Chương 2

Then a familiar voice spoke.

“Daniel, you were never supposed to find that box.”

Daniel recognized the voice immediately.

It belonged to Victor Hayes, his father’s former business partner.

Victor stepped into the study wearing a dark coat covered with rain.

He looked older than Daniel remembered, but his eyes carried the same cold confidence.

Daniel stared at him.

“How did you know we found it?”

Victor ignored the question.

His attention moved toward the wooden box on the desk.

“Your father made a mistake leaving that behind.”

Daniel felt anger rising inside him.

“My father hid secrets from me for years, and now you show up telling me I should not know the truth?”

Victor remained silent.

Lily held onto her father’s arm.

Daniel noticed her fear and immediately softened his voice.

“You need to leave.”

Victor looked at Lily and then back at Daniel.

“You have no idea what your father protected you from.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then explain it.”

Victor looked toward the photograph lying on the desk.

“That woman was the reason your family almost lost everything.”

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“Who was she?”

Victor’s expression changed for the first time.

A small sign of fear appeared on his face.

“She was someone your father promised to save.”

The rain outside grew louder.

Daniel realized Victor was not there to scare him.

He was there because he was afraid.

And for the first time in many years, Daniel understood that his father’s secret was not about betrayal.

It was about survival.

Daniel stared at Victor for several seconds, trying to understand the fear hidden beneath the older man’s confident expression.

The man who had spent decades controlling business deals and intimidating anyone who questioned him now looked like someone standing in front of a danger he could not escape.

“Start talking,” Daniel said.

Victor glanced toward Lily again.

“This conversation is not for a child.”

Daniel immediately moved closer to his daughter.

“Then you should have thought about that before walking into my house uninvited.”

Victor sighed and looked down at the floor.

For a moment, he seemed to be fighting with himself.

Then he slowly pulled a small envelope from inside his coat.

“I came here because I knew this day would happen eventually.”

Daniel did not take the envelope.

“What is it?”

“Proof.”

Victor placed it on the desk beside the old wooden box.

“Proof that your father was trying to correct the biggest mistake of his life.”

Daniel looked at the envelope but did not touch it.

“My father spent his entire life hiding the truth.”

Victor shook his head.

“No, Daniel.”

“He spent his life protecting the truth.”

Those words disturbed Daniel more than any accusation could have.

Because somewhere deep inside, he still wanted to believe his father had been a good man.

He wanted to believe the memories of childhood were real.

But the secrets surrounding Robert Carter had created a painful distance between the father he remembered and the man he had discovered.

“Why are you here now?” Daniel asked.

Victor looked toward the photograph.

“Because someone else knows about that box.”

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

“Who?”

Victor hesitated.

“That is the part your father was afraid of.”

Daniel picked up the envelope and opened it.

Inside were several documents and a recent photograph.

The photograph showed the same mansion.

But unlike the old picture, this one had been taken only a few days earlier.

Someone had been watching the house.

Daniel turned the picture over.

Written on the back were five words.

“He knows the truth now.”

Daniel’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Who took this?”

Victor looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You think I wanted any of this?”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My father trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“And you are telling me you had nothing to do with his secrets?”

Victor looked at him with a painful expression.

“I helped him hide them.”

The confession filled the room.

Lily looked between the two men, trying to understand the conversation she was witnessing.

Daniel felt anger burning inside him.

“You helped him lie to me?”

Victor lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised Daniel.

He expected excuses.

He expected denial.

Instead, Victor accepted the blame.

“Why?”

Victor walked toward the window and watched the rain falling over the garden.

“Because your father believed you deserved a normal life.”

Daniel followed him with his eyes.

“My life was built on a lie.”

Victor turned around.

“No.”

“Your life was built because of one.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Twenty-five years ago, your father discovered something about a powerful group of people in this town.”

“What group?”

“People who controlled everything.”

“The banks, the police, the businesses.”

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds impossible.”

Victor gave a sad smile.

“I used to think the same thing.”

He looked at the photograph of Sarah and the baby.

“Until your father tried to expose them.”

Daniel looked at the woman again.

“Who was Sarah?”

Victor was silent for a long time.

Then he answered.

“She was your father’s daughter.”

The room became completely quiet.

Daniel felt as if the floor beneath him had disappeared.

“What did you say?”

Victor repeated the words carefully.

“Sarah was your father’s daughter.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“She was born before you.”

“No.”

“Your father never told you because he was afraid.”

Daniel stared at him.

The idea was impossible.

His father had another child.

A daughter.

A sister Daniel never knew existed.

Lily looked at her father with concern.

“Dad?”

Daniel realized he had forgotten she was there.

He turned toward her and tried to control his emotions.

“I’m okay.”

But he was not.

Nothing about this was okay.

Victor continued speaking quietly.

“Sarah was young when Robert found out what was happening around her.”

“What was happening?”

“She had discovered information that could destroy powerful people.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

May you like

“What information?”

Victor shook his head.
