Chương 4

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

"Yes."

The answer was almost too quiet.

The plane continued moving through the night sky.

Outside the window, the clouds stretched endlessly beneath them.

Inside the cabin, a family was trying to rebuild a truth that had been broken for years.

The boy looked between them.

"Did you really leave because of us?"

Emily immediately turned toward him.

"No, sweetheart."

Daniel looked at the child.

"Never."

The boy studied his face.

"Then why?"

Daniel took a slow breath.

"Because I thought leaving was the only way to keep your mother safe."

The boy looked at Emily.

"Was she in danger?"

Emily did not answer.

She didn't know how to explain a past that was suddenly becoming complicated.

Daniel noticed her hesitation.

"I should have trusted her."

Emily looked at him.

That sentence mattered.

Because for years, the thing that hurt the most was not only that he left.

It was that he decided she could not handle the truth.

"You should have."

"I know."

She looked down.

"I waited for you."

Daniel's face changed.

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became softer but more painful.

"You don't know."

Daniel stayed silent.

"I waited every night for months."

She looked at the children.

"I told myself you would come back."

Her fingers tightened around the old letter.

"I defended you when everyone told me I was foolish."

Daniel looked away.

"And then one day I stopped."

The words were heavier than anger.

They were acceptance.

"I had to."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I understand."

Emily looked at him.

"Do you?"

He met her eyes.

"Yes."

She studied him.

"Because you lost me?"

"Because I lost the right to ask you to wait."

The answer surprised her.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then the boy quietly asked,

"Can I see the picture?"

Emily looked down.

She had forgotten he was watching.

She handed him the photograph.

The boy studied the younger versions of his parents.

"You look happy."

Emily looked at the picture.

She remembered that day.

They had been standing outside a small restaurant after their first anniversary dinner.

Daniel had laughed because she spilled a drink on herself.

She had been embarrassed.

He had told her it was the reason he loved her.

Before everything changed.

"Yeah," she whispered.

"We were."

The boy looked at Daniel.

"Do you remember?"

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Every second."

The little girl looked at him.

"Why did you look for us?"

Daniel turned toward her.

The question was simple.

But the answer carried years of pain.

"Because I never forgot you."

The girl looked confused.

"But you didn't know us."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"That's true."

He looked at Emily.

"But I knew you."

Emily felt the emotion in his voice.

She looked away.

She didn't want the children to see her break.

A soft announcement came through the airplane speakers, informing passengers they would begin descending soon.

The flight that had seemed endless was suddenly almost over.

Emily felt a strange fear.

Not fear of Daniel.

Fear of what happened next.

Because when they landed, reality would return.

The children would ask more questions.

The past would follow them home.

And she would have to decide whether Daniel belonged in their future.

Daniel noticed her expression.

"You don't have to forgive me."

Emily looked at him.

"I know."

"You don't have to let me be part of their lives."

She said nothing.

"But I need you to know something."

"What?"

Daniel looked at the children.

"I never stopped being their father."

Emily's eyes hardened slightly.

"Being a father is more than loving someone from a distance."

"I know."

"You missed birthdays."

"I know."

"You missed school plays."

"I know."

"You missed every moment that mattered."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

His voice became quieter.

"And I would spend the rest of my life trying to earn back even one of those moments if you let me."

Emily looked at him.

For years, she had imagined this meeting.

She imagined screaming.

She imagined walking away.

She imagined finally getting revenge for all the pain.

She never imagined feeling uncertain.

The plane began its descent.

The children moved closer to the window, distracted by the view below.

Daniel watched them quietly.

Emily watched him.

And for the first time, she saw not the man who abandoned her.

She saw a man who had been carrying the weight of that decision every day since.

But forgiveness was not something that could happen in one flight.

Some wounds were deeper than apologies.

Some secrets changed everything.

And as the airplane prepared to land, Emily knew the real conversation had not even begun yet.

The airplane touched down smoothly, but Emily felt nothing about the moment was simple.

The wheels met the runway, passengers began gathering their belongings, and the warm Christmas lights inside the cabin slowly lost their emotional glow.

Everyone around them returned to normal life.

Phones were turned on.

Seat belts clicked open.

People reached for bags and coats.

But Emily remained still.

Her entire world had shifted somewhere above the clouds.

Daniel waited until the children stood up before moving.

He did not rush to help them.

He did not reach for their bags.

He simply watched Emily and waited for permission that she had not given.

That restraint was something she noticed.

Years ago, Daniel had always moved with certainty.

He had always believed he knew what was best.

Now he looked like someone afraid of making another mistake.

The little girl stepped into the aisle, still holding her teddy bear.

She looked up at Daniel.

"Are you coming with us?"

Emily looked at her daughter.

Daniel looked surprised by the question.

"I don't know."

The girl's eyebrows lowered.

"Why?"

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Because your mom gets to decide."

Emily felt the weight of that answer.

He was putting the choice in her hands.

May you like

The same hands that had slapped him hours earlier.

The same hands that had once held his before everything broke.
