Chương 4

The officer's voice became serious.

"Mrs. Carter, what exactly are you saying?"

Evelyn closed her eyes for a moment.

Then she opened them.

"I am saying Lily's father was not an ordinary man."

Maya felt a strange chill move through her.

She had heard stories.

Rumors.

Whispers from people who disappeared from conversations whenever she entered a room.

But she never connected any of them to herself.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"His name is Daniel Whitmore."

Maya froze.

The name meant nothing at first.

Then everything.

The business articles.

The photographs.

The headlines.

The man whose face appeared on television screens years ago.

A man surrounded by wealth, power, and secrets.

Maya looked down at Lily.

Her daughter had no idea her entire world had just shifted.

"Why would you hide this from me?"

Maya asked.

Evelyn looked devastated.

"Because I thought keeping you away from him would keep you safe."

Maya shook her head.

"You don't protect someone by stealing the truth from them."

Evelyn had no response.

Because she knew Maya was right.

The officers stood silently.

The accusation that brought them there no longer seemed like the real story.

The real story was buried much deeper.

Maya looked at the paper in Evelyn's hand.

"Is that proof?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"What kind of proof?"

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then at Maya.

"A DNA test."

Maya felt her grip loosen slightly.

Not because she trusted Evelyn.

But because she suddenly realized the danger was not standing inside the room.

The danger was everything waiting outside it.

And somewhere beyond that front door was a man who had just learned he had a daughter.

Maya stood frozen in the middle of the living room, holding Lily while the weight of the truth settled over her.

The name Daniel Whitmore repeated inside her mind like a sound from a distant memory.

She remembered seeing his face years ago on television screens in airports and restaurants.

She remembered magazines describing him as one of the youngest and most powerful businessmen in the country.

A man whose companies stretched across multiple states.

A man whose life seemed impossibly far away from hers.

And now Evelyn was telling her that man was Lily's father.

"No," Maya whispered.

The word was not denial anymore.

It was disbelief.

"That can't be true."

Evelyn looked at her with sadness.

"I wish it wasn't."

Maya looked down at Lily.

Her daughter was watching the adults carefully, trying to understand why everyone looked afraid.

Maya immediately softened her expression.

She brushed a strand of blonde hair away from Lily's face.

"Go sit on the sofa for a minute, sweetheart."

Lily hesitated.

"I want to stay with you."

Maya's heart broke.

She hugged her tighter.

"I know, baby."

She kissed the top of her head.

"But I need you to trust me."

Slowly, Lily moved to the sofa and sat down, still holding onto the edge of Maya's sleeve.

The officers watched quietly.

They had entered the house expecting one situation.

They were now standing inside another.

Maya turned back toward Evelyn.

"Start from the beginning."

Evelyn nodded.

She looked older than she had moments before.

Like carrying the secret out loud had taken away the last bit of strength she had used to hide it.

"Six years ago, you were involved in a car accident."

Maya's face tightened.

She remembered.

She remembered rain on the windshield.

The sound of breaking glass.

The hospital lights above her.

The doctors telling her she was lucky.

"But what you didn't know," Evelyn continued, "was that someone made sure Daniel never found you."

Maya stared at her.

"Someone?"

Evelyn looked down.

"His enemies."

The room became colder.

Maya felt a knot forming in her stomach.

"What enemies?"

Evelyn looked toward the officers.

"I don't know everything."

The older officer spoke carefully.

"Mrs. Carter, if there are safety concerns involving a child, we need the full information."

Evelyn nodded.

"Daniel built an empire, but he also made powerful people angry."

Maya crossed her arms protectively.

"And what does that have to do with Lily?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Everything."

Maya felt her anger returning.

"You knew this for six years?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Yes."

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

"You knew she had a father who wanted to know her."

Evelyn looked away.

"I knew he would come looking eventually."

Maya's voice became sharper.

"And you decided I didn't deserve to know?"

"No."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I decided Lily deserved a chance at a normal life."

Maya laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"Normal?"

She looked around the room.

"Does this feel normal to you?"

Nobody answered.

Maya wiped her eyes quickly.

She refused to cry in front of the woman who had kept this from her.

"You took away my choice."

Evelyn lowered her head.

"I know."

Those two words carried more regret than Maya expected.

But regret did not erase six years.

It did not erase birthdays without answers.

It did not erase nights when Lily asked why she did not have a father like other children.

It did not erase every moment Maya wondered if she had failed her daughter by raising her alone.

The younger officer stepped closer.

"Mrs. Carter, do you have any reason to believe Daniel Whitmore is a threat to Lily?"

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation immediately caught Maya's attention.

"Why did you stop?"

Evelyn looked nervous.

"Because the answer is complicated."

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"I need the truth."

Evelyn took a deep breath.

"Daniel himself is not the danger."

"Then who is?"

Evelyn looked toward the front window.

"The people around him."

Maya followed her gaze.

The neighborhood outside was quiet.

Porch lights glowed.

Cars sat in driveways.

Everything looked ordinary.

But suddenly she wondered how much danger could exist beyond a peaceful street.

The officer looked at the paper again.

"Does Daniel know about the DNA test?"

Evelyn nodded.

May you like

"He does now."

Maya felt her chest tighten.
