Chương 4

"Before you, there was a part of my life I was ashamed of."

He reached for the old photograph.

"The woman in this picture is Claire Morgan."

Emily watched carefully.

"She was someone I knew before we met."

"Not just someone," Daniel added.

"Someone who changed my life."

Emily's fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the table.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked away toward the window.

"When I was younger, I made choices because I thought I knew what mattered."

"I cared more about success, reputation, and proving myself than I cared about the people around me."

Claire had been part of that period of his life.

They had shared dreams, plans, and promises that eventually fell apart because Daniel had chosen ambition over everything else.

But there was more.

Much more.

"When things ended with Claire, I discovered something that changed everything," Daniel continued.

Emily waited.

"She was pregnant."

The room became completely still.

Emily stared at him.

For a moment, she wondered if she had heard correctly.

Daniel saw the shock on her face and continued before fear could make him stop.

"I found out before I met you."

Emily slowly leaned back in her chair.

The pain on her face was immediate.

"Did you have a child?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

The answer felt heavier than she expected.

Emily looked down at the table.

All the anger she had felt before suddenly mixed with a different emotion.

Confusion.

"Where is that child now?"

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Her name is Lily."

Emily looked up.

"Her?"

Daniel nodded.

"She is twenty years old now."

The silence that followed felt endless.

Emily looked toward the photographs on the wall.

Twenty years of marriage.

Twenty years of believing she knew every important part of Daniel's life.

And there had been an entire person she never knew existed.

"Why?" she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He had expected anger.

He had expected accusations.

But the quiet disappointment in her voice hurt him more.

"Because I was afraid," he admitted.

Emily shook her head.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it is the truth."

"No," she replied.

"It is the reason you gave yourself."

Daniel became silent.

Emily continued.

"You were afraid of what I would think."

"You were afraid I would see you differently."

"You were afraid of losing the life you built."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But you never thought about what it would feel like for me to discover it this way."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Every word reached him because he knew there was no defense.

"I should have told you before we got married."

"Yes," Emily said softly.

"You should have."

The honesty of her answer hurt more than anger.

Daniel looked at the papers.

"I wanted to tell you."

"Many times."

"When we were dating, I almost did."

"When we got engaged, I almost did."

"When we bought this house, I almost did."

"Every time, I convinced myself there would be a better moment."

Emily gave a small, painful laugh.

"There is never a better moment for a truth someone has been hiding."

Daniel nodded.

"I know that now."

She looked at him.

"And Claire?"

"What happened between you two?"

Daniel hesitated.

"After Lily was born, Claire and I tried to make things work."

"But we were already broken."

"We were two people trying to rebuild something that was never strong enough."

"So we decided to separate."

Emily studied his face.

"Did you stay in Lily's life?"

Daniel nodded immediately.

"Every day I could."

"She was the one person in my life I never wanted to disappoint."

Emily looked away.

The answer created another painful contradiction.

The man in front of her had hidden something enormous.

But he had also spent two decades being a father.

"Does Lily know about me?"

Daniel was silent.

That silence told her everything.

Emily's face changed.

"She doesn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Because I told myself I would introduce you when I was certain everything was stable."

Emily stood up slowly.

"You kept me hidden too?"

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Not like that."

"But you did."

Her voice remained quiet.

"You made decisions about my life without giving me the choice."

Daniel had no answer.

Because she was right.

Emily walked toward the window.

Outside, the rain had stopped, leaving the streets covered in reflections.

"I need to ask you something."

Daniel looked at her.

"Do you regret having Lily?"

His expression changed instantly.

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

"Never."

Emily nodded slowly.

"Do you regret hiding her?"

Daniel's eyes lowered.

"Every single day."

She turned back toward him.

"Then why did you keep doing it?"

Daniel struggled to speak.

"Because every year it became harder."

"At first, I was afraid you would leave."

"Then I was afraid Lily would feel rejected."

"Then I was afraid that telling the truth would destroy everything."

Emily walked back toward the table.

"And now?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Now I know the truth was already destroying everything."

For the first time, Emily saw something different in him.

Not just guilt.

Not just fear.

Acceptance.

He was finally facing the damage instead of trying to escape it.

Emily picked up the photograph of Lily.

She studied the young woman's face.

There was a strange feeling in her chest.

She was hurt by Daniel.

Deeply hurt.

But this young woman had done nothing wrong.

A person existed because of a secret.

A person who deserved honesty too.

"Does Lily know you told me?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then she deserves to know."

Daniel looked surprised.

Emily placed the photograph back on the table.

"I am angry with you."

"I don't know if I can forgive you."

"But she deserves better than another secret."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn't.

May you like

But because for the first time, Emily was thinking beyond the pain between them.

"I don't know what happens next," she said.
