Chương 7

Daniel looked at her sharply.

"You waited six years to tell her."

"I was protecting her."

"You were protecting a secret."

Evelyn looked hurt.

But before she could respond, a faint sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned toward the window.

The officers moved closer to the curtains.

Maya felt Lily move behind her.

The little girl sensed the fear spreading through the adults.

Daniel noticed and immediately lowered his voice.

"Maya."

She looked at him.

"Take Lily away from the window."

Something about the way he said it made her listen.

Not because he ordered her.

Because he sounded afraid.

She guided Lily toward the hallway.

The child looked back at Daniel.

"Are you coming?"

Daniel froze for a second.

The question affected him more than Maya expected.

"Yes."

His voice softened.

"I am."

Lily nodded and held Maya's hand tighter.

The officers quietly moved into position.

The entire house had changed in seconds.

The family room that had been filled with fear over custody was now filled with something much more dangerous.

A threat nobody could see.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

"You knew this could happen?"

Evelyn's eyes were full of regret.

"I knew there was a possibility."

"A possibility?"

Maya whispered.

"You let me raise her without knowing someone could come after her?"

Evelyn looked down.

"I thought distance would keep her invisible."

Maya shook her head.

"You didn't keep her invisible."

She looked toward Lily.

"You kept her alone."

The words hurt Evelyn.

But she did not argue.

Because she knew Maya was right.

Daniel quietly approached the hallway.

He stopped a few feet away from Maya.

"I am sorry."

Maya looked at him.

"For what?"

"For every year you thought you were alone."

His voice lowered.

"For every birthday she had without me."

Maya looked away.

She wanted to stay angry.

She needed to.

But seeing him standing there with regret in his eyes made everything more complicated.

A loud knock came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Not the police.

Not a neighbor.

A slow, deliberate knock.

Like whoever stood outside already knew they would be heard.

Lily jumped.

Maya immediately pulled her close.

Daniel's expression changed.

The officers looked at him.

"Do you know who that is?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The older officer asked.

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the door.

"Someone who believes Lily belongs to them."

Maya felt her stomach drop.

The younger officer reached for his radio.

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't open that door."

Nobody moved.

Another knock came.

Harder.

Maya whispered.

"What do they want?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The same thing everyone has wanted from me for years."

"What?"

"Control."

The word was barely audible.

The officers looked at each other.

Then the older one spoke.

"Mr. Whitmore, you need to give us the full situation."

Daniel nodded.

"Years ago, someone inside my company tried to destroy me."

He glanced at Lily.

"When they failed, they looked for something they could use against me."

Maya's face tightened.

"And they found her."

Daniel nodded.

The knock came again.

This time followed by a voice.

A man's voice.

"Maya Carter."

Everyone froze.

Maya felt every muscle in her body tighten.

She had never heard that voice before.

But hearing her name from outside her home felt terrifying.

Daniel stepped between the door and the family.

The man outside continued.

"We know you're in there."

Maya looked at Daniel.

"How do they know my name?"

Daniel did not answer.

Because she already knew.

They had found her.

The younger officer whispered into his radio.

"We need backup."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not enough time."

The older officer looked at him.

"Then tell us what we're dealing with."

Daniel stared at the door.

"We are dealing with people who don't threaten unless they are certain they can win."

The voice outside returned.

"Daniel."

A pause.

"Open the door."

Daniel's face became cold.

The powerful man from the headlines returned for a moment.

But Maya saw something underneath it.

Not anger.

Fear.

Fear for Lily.

She moved closer to him.

"Who is that?"

Daniel looked at her.

"His name is Victor Hale."

The name meant nothing to Maya.

But Evelyn reacted immediately.

Her face went pale.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"You know him?"

Evelyn's hands began to shake.

"I thought he was gone."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"He never left."

The house became silent.

Maya looked between them.

"Someone please tell me what is happening."

Evelyn whispered.

"Victor was the man who helped Daniel build his first company."

Daniel corrected her.

"He was the man who tried to take it from me."

The voice outside grew louder.

"Daniel, I know you are protecting her."

A pause.

"And I know the little girl is inside."

Maya pulled Lily closer.

The child buried her face against her mother.

Daniel looked at the door.

Then at Maya.

Then at Lily.

And in that moment, Maya saw the decision forming in his eyes.

He was no longer thinking like a businessman.

He was thinking like a father.

"I need you to trust me."

Maya looked at him.

She wanted to say no.

She wanted to tell him he was still a stranger.

But she looked at Lily.

And she saw the same fear in his eyes that she felt in her own.

Slowly, she nodded.

Daniel reached for the phone again.

But before he could call anyone, the lights in the house suddenly went out.

The room disappeared into darkness.

Lily screamed.

Maya grabbed her immediately.

Outside, the front door handle began to move.

Someone was trying to get inside.

The sound of the door handle turning stopped everyone’s breathing for a moment.

Maya held Lily against her chest and moved backward into the hallway.

The darkness made every sound feel closer.

Every movement felt dangerous.

Daniel stood near the entrance, his body positioned between the family and the front door.

May you like

The officers used the faint light from their phones to see.

The older officer whispered.
