Chương 2

He watched every breath she took.
Every small movement.
Every sign that she was still fighting.
Then the girl whispered something.
It was so quiet that Daniel almost missed it.
"What did you say?" he asked.
Her eyes closed briefly before opening again.
"Don't let them find me."
Daniel froze.
The words were filled with fear.
Not the fear of being alone.
A different kind of fear.
The kind that came from knowing someone was searching.
His expression changed.
He looked toward the entrance of the warehouse.
For the first time that night, he realized this was not just a story about a lost child.
Something had happened before he found her.
Something serious.
The girl tightened her grip on his jacket.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Who are they?"
She did not answer.
Her breathing became faster.
Daniel immediately comforted her.
"You're safe now."
But as he held her in the darkness, he had no idea that the child in his arms was connected to a secret powerful enough to change both of their lives forever.
Before sunrise, the abandoned warehouse would no longer be empty.
People would come looking for the girl.
And Daniel Carter, a man who thought he had nothing left to lose, was about to discover that saving her had placed him in the middle of a dangerous world he never knew existed.
The first sound came from outside the warehouse.
It was not the wind.
It was an engine.
Daniel lifted his head slowly, his body instantly becoming alert.
The girl felt the change in him and tightened her fingers around his jacket.
He looked down at her frightened face and forced himself to remain calm.
"Stay quiet," he whispered.
"I’m right here."
The headlights appeared through the broken windows, cutting thin lines of white across the dusty floor.
Daniel's heart began beating faster.
He had spent enough time on the streets to recognize the difference between someone searching and someone hunting.
These vehicles were not arriving by accident.
The warehouse entrance remained several yards away, but Daniel could already hear doors opening outside.
Heavy footsteps followed.
More than one person.
The girl closed her eyes.
Her small body started trembling again.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"Hey," he said softly.
"Look at me."
She slowly opened her eyes.
"You are not alone anymore."
For a moment, the fear in her expression softened.
Then a loud voice echoed through the building.
"Search every corner."
Daniel froze.
The voice carried authority.
Not a desperate family member calling for a missing child.
A command.
The kind of command people obeyed without hesitation.
He looked around the warehouse.
There were few places to hide.
Broken machines.
Stacks of damaged boxes.
A narrow storage area behind a collapsed wall.
Nothing that would protect them for long.
Daniel carefully shifted the girl in his arms.
He could feel how weak she was.
She barely had the strength to hold herself upright.
Moving quickly could make her condition worse.
But staying in the open was impossible.
He lifted her carefully and carried her toward the darkest corner of the warehouse.
The girl's head rested against his shoulder.
Her breathing remained quiet but uneven.
Daniel moved slowly, making sure every step was controlled.
The concrete floor was covered with debris.
One wrong movement could create noise.
He reached the hidden area behind the old machinery and lowered himself with the girl still in his arms.
He placed his worn coat around her shoulders.
"Can you stay silent for me?" he whispered.
The girl nodded weakly.
Her eyes stayed locked on his face.
Daniel noticed something unusual.
Even with all her fear, she was not afraid of him.
She was afraid of what was coming.
Outside, footsteps moved closer.
A flashlight beam passed through the broken windows.
"Check the back room."
Daniel held his breath.
The girl suddenly grabbed his hand.
Her fingers were cold.
"Don't let them take me," she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
There was something in her voice that made him understand this was not a simple misunderstanding.
This child had been running from something.
Or someone.
"I won't let anyone hurt you," Daniel said.
He did not know if he could keep that promise.
He did not know who was outside.
He did not know what kind of danger he was facing.
But he meant every word.
A shadow moved across the warehouse entrance.
Three men stepped inside.
They wore dark clothing and moved with discipline.
They did not look like ordinary searchers.
They moved like people trained to find what they were looking for.
The first man held a flashlight and scanned the room.
"She was here," another man said.
"Her tracks stop inside."
Daniel watched silently from the darkness.
His mind raced.
How could a little girl be important enough for people like this to search an abandoned warehouse in the middle of the night?
The man with the flashlight moved closer.
The beam passed over broken chairs.
Dusty shelves.
Old equipment.
Then it stopped.
Daniel's muscles tightened.
The light was getting closer.
The girl buried her face against his shoulder.
Daniel slowly moved one hand toward a piece of broken wood beside him.
He hated the thought of fighting.
He had never been someone who searched for trouble.
But he also knew there were moments when doing nothing was worse.
The flashlight moved again.
A few feet closer.
Then a voice came from outside.
"Stop."
Everyone inside the warehouse froze.
The man with the flashlight turned.
A tall figure stood at the entrance.
Even from a distance, Daniel could see the difference between this person and the others.
The men immediately stepped aside.
The atmosphere changed.
The newcomer did not need to raise his voice.
Everyone already listened.
"Did you find her?"
The flashlight man lowered his head.
"Not yet."
A long silence followed.
Then the figure walked deeper into the warehouse.
Daniel could not see his face clearly.
Only the expensive coat.
May you like
The controlled movements.
The quiet anger.
