Chương 5

A conversation that would prove Lily’s accident was never an accident at all.

Emily had spent years learning that the truth rarely appeared all at once.

It came in fragments.

A missed detail.

A forgotten message.

A person who finally found the courage to speak.

And now those fragments were beginning to form a picture that Daniel could no longer escape.

The following afternoon, Emily sat in the hospital waiting area with a copy of the latest evidence report.

The room was quiet except for the distant sounds of doctors and nurses moving through the halls.

Lily was resting after another round of medical checks.

For the first time since Emily arrived, her sister had managed to sleep without waking up frightened.

That alone felt like a victory.

But Emily knew she could not stop.

Not yet.

Her phone rang.

It was the investigator assigned to review the incident.

“Captain Carter,” the man said.

“Did you find something?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

Emily stood immediately.

“What is it?”

“We recovered data from Lily’s phone backup.”

Her grip tightened around the phone.

“Daniel deleted the messages, but he did not erase everything.”

The investigator continued.

“There was a conversation between Daniel and another person.”

Emily felt a cold feeling move through her.

“Who?”

“We’re still confirming the identity.”

“Read me the messages.”

The investigator hesitated.

“They are concerning.”

“Read them.”

A few seconds passed.

Then he began.

The messages were between Daniel and someone saved only under a single letter.

A.

The first messages seemed ordinary.

Plans.

Questions.

Small details about schedules.

But then the tone changed.

Daniel had written that Lily was becoming suspicious.

He had written that she was asking too many questions.

He had written that he needed more time.

Emily closed her eyes.

More time for what?

The investigator continued.

“There is one message that stands out.”

“What does it say?”

A pause.

“Daniel wrote, ‘If she tells Emily, everything is over.’”

Emily felt anger rise inside her.

Not surprise.

Not anymore.

Anger.

Because that sentence confirmed what Lily had been trying to say.

Daniel was not protecting a misunderstanding.

He was protecting himself.

“What about the person named A?”

“We’re working on identifying them.”

Emily looked through the hospital window toward Lily’s room.

“Find out who it is.”

“We will.”

After the call ended, Emily remained still.

She knew this changed everything.

Daniel had not just lost control during one argument.

He had planned around the possibility of being exposed.

He had prepared for Lily to speak.

He had prepared for the truth to come out.

And that meant someone else had been involved.

Someone who knew more than they admitted.

When Emily returned to Lily’s room, she found her sister awake.

“You look like you found something,” Lily said.

Emily sat beside her.

“I did.”

Lily immediately became nervous.

“What is it?”

Emily took a moment before answering.

“There were messages.”

Lily looked down.

“From Daniel?”

“Yes.”

The fear returned briefly to Lily’s eyes.

Emily noticed and softened her voice.

“You don’t have to be afraid of what they say.”

Lily looked at her.

“What if it proves I was right?”

Emily held her hand.

“Then it means you trusted your own memory for a reason.”

Lily looked away.

“I kept thinking maybe I imagined it.”

“You didn’t.”

The certainty in Emily’s voice made Lily emotional.

For so long, she had lived in doubt.

She had questioned every feeling.

Every memory.

Every moment when something inside her told her that something was wrong.

Now someone was finally telling her that she had been right to listen.

Emily showed her the message.

Lily read the words silently.

Her expression changed.

“He was planning this.”

Emily nodded.

“That’s what it looks like.”

Lily covered her mouth.

“I thought he was just angry.”

Emily looked at her carefully.

“Sometimes people show their true selves when they think they are losing control.”

A tear fell down Lily’s face.

“I loved him.”

Emily squeezed her hand.

“I know.”

“I defended him.”

“I know.”

“I told people they didn’t understand him.”

Emily looked at her.

“You were trying to believe in someone you cared about.”

Lily wiped her eyes.

“That feels so embarrassing.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“Being betrayed is not the same as being foolish.”

Those words stayed with Lily.

Because for the first time, she stopped blaming herself for someone else’s choices.

Later that evening, Margaret returned to the hospital.

She looked different.

The confidence she once carried was gone.

She approached Emily carefully.

“I need to tell you something.”

Emily studied her.

“What?”

Margaret looked toward Lily.

“I found something in Daniel’s apartment.”

Emily immediately became alert.

“What did you find?”

“A second phone.”

The room went quiet.

Lily looked up.

“A second phone?”

Margaret nodded.

“I didn’t know about it before.”

Emily stood.

“Where is it?”

Margaret reached into her bag and pulled out a small device sealed in a plastic evidence bag.

“I gave it to the investigator.”

Emily looked at it.

“Did you see anything on it?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Only one thing.”

“What?”

“There was a photograph.”

Emily waited.

Margaret’s voice became unsteady.

“It was taken the night Lily was hurt.”

Lily froze.

“What photograph?”

Margaret looked at her with sadness.

“I don’t know.”

Before anyone could continue, the investigator entered the room.

He carried a folder and immediately looked serious.

“Captain Carter.”

Emily turned.

“Did you identify A?”

The investigator nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer changed the entire atmosphere.

“Who is it?”

He looked between Emily and Lily.

“It’s someone connected to Daniel.”

A long silence followed.

“Who?”

The investigator opened the folder.

“His business partner.”

Emily frowned.

“Why would his business partner be involved?”

The investigator placed several documents on the table.

“Because Daniel wasn’t just hiding what happened to Lily.”

He looked at Emily.

“He was hiding financial problems.”

Lily’s face changed.

Daniel had never mentioned anything about money.

May you like

The investigator continued.

“He was afraid Lily would discover he had been using her accounts.”
