Chương 2

"I should have found you sooner."
Emily held the photograph tightly.
"Why didn't you?"
He looked toward the airplane window where the clouds passed beneath them.
"Because I thought protecting you meant staying away."
She almost laughed, but there was no happiness in it.
"That makes no sense."
"No," he admitted.
"It doesn't."
For the first time, Emily saw something different in him.
Not confidence.
Not power.
Regret.
"I made choices that hurt people," he said.
"But I spent every day trying to fix what I broke."
Emily stared at him.
The man who had just walked into her life again was not the monster she had imagined.
That almost made it harder.
Anger was easier than forgiveness.
The little girl quietly reached toward her mother.
Emily looked down and forced a gentle smile.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
The girl looked at the man.
"Is he someone we know?"
Emily opened her mouth.
No words came out.
The man looked away.
The question hurt more than the slap.
Because the answer was complicated.
And because the truth would change everything.
The airplane continued through the night sky while the world below disappeared into darkness.
Inside that cabin, a family secret that had been buried for years was finally beginning to come back to the surface.
And Emily knew that before this flight ended, she would have to decide whether the man in front of her was the person who destroyed her life or the person who had finally returned to save it.
The silence between them lasted longer than Emily expected.
The sound of the airplane engines filled the space where words should have been.
She looked down at the photograph again, tracing the faded edges with her thumb.
There were questions she had buried for years, questions she had convinced herself no longer mattered.
But seeing him there, sitting only a few feet away, made every unanswered question rise again.
The man she once loved had returned after disappearing without a goodbye.
And now he was sitting beside the children he never knew.
The boy looked at his mother carefully.
"Mom, why does he know us?"
Emily forced herself to breathe.
She glanced at the man before answering.
"Because sometimes people from the past come back when they should have stayed there."
The man lowered his eyes.
The words hurt, but he accepted them.
The girl hugged her teddy bear and leaned against Emily's arm.
"Is he bad?"
Emily felt her heart break at the question.
She wanted to say yes.
It would have been easier.
It would have protected the children from a complicated truth.
But she looked at his face and saw something she had not expected.
Pain.
Not the cold confidence of someone trying to control her.
Not the anger of someone who felt entitled to forgiveness.
Only regret.
"I don't know," Emily whispered.
The man looked at her.
That answer seemed more painful than anger.
Because he knew she was telling the truth.
A flight attendant slowly approached them, keeping her voice low.
"Is everything alright here?"
Emily looked toward the woman.
For a second, she considered asking for help.
She considered telling her that this stranger had entered their space and disturbed everything she had built.
But then she looked at the photograph in her hand.
"No," Emily finally said.
"We're okay."
The flight attendant nodded uncertainly and walked away.
The man watched her disappear down the aisle.
"You protected me."
Emily immediately looked at him.
"Don't misunderstand."
Her voice became firm.
"I protected my children from being involved in something they don't understand."
He nodded.
"I know."
"You always say that."
Emily tightened her grip on the photograph.
"You know everything, don't you?"
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"I know what I did."
"That's not the same thing."
The man accepted the criticism.
He leaned back in his seat, staring at the floor.
"My name is Daniel."
Emily looked away.
"I know your name."
The words surprised him.
His eyes lifted.
"You remember?"
"I remembered everything."
Her voice became softer.
"I just wished I didn't."
Daniel swallowed.
The cabin lights reflected in his eyes.
"I thought about that night every single day."
Emily felt a familiar pain return.
The night he disappeared.
The night when everything she believed about their future collapsed.
She remembered waiting.
She remembered calling.
She remembered the silence.
And she remembered finally realizing that the person she trusted most had chosen to leave.
"You don't get to talk about that like it was something that happened to you," she said.
"It happened to me too."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"You're right."
That simple acceptance made her angry.
She almost wanted him to argue.
She wanted him to defend himself so she could prove he was still the same person.
But he didn't.
"I lost everything that night," Emily continued.
"I lost my home, my trust, my future."
Her voice trembled.
"And then I found out I was pregnant."
Daniel froze.
Emily noticed the change in his expression.
"You didn't know."
"No," he whispered.
She looked at him.
"You really didn't know."
Daniel shook his head slowly.
The pain on his face was immediate.
Not fake.
Not controlled.
A father learning about a child he never knew existed.
"How old are they?"
Emily hesitated.
The children looked between them.
She knew this moment was changing everything.
"The boy is eight."
Daniel looked toward him.
"And the girl?"
"Six."
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
Eight years.
Six years.
Years he could never get back.
"I missed their first steps."
His voice cracked.
"I missed their first words."
Emily looked away because hearing his pain made her feel something she did not want to feel.
"You missed everything because you left."
Daniel opened his eyes.
"I know."
She hated those words.
Because they gave her nothing to fight against.
The boy slowly leaned forward.
"Are you my dad?"
The question landed harder than the slap.
May you like
Emily immediately looked at her son.
"Sweetheart."
