Chương 3

Emily looked at him.

"Tell her."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The ballroom felt smaller.

Years of secrets pressed against him from every direction.

"I thought I was protecting you."

The little girl's eyebrows tightened.

"From what?"

Daniel had no answer.

Because the truth was not that he was protecting her.

The truth was that he had protected himself.

A woman near the back of the room quietly covered her mouth.

Someone whispered that they could not believe what they were seeing.

Daniel heard every word.

For the first time, he understood what it felt like to lose control of a story.

Emily walked toward the nearest table.

She placed the envelope down beside the wedding cake.

The perfect white cake.

The cake that had his and her names written across it.

She stared at those names.

Then she reached forward and touched the small decoration with both their initials.

"D and E."

Her voice was quiet.

"I spent months planning this day."

Daniel watched her.

"I chose every detail."

She looked at the flowers.

"The colors."

"The music."

"The room."

She turned back toward him.

"I wanted a memory."

Her eyes filled slightly.

"But you brought a secret instead."

Daniel's face showed pain.

"Emily."

She shook her head.

"No."

She stepped back.

"Don't apologize yet."

He stopped.

Because she was right.

He wasn't ready to apologize.

He was still trying to explain.

And that was the difference.

"I need to know something," Emily said.

Daniel looked at her.

"Did you ever love me?"

The question silenced everyone.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it was honest.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emily waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Five seconds.

The longer he stayed silent, the more the answer became clear.

Her eyes lowered.

A painful understanding settled over her.

"I see."

Daniel finally spoke.

"I did love you."

Emily looked up.

"But?"

He looked toward the little girl.

And that pause told her everything.

Emily nodded slowly.

"You loved the life I gave you."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

Her voice remained steady.

"You loved the image."

She pointed around the ballroom.

"The house."

"The company."

"The perfect wife."

"The perfect wedding."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"But not the truth."

Daniel looked broken.

For once, he had no defense.

No prepared statement.

No clever response.

No way to make himself look innocent.

The little girl walked back toward Emily.

She quietly asked.

"Are you leaving too?"

Emily looked down at her.

The question caught her completely off guard.

Because the little girl was not asking about the wedding.

She was asking about another person leaving her.

Another person disappearing.

Emily immediately knelt.

"No."

She gently held the girl's hands.

"I'm not leaving you right now."

The child looked at her carefully.

"Promise?"

Emily looked into her frightened eyes.

"I promise."

Behind them, Daniel heard the words.

And something inside him broke.

Because he realized the person he had lied to for years had shown more kindness to his daughter in minutes than he had shown in years.

The ballroom doors opened.

A woman entered quietly.

Everyone turned.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

Because he knew her.

And Emily knew from his face that this was not just another surprise.

This was someone connected to the secret.

The woman stood near the entrance.

Her eyes moved from Daniel.

To Emily.

To the little girl.

And then she whispered the words that made Daniel lose all color from his face.

"I thought you would never tell her."

"I thought you would never tell her."

The woman's voice was quiet.

But the effect it had on Daniel was immediate.

He stepped backward.

Not much.

Only a few inches.

But everyone noticed.

Because Daniel Whitmore was a man who never stepped back from anything.

Emily slowly turned toward the entrance.

The woman standing there looked exhausted.

She was probably in her late thirties.

Her hair was pulled back loosely.

Her simple dark coat looked completely different from the expensive clothing surrounding her.

She did not look like someone trying to create a scene.

She looked like someone who had carried a painful truth for far too long.

The little girl stared at her.

Then her small fingers tightened around Emily's hand.

"Mommy?"

The word traveled through the ballroom.

Emily's expression changed.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The truth had arrived before he could control it.

The woman walked slowly forward.

Her eyes never left Daniel.

"Hello, Daniel."

He did not answer.

"Say something."

His jaw tightened.

"Claire."

Emily looked between them.

The name meant something.

Not because she knew Claire.

Because she knew Daniel had never mentioned her.

Not once.

Not during seven years of marriage.

Not during conversations about his past.

Not during moments when couples shared everything about who they used to be.

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Who is she?"

Daniel remained silent.

Claire answered for him.

"I am the woman he left behind."

The guests reacted immediately.

A wave of whispers spread through the room.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Claire, this is not the way."

Emily almost laughed.

"The way?"

She looked at him.

"Interesting."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"You're worried about the way."

Her eyes moved around the ballroom.

"Not what happened."

He said nothing.

Claire stopped a few feet away.

"I didn't come here to destroy your wedding."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then why are you here?"

Claire looked at the little girl.

"Because she deserved the truth."

The little girl looked confused.

Her eyes moved between the three adults.

Emily noticed.

The child was watching every expression.

Every movement.

Trying to understand a world that was too complicated for someone so young.

Emily crouched beside her.

"What's your name?"

The little girl hesitated.

Then quietly answered.

"Sophie."

Emily smiled gently.

"Sophie."

The girl looked at her.

"You are not in trouble."

Sophie nodded slightly.

"Mommy said I shouldn't come here."

Claire's face softened.

"I know."

Sophie looked at her mother.

May you like

"But I wanted to see him."

Claire's eyes filled with sadness.
