Chương 6

The darkness outside the warehouse felt different now.
Before, it had been empty and cold.
Now it felt like something was waiting.
Daniel followed Marcus through the broken entrance while carrying Lily carefully in his arms.
The little girl had become quieter.
Not because she was no longer afraid.
Because she was exhausted.
Her head rested against Daniel’s shoulder, and her fingers remained wrapped around the fabric of his jacket.
Marcus walked several steps ahead, surrounded by his security team.
But Daniel noticed something unusual.
Marcus kept looking back.
Not at the guards.
Not at the road.
At Lily.
Every few seconds, he checked that she was still there.
That small movement told Daniel more than any rumor could.
This man might have been feared by others.
But he was terrified of losing his daughter.
They reached the black vehicle waiting near the warehouse.
A guard opened the back door.
Marcus immediately stopped.
"She rides with me."
The guard nodded and stepped aside.
Daniel hesitated.
He did not want to enter a vehicle owned by someone like Marcus Vale.
Everything about this situation felt impossible.
A few hours ago, he had been a struggling man walking through the city with a dead phone and barely enough money to survive.
Now he was standing beside a billionaire-level figure with armed guards surrounding him.
All because he had helped a child.
Marcus noticed his hesitation.
"You can leave if you want."
Daniel looked at him.
The answer surprised him.
Marcus continued.
"I won't stop you."
Daniel glanced toward the road.
He could walk away.
He could disappear.
He could pretend none of this happened.
But then he looked at Lily.
Her eyes opened slightly.
She looked at him with the same frightened expression she had when he found her.
The expression of someone who believed everyone eventually left.
Daniel sighed quietly.
Marcus gave a small nod.
Not gratitude.
Not yet.
Something closer to respect.
They entered the vehicle.
Lily sat between Daniel and Marcus.
For a few minutes, nobody spoke.
The only sounds were the engine and the rain beginning to hit the windows.
Daniel looked outside.
The city passed by in blurred lights.
Everything felt unreal.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
"You deserve to know why this happened."
Daniel looked at him.
"Then tell me."
Marcus stared forward.
"My daughter discovered something she was never supposed to see."
Lily looked down.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"What did she see?"
Marcus was silent.
Then he answered.
"Someone close to me was betraying me."
The words were simple.
But the way he said them made Daniel understand.
This was not a small betrayal.
"Victor?"
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Yes."
Daniel looked at Lily.
"She knew?"
Marcus nodded.
"She overheard a conversation."
"What kind of conversation?"
Marcus's hands tightened slightly.
"About plans to remove me."
The vehicle became quiet.
Daniel understood now.
Lily had not run away because she was afraid of punishment.
She had run because she discovered something dangerous.
Something adults around her were willing to kill for.
"Why didn't she come to you?" Daniel asked.
The question hurt Marcus.
Because he already knew the answer.
"Because she heard me angry."
Daniel frowned.
Marcus looked down.
"I was dealing with another problem that night."
His voice became quieter.
"I raised my voice."
Lily whispered.
"I thought you were angry at me."
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
"Lily."
She looked at him.
"I didn't know."
Marcus's face changed.
A powerful man who could intimidate entire rooms looked broken by four words from his daughter.
"I was never angry at you."
Lily looked away.
"But I didn't know that."
Marcus had no response.
Because she was right.
Daniel watched the moment between them.
He realized that the danger around them was not only outside.
There was a wound between father and daughter that had been there long before the warehouse.
A wound created by silence.
The vehicle continued through the city.
Eventually, they reached a large private property hidden away from the main roads.
Tall gates opened before them.
Security cameras followed their movement.
The place looked more like a fortress than a home.
Daniel carried Lily inside.
The interior was completely different from the warehouse.
Warm lights.
Expensive furniture.
Marble floors.
Everything looked perfect.
But Daniel noticed something.
The house felt empty.
A place could be huge and still feel lonely.
Marcus led them into a quiet room.
A woman appeared immediately.
She looked worried when she saw Lily.
"My God."
She rushed forward.
Marcus stopped her gently.
"Slowly."
The woman nodded and approached carefully.
Daniel watched as Lily allowed the woman to place a blanket around her shoulders.
"She needs a doctor," Marcus said.
"I already called one."
The woman looked at Daniel.
"Who is he?"
Marcus answered before Daniel could.
"The reason my daughter is alive tonight."
The woman stared.
Then she looked at Daniel with surprise.
"Thank you."
Daniel nodded.
He did not know what to say.
He had never been thanked for doing something he considered obvious.
The doctor arrived shortly after.
Daniel waited outside the room while Lily was examined.
For the first time all night, he was alone.
He looked down at his hands.
They were still dirty from the warehouse.
His jacket still smelled like dust and cold air.
He looked completely out of place in a house like this.
A few minutes later, Marcus appeared.
"She will be okay."
Daniel let out a breath he did not realize he was holding.
"Good."
Marcus stood beside him.
"You should go home."
Daniel looked at him.
"Home?"
Marcus nodded.
"You have been through enough."
Daniel almost laughed.
The idea of going back to his small apartment after everything that happened felt impossible.
But Marcus was right.
This was not his world.
"I guess I should."
Marcus reached into his coat and pulled out an envelope.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No."
Marcus looked surprised.
"You don't know what it is."
"I don't need to."
May you like
Marcus looked at him carefully.
"Most people would take it."
