Chương 6

The sound of footsteps grew louder above them.
But Daniel no longer felt afraid.
Because the secret his family had carried for decades was no longer hidden.
And Adrian Vale was about to learn that protecting the truth was not the same as burying it.
The footsteps above them grew louder until the hidden room seemed to hold its breath.
Daniel could hear doors opening throughout the mansion.
The people searching for them were no longer trying to be careful.
They knew where they were.
Adrian looked toward the passage entrance with a calm expression, but Daniel noticed the slight tension in his eyes.
For the first time, Adrian Vale looked like a man who was not completely in control.
“Who are they?” Daniel asked.
Adrian did not answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who did you bring here?”
Adrian looked at him.
“People who understand what happens when secrets are left uncovered.”
Anna shook her head.
“You mean people who clean up your mistakes.”
Adrian ignored her.
Daniel watched the two of them carefully.
There was history between them.
Not just fear.
Pain.
Betrayal.
Something that had lasted for years.
Lily quietly approached Daniel.
“Dad, what do we do now?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
The question reminded him of something his father had once told him when he was young.
A person’s character was not measured by the problems they avoided.
It was measured by the moments when they had no choice but to face them.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“We stay together.”
Anna nodded.
“That is what your father would have wanted.”
Adrian suddenly moved toward the exit.
Daniel immediately blocked him.
“Where are you going?”
Adrian looked at him.
“To stop you from making a decision you cannot undo.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You mean exposing you.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“You think the world will thank you?”
“No.”
Daniel held up the flash drive.
“But my family deserves the truth.”
Before Adrian could respond, the hidden door suddenly shook.
Someone was forcing it open from the other side.
Anna looked around the room.
“There has to be another way out.”
Daniel searched through the shelves.
His father had built this place for emergencies.
There had to be another escape route.
He ran his hand along the walls until he felt a small crack behind one of the wooden panels.
The same symbol appeared again.
He pressed against it.
Nothing happened.
Then he remembered the key.
He inserted it into the hidden slot.
A section of the wall opened slowly.
Behind it was a narrow staircase leading upward.
Daniel looked at Anna.
“You knew about this?”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
“Your grandfather only told my mother about one entrance.”
Daniel looked at the stairs.
His father had prepared more than one way to protect his family.
“Everyone moves.”
Lily followed Daniel first.
Anna stayed close behind.
Adrian remained still.
Daniel turned.
“You coming?”
Adrian stared at the open passage.
For a moment, Daniel expected him to refuse.
Instead, Adrian stepped forward.
“I want to see what Robert left behind.”
Daniel did not trust him.
But they had no time.
They climbed the stairs quickly.
The passage led them behind the old library on the first floor.
Daniel pushed open the hidden door.
They entered just as another group of people rushed into the study.
Through the gap in the bookshelf, Daniel saw three men searching the room.
They wore dark clothes and moved with the confidence of people who believed nobody could stop them.
One of them picked up the empty wooden box.
“He already found the archive.”
Another man looked angry.
“Then find him.”
Daniel slowly closed the hidden door.
The mansion that had once been his childhood home now felt like a battlefield.
Every room carried memories.
Every hallway carried a secret.
Anna looked at the men below.
“They work for Adrian.”
Adrian said nothing.
Daniel turned toward him.
“Is that true?”
Adrian remained silent.
That was enough.
Daniel felt betrayed.
Even after everything, he had hoped there was some part of Adrian that was different.
But maybe his father had been right.
Fear could make good people make terrible choices.
They moved through the mansion quietly.
Daniel led them toward the old garage where his father had kept old vehicles and tools.
They needed a way out.
But before they reached the door, Adrian spoke.
“You should know something.”
Daniel stopped.
“I am listening.”
Adrian looked at Anna.
“Your grandfather did not just hide evidence.”
“What does that mean?”
“He hid something that could destroy more than me.”
Anna looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Your mother was not only investigating my organization.”
“She discovered what Robert Carter had done years earlier.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“My father?”
Adrian nodded.
“He was not innocent.”
The words hit harder than Daniel expected.
He had spent the night discovering his father’s secrets.
Now he was being told there was another secret hidden beneath those.
Anna looked at Adrian with anger.
“You are lying.”
“Am I?”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“Your father told you about protecting Sarah.”
“But did he tell you why she needed protection?”
Daniel felt the weight of the question.
He looked at the flash drive inside his jacket.
Maybe the answers were there.
Maybe his father had known this moment would come.
They reached the garage.
Daniel found the old car keys hanging on the wall.
One key had his father’s initials engraved into it.
Robert had prepared this too.
They got into the vehicle quickly.
Daniel started the engine.
The old car struggled before finally coming alive.
As they drove away from the mansion, Daniel looked back through the mirror.
The house disappeared into the rain.
The place where he grew up.
The place where every secret had been buried.
Lily sat quietly in the back seat.
Anna sat beside Daniel.
Adrian remained in the passenger seat, silent.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
May you like
Finally, Daniel broke the silence.
“Tell me the truth.”
