."

The answer surprised them.

And it surprised her too.

May you like

Because for the first time, she admitted that she did not know the whole story.

That night, after the children fell asleep, Emily sat alone at the kitchen table.
