Chương 1

""The first thing Emily Carter saw when the man stepped into the aisle was the way every passenger around him went silent.

He stood beneath the warm golden lights of the Christmas decorations hanging above the luxury airplane cabin, looking like someone who had carried years of pain into that single moment.

His dark slightly messy hair fell across his forehead, and his sharp features remained tense as his eyes locked onto the woman sitting by the window.

Emily immediately pulled her two children closer.

Her heart raced before she even understood why.

The man was a stranger to her, but the sadness in his eyes felt strangely familiar.

The little girl beside her tightened her grip around her gray teddy bear, hiding part of her face behind it.

Her brother stared at the man with confused eyes, trying to understand why an adult he had never met looked at them as if they were the most important people in the world.

Emily placed one protective hand in front of her children.

"Please stay away from us," she whispered.

The man stopped a few steps away.

For a moment, he looked less like a threat and more like someone who had finally found something he thought he had lost forever.

"I only need a minute," he said quietly.

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled, but she forced herself to remain strong.

"Whatever you want, you are not coming near my children."

The man's expression changed.

Pain crossed his face for a brief second before he tried to hide it.

"I understand why you hate me."

Emily froze.

Those words were not what she expected.

She looked at him carefully, searching his face for any memory she had buried.

But nothing came.

Only fear and anger remained.

"You don't know anything about me," she said.

The man slowly took another step forward.

The movement was small, but to Emily it felt dangerous.

She reacted instantly.

She stood halfway from her seat and raised her hand.

The cabin seemed to hold its breath.

Then her palm struck his cheek.

The sound echoed through the quiet airplane aisle.

The man's head turned slightly from the impact, and he stepped back in shock.

A red mark slowly appeared on his cheek.

Nobody spoke.

Emily herself looked stunned by what she had done.

Her hand remained frozen in the air for a moment before she lowered it.

She had expected anger.

She had expected him to fight back.

Instead, he simply touched his cheek and looked at her with wounded eyes.

The children stared between them.

The little girl hugged her teddy bear tighter.

The boy whispered, "Mom?"

Emily immediately pulled them close.

"I’m okay," she said, though her voice revealed that she was not.

The man took a slow breath.

His jaw tightened as he looked away for a moment.

Then he looked back at her.

"You still protect them the same way."

Emily's expression hardened.

"What did you say?"

He swallowed.

"I knew you would do anything for them."

The words made her uncomfortable.

She looked around the cabin.

Several passengers were pretending not to watch.

The flight attendants stood at a distance, unsure whether to intervene.

Emily lowered her voice.

"Who are you?"

The man did not answer immediately.

He looked at the children again.

The little boy had curly brown hair and the same curious expression he remembered from years ago, even though he had never been allowed to see him grow up.

The little girl with the white bow looked at him with innocent confusion.

The man’s eyes filled with emotion.

"I came here because I needed to tell you the truth."

Emily felt a cold feeling in her chest.

"What truth?"

He reached into his coat slowly.

Emily immediately tensed.

But he did not pull out anything dangerous.

He held a small worn photograph in his hand.

The picture was old.

The edges were damaged from years of being carried around.

He extended it toward her.

Emily hesitated before taking it.

The moment she saw the image, her entire body became still.

It was a photograph of her.

Not the woman she was now.

The younger version of herself from many years earlier.

Standing beside the man.

Both of them were smiling.

Her fingers began to shake.

"No," she whispered.

The man watched her reaction carefully.

"You remember."

Emily looked up at him.

Her eyes were filled with confusion.

"Where did you get this?"

His voice became softer.

"Because I was there."

The airplane suddenly felt smaller.

The Christmas lights above them continued glowing, but the warmth of the cabin disappeared.

Emily looked at the man’s face again.

The anger she felt was now mixed with fear.

"You can't be..."

She stopped herself.

The man looked down.

"I searched for you for years."

Her breathing became uneven.

The children watched their mother closely, sensing that something had changed.

Emily had spent years building a new life.

A life where the past could not reach her.

A life where she could protect her children from every painful memory.

But now the past was standing in front of her.

And it knew their names.

"You left," Emily said quietly.

The man's eyes lowered.

"I know."

"You disappeared."

"I know."

"You let me believe you were gone forever."

His face tightened.

"I know."

Emily felt tears forming, but she refused to let them fall.

"Then why are you here now?"

The man looked at the children.

"Because I found out I was wrong."

Emily followed his gaze.

Her anger returned immediately.

"Do not look at them like that."

He looked back at her.

"I never stopped looking for you."

The sentence hung between them.

The children did not understand the meaning.

But Emily did.

She remembered a different time.

A time before fear.

May you like

A time before she learned how easily someone could break a promise.

The man slowly sat down in the empty seat across the aisle, giving her space.
