Chương 3
“I don’t know everything.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know enough.”
Victor pointed at the old box.
“Your father kept records of everything.”
Daniel looked down.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because you were his weakness.”
The answer shocked Daniel.
Victor continued.
“Robert could face enemies, threats, and lawsuits.”
“But he could not risk losing his son.”
Daniel looked away.
He remembered being a child and seeing his father come home late at night.
He remembered the tired look on his face.
He remembered asking why he was always worried.
Robert had smiled and said everything was fine.
Maybe it never was.
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone in the room froze.
Victor immediately turned toward the window.
“That was not me.”
Daniel moved toward the curtains.
“Who is outside?”
Victor’s expression changed.
“We need to leave.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You came here because you wanted me to know the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Then I’m not running.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
For the first time, his voice sounded desperate.
“Your father spent years keeping you away from this because he knew what these people could do.”
Daniel looked toward Lily.
The fear in Victor’s voice made him realize the danger was real.
Before he could respond, the lights inside the mansion suddenly turned off.
The study fell into darkness.
Lily grabbed her father’s hand.
Daniel heard movement in the hallway.
Slow footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
Victor whispered.
“They found us.”
Daniel reached for the old wooden box.
He grabbed the silver key attached to the leather string.
The key felt strangely familiar, even though he had never seen it before.
The footsteps moved closer.
Daniel looked around the dark room.
There was nowhere to hide.
Then he noticed something carved into the wooden wall behind the bookshelf.
A small symbol.
The same symbol engraved on the silver key.
He quickly moved toward it.
“What are you doing?” Victor whispered.
“My father left this for me.”
Daniel placed the key into the hidden lock.
A quiet click echoed through the room.
The bookshelf slowly moved away from the wall.
Behind it was a narrow hidden passage covered in dust.
Lily stared at the secret entrance.
“My grandfather built this?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The footsteps outside stopped.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Daniel Carter.”
The voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Open the door.”
Daniel recognized something in that voice.
It was not anger.
It was confidence.
Someone who believed they had already won.
Victor looked terrified.
“Take Lily and go through the passage.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What about you?”
Victor stared at the closed study door.
“I need to buy you time.”
Daniel wanted to argue.
But before he could speak, the door handle began turning slowly.
The person outside was coming in.
Daniel grabbed Lily’s hand and pulled her toward the hidden passage.
As they stepped inside, he looked back one last time.
Victor stood alone in the darkness, facing the door.
The same man who had helped hide the truth for decades was finally preparing to reveal it.
The door opened.
Daniel heard Victor say one sentence before the passage closed behind him.
“You should have been afraid of Robert Carter’s son.”
Then the hidden wall sealed shut.
Daniel and Lily moved deeper into the hidden passage, surrounded by darkness and the sound of their own breathing.
The narrow hallway smelled like old wood and dust, as if no one had walked through it for decades.
Daniel kept one hand on the wall and the other tightly holding Lily’s hand.
Behind them, the secret entrance had closed completely, leaving no sign that the passage existed.
Lily looked up at her father.
“Dad, what is happening?”
Daniel wanted to answer with certainty.
He wanted to tell her that everything would be okay.
But for the first time in his life, he did not have an answer.
“I don’t know,” he whispered.
Lily stopped walking.
Daniel turned back toward her.
The fear in her eyes hurt him more than anything else.
“I’m sorry you got dragged into this.”
Lily shook her head.
“You didn’t drag me.”
She looked toward the darkness ahead.
“We found it together.”
Those words reminded Daniel that his daughter was stronger than he realized.
Even though she was scared, she was still standing beside him.
He squeezed her hand gently.
“We stay together.”
Lily nodded.
They continued through the passage until they reached a small underground room beneath the mansion.
Daniel recognized the place immediately.
It was directly below his father’s old office.
The room was filled with shelves covered in old files, photographs, and boxes.
A single lamp hung from the ceiling, powered by a hidden generator that somehow still worked after all these years.
Daniel stepped inside slowly.
His father had created an entire hidden archive beneath their home.
For years, it had been waiting for him.
On the center table sat a large leather folder with Daniel’s name written across it.
His heart tightened.
He approached the table and opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Unlike the previous one, this letter looked newer.
It had been written shortly before Robert Carter died.
Daniel unfolded it.
“My son Daniel.”
He paused before reading further.
The familiar handwriting made the past feel alive again.
“If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.”
“I wish I could have told you everything myself.”
“But the people involved were closer than you could imagine.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
The words felt heavier with every second.
“Your sister Sarah was brave.”
“She discovered evidence that powerful people were using their influence to destroy innocent lives.”
“She wanted to expose them.”
“But she was betrayed by someone she trusted.”
Daniel’s eyes moved across the page.
“She was not lost because she was weak.”
“She was lost because she believed people could still choose what was right.”
May you like
Daniel stopped reading.
The sentence felt like a warning.
