Chương 4

Not just fear.

Confusion.

The man continued walking.

"I know you're scared."

A pause followed.

"You don't have to come out because they told you to."

Daniel noticed something.

The man was speaking directly to her.

Not ordering.

Not demanding.

Asking.

"Lily, please."

The girl's eyes moved toward the voice.

Daniel whispered, "Is that your father?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Daniel looked back toward the man.

The image did not match what he expected.

He had imagined someone cruel.

Someone threatening.

Someone who made children afraid.

Instead, he saw a man standing alone in an abandoned warehouse, looking like he had lost the most important thing in the world.

"Lily," the man said again.

"I made mistakes."

The words surprised Daniel.

The men behind him looked uncomfortable.

They were clearly not used to hearing their leader admit anything.

"I should have listened to you."

Silence.

"I should have noticed what was happening."

Lily's eyes widened.

Daniel noticed.

There was history between them.

Something had happened before she ran away.

Something neither of them wanted to talk about.

The man took another step forward.

"I know you think I only care about protecting you."

His voice became quieter.

"But I need you to understand something."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Lily looked down.

Daniel could feel her uncertainty.

She wanted to believe him.

But something was stopping her.

The man stopped walking.

Then he slowly removed his coat.

He placed it on the cold floor several feet away from him.

"I won't come closer."

Daniel noticed the gesture.

It was deliberate.

The man was giving her control.

Lily stared at the coat.

Her breathing changed.

Daniel leaned closer.

"You don't have to do anything you don't want to do."

She looked at him.

"You believe me?"

Daniel answered honestly.

"I don't know your father."

A small sadness crossed her face.

"But I know you were cold, scared, and alone."

He looked toward the man.

"And I know someone who loves you should have been there before tonight."

The words were not an accusation.

Just the truth.

The man heard them.

His expression changed slightly.

For the first time, he looked at Daniel.

Their eyes met.

There was tension between them.

Two strangers from completely different worlds.

One man who had lost everything.

Another who seemed to have everything.

Yet both were standing in the same place because of the same child.

"What is your name?" the man asked.

"Daniel."

The man nodded slowly.

"Daniel Carter."

The way he said the name made Daniel realize he already knew.

Or someone had already told him.

"You helped my daughter."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"She needed help."

The man studied him.

"Most people would have walked away."

Daniel gave a tired smile.

"Maybe."

He looked at Lily.

"But I couldn't."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The warehouse remained silent except for the sound of the wind.

Then Lily slowly stood.

Her legs shook.

Daniel immediately reached out.

But she held onto his hand and took a step forward.

Not toward her father.

Toward the space between them.

The man lowered himself slightly, making himself smaller.

Lily stopped several feet away.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I thought you were angry."

The man's face broke.

Not with anger.

With regret.

"I was scared."

She looked confused.

"I thought I lost you."

The girl stared at him.

"I thought you would punish me."

The man closed his eyes for a moment.

That sentence hurt him more than any injury could.

"No."

His voice cracked slightly.

"Never."

Lily looked back at Daniel.

Then at her father.

The distance between them slowly became smaller.

But before she could take another step, one of the men outside suddenly touched his earpiece.

His expression changed.

The entire mood inside the warehouse shifted.

The man standing across from Lily noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

The guard hesitated.

Then lowered his voice.

"Sir."

"There is a problem."

The man looked toward the entrance.

"What kind of problem?"

The guard swallowed.

"They found out she was here."

A cold silence filled the warehouse.

Daniel felt Lily grab his hand again.

The man who had come searching for his daughter looked toward the darkness outside.

And for the first time that night, Daniel saw something that looked like fear on his face.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for Lily.

The warehouse became silent after those words.

Everyone understood that something had changed.

The men who had been searching with confidence now looked uncertain.

Daniel watched the powerful man in front of him.

A few minutes earlier, he had seemed like someone who controlled every situation.

Now he looked like a father realizing the danger was much bigger than he expected.

"What did they find?" the man asked.

The guard looked toward the floor.

"They know she escaped."

The man’s jaw tightened.

"That is not what I asked."

The guard hesitated.

"They know she was helped."

Daniel felt a strange weight settle in his chest.

He understood immediately.

This was not only about finding Lily anymore.

Someone was interested in who had protected her.

The man looked toward Daniel.

For the first time, his expression was not suspicion.

It was concern.

"You need to leave."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

The man stepped closer.

"You don't understand what you stepped into."

Daniel glanced at Lily.

The little girl was still holding his hand.

"I understand that she needed someone."

The man looked at him carefully.

"You think this is about a missing child."

He paused.

"It is not."

The wind moved through the broken windows again.

Daniel felt the cold air against his face.

"Then tell me what it is about."

The man remained silent.

The silence itself was an answer.

There were things he did not want to say.

Things he could not say.

Lily looked between them.

"Father."

The man immediately softened when he heard her voice.

"Yes?"

"Is he in danger because of me?"

May you like

The question changed everything.

The man's expression broke slightly.
