Chương 5

He looked at his daughter.
Then at Daniel.
"No."
Daniel noticed the hesitation.
The man was lying.
Not to protect himself.
To protect Lily.
Daniel understood that kind of lie.
It was the kind people told when the truth was too frightening for someone they loved.
The man walked closer and lowered himself near Lily.
"Listen to me."
She looked at him.
"You did nothing wrong."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I ran away."
"Because you were scared."
He paused.
"And I should have made sure you never felt that way."
The apology seemed to surprise everyone around him.
The guards looked away.
They had probably never seen this side of their leader.
Daniel wondered how many people knew this man only as a name.
A powerful person.
A dangerous person.
But here, inside this broken warehouse, he was simply a father trying to reach his child.
A sudden sound came from outside.
A vehicle approaching quickly.
The guards reacted instantly.
Hands moved toward weapons.
Daniel noticed the movement and pulled Lily closer.
The man immediately raised his hand.
"Nobody moves."
His voice was calm.
But everyone obeyed.
The vehicle stopped outside.
No one spoke.
Then the warehouse doors opened.
A man in a dark suit entered.
Unlike the others, he looked relaxed.
Too relaxed.
That worried Daniel more.
People who were truly dangerous did not always need to show it.
"Victor."
The newcomer smiled slightly.
The father’s expression hardened.
"What are you doing here?"
The man looked around the warehouse.
His eyes stopped on Lily.
Then moved to Daniel.
"So this is the person who found her."
Daniel felt uncomfortable under the man's stare.
Lily stepped closer to him.
The movement was small.
But everyone noticed.
Victor smiled.
"Interesting."
The girl's father moved between them.
"Choose your next words carefully."
Victor ignored the warning.
"After everything you've done, you still believe you can protect her?"
The room became colder.
Daniel did not understand what was happening.
But he understood one thing.
These men were not friends.
The father stared at Victor.
"You were supposed to protect her."
A silence followed.
Then Daniel saw something change.
The realization.
The anger.
The betrayal.
Victor slowly smiled.
"Finally."
He looked around the warehouse.
"You're starting to understand."
Lily grabbed Daniel's hand harder.
Daniel looked at her.
She was afraid of Victor.
Not confused.
Not uncertain.
Afraid.
The father noticed too.
His expression became dangerous.
"You were involved."
Victor laughed quietly.
"You always thought your enemies were outside the house."
He stepped forward.
"You never considered the people standing beside you."
The guards shifted uncomfortably.
Daniel could feel the tension rising.
This was not an argument.
It was an explosion waiting to happen.
The father moved closer to Lily.
"Stay behind me."
But Lily did not move.
She looked at Daniel instead.
As if she needed to know he was still there.
Daniel squeezed her hand gently.
"I’m not going anywhere."
Victor looked at him.
"You really don't know who you are protecting."
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"A child."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Victor's expression changed.
Almost like he could not understand how someone could answer so simply.
Then he smiled.
"That is exactly why you are a problem."
The father turned toward his guards.
"Get Lily out."
The guards moved immediately.
But before they could reach her, the lights inside the warehouse suddenly went dark.
Complete darkness covered the room.
Someone shouted.
Footsteps moved in different directions.
Daniel heard Lily gasp.
He reached for her instantly.
"Stay with me."
A loud crash echoed through the warehouse.
Something fell.
Someone yelled.
The darkness became chaos.
Daniel kept one arm around Lily and used the other to protect her.
He could hear movement all around them.
He could not see who was where.
Then a small beam of light appeared.
The father had turned on a flashlight.
His face was different now.
The calm control was gone.
Only urgency remained.
"Everyone stay where you are."
The command was directed at everyone.
Then Daniel noticed something.
Victor was gone.
The father looked around.
His expression became cold.
"He was never here to talk."
Daniel looked at him.
"Then why did he come?"
The man stared into the darkness.
"To see if Lily was alive."
A pause.
"And to see who saved her."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Why?"
The father looked at him.
"Because whoever helped my daughter is now a target."
Daniel looked down at Lily.
The girl was exhausted.
Terrified.
But alive.
He knew he should leave.
Every instinct told him this was dangerous.
He was a man with no money, no power, and no protection.
He had accidentally entered a world where people disappeared because of secrets.
But when Lily looked up at him, he remembered the first moment he found her.
A child falling in the cold.
A child who thought nobody would come.
Daniel could not walk away now.
The father watched him silently.
"You should hate me for bringing you into this."
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't even know you."
The man almost smiled.
"Most people would consider that a reason to hate me."
Daniel looked toward Lily.
"I only know she needed someone."
The father studied him for a long moment.
Then he spoke quietly.
"My name is Marcus Vale."
Daniel had heard that name before.
Not personally.
But from whispers.
Stories.
Rumors.
A name people mentioned carefully.
A man whose influence reached places ordinary people never saw.
Marcus Vale.
The father looked at Lily.
"She is my daughter."
Then he looked back at Daniel.
"And tonight, because you saved her, you are part of this whether you want to be or not."
Outside, more vehicles approached.
The night was becoming louder.
More dangerous.
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
"We need to move."
Daniel looked down at Lily.
"Where?"
Marcus answered with a seriousness that made Daniel understand how bad things had become.
"Somewhere they won't expect us."
The warehouse doors opened.
May you like
Cold wind rushed inside.
And as Daniel carried Lily into the darkness outside, he realized the freezing night was no longer the greatest danger waiting for them.
