Chương 1

"The rain had already covered the windows of the old family mansion when Daniel Carter heard his daughter whisper that she had found something hidden beneath the floorboards.

He froze in the hallway, his hand still resting on the wooden frame of the doorway, unable to understand why his twelve-year-old daughter Lily sounded more afraid than curious.

For twenty years, Daniel had believed he knew every secret inside the house that his parents had left him.

He knew the cracks in the walls, the loose steps on the staircase, and the quiet corners where childhood memories still seemed to live.

But he had never imagined that the biggest mystery of his family would be hidden directly beneath his own feet.

Lily stood in the empty study holding a small dusty wooden box against her chest.

Her blonde hair was slightly messy from searching through the damaged floorboards, and her blue eyes were fixed on her father with a mixture of fear and confusion.

“Dad, I think someone wanted us to find this,” she said softly.

Daniel walked closer and noticed the old lock on the box had already been broken.

The box looked like it had survived decades of being forgotten, covered in dirt and wrapped with a faded piece of blue fabric.

He slowly took it from Lily’s hands and placed it on the large wooden desk near the window.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The sound of heavy rain hitting the glass filled the silence between them.

Daniel felt an unfamiliar feeling growing inside his chest.

It was the same feeling he had experienced years ago when his father disappeared without explanation.

A feeling that something important was being hidden from him.

His father, Robert Carter, had always been a respected businessman in their small town.

Everyone remembered him as a generous man who helped neighbors, supported charities, and protected his family.

But after his sudden death fifteen years earlier, Daniel discovered that the perfect image of his father had many unanswered questions behind it.

There were missing documents, strange phone calls, and old friends who refused to talk about the past.

Daniel had spent years convincing himself that some mysteries were better left alone.

He had built a peaceful life with his wife Emily and their daughter, far away from the rumors surrounding his family.

But now the past had returned.

Lily carefully opened the box while Daniel watched.

Inside was a collection of old photographs, handwritten letters, and a small silver key attached to a leather string.

Daniel picked up the first photograph and immediately felt his breath disappear.

It showed his father standing outside the mansion with a young woman Daniel had never seen before.

The woman was holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written three words.

“Protect her always.”

Daniel’s hands began to shake.

Lily noticed his expression and stepped closer.

“Who is she?” she asked.

Daniel did not answer.

He had no idea.

But deep inside, he felt a terrible possibility forming.

His father had a secret family.

Or maybe something even worse had happened.

He opened one of the letters carefully.

The paper was yellow and fragile, but the handwriting was unmistakably his father’s.

“My son Daniel,” the letter began.

Daniel immediately stopped reading.

His father had written his name.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

He continued reading silently as the memories of his childhood came rushing back.

“By the time you discover this, I may no longer be able to explain the truth myself.”

“I know you will feel betrayed, and I understand if you cannot forgive me.”

“But everything I did was to protect someone you love.”

Daniel lowered the letter slowly.

Protect someone he loved.

Those words made no sense.

He looked at Lily, who was waiting for an explanation.

He wanted to tell her everything was fine.

He wanted to close the box and pretend they had never found it.

But he knew he could not.

The secret had already entered their lives.

“Dad, what does it say?” Lily asked.

Daniel looked at his daughter and forced himself to remain calm.

“It says my grandfather was hiding something,” he replied.

Lily frowned.

“Something dangerous?”

Daniel looked back at the photograph.

He remembered his father’s final days.

Robert had been sick, but he had never looked afraid.

The only time Daniel saw fear in his father’s eyes was the night before he died.

That night, Robert grabbed Daniel’s arm and told him one sentence he never forgot.

“Never trust someone who is afraid of the truth.”

At the time, Daniel thought his father was confused because of his illness.

Now he wondered if those words had been a warning.

He searched through the box again and found another envelope hidden beneath the photographs.

Unlike the others, this envelope had a name written on it.

“Sarah.”

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

The woman in the photograph.

He opened the envelope with trembling fingers.

Inside was a letter from his father addressed to Sarah.

“My dear Sarah, I am sorry that our family had to suffer because of my choices.”

“I promised I would protect you and the child, and I will keep that promise until my last breath.”

Daniel stopped reading.

The child.

There was a child.

Lily looked at him carefully.

“Dad, are you okay?”

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

The baby in the picture was impossible to identify.

But the thought that his father had hidden another child for years felt like a storm destroying everything he believed.

Before he could say anything, the front door of the mansion slammed shut.

Both Daniel and Lily turned toward the hallway.

Someone had entered the house.

Daniel quickly closed the box and moved in front of his daughter.

The mansion was supposed to be empty.

Emily was visiting her sister across town.

No one else had a reason to be there.

Heavy footsteps approached from the hallway.
