Chương 2

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"If there is something you think I did wrong, say it."

Her voice was stronger now.

"But you are not taking my daughter without the truth coming out."

For the first time, the room went completely silent.

The officers looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn's calm expression began to crack.

Not much.

Just enough for Maya to see that there was more behind this moment.

More than an accusation.

More than a simple family argument.

Maya held Lily tighter.

She knew this was only the beginning.

And whatever secret had brought the police to her door was about to change everything.

Maya held her daughter close as the silence stretched across the living room.

Evelyn's eyes moved toward the officers, and for a brief moment her confidence seemed to disappear.

One of the officers stepped closer, holding a small folder in his hand.

"Mrs. Carter, we need to review the information that was provided to us," he said.

Maya looked at the folder and felt a wave of fear move through her.

"What information?"

The officer hesitated.

He looked at Evelyn before answering.

"Claims were made regarding Lily's safety."

Maya stared at him.

The words felt impossible.

"Claims from who?"

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

Maya slowly lowered herself onto the edge of the sofa while keeping Lily in her arms.

Her daughter refused to let go.

The little girl's fingers remained locked around her mother's shoulder.

Evelyn finally spoke.

"I did what I had to do."

Maya looked up at her.

"You called the police on me?"

"I called people who could protect Lily."

Maya shook her head slowly.

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"You called people because you wanted control."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"You have always misunderstood what responsibility means."

Maya felt anger rising beneath her fear.

For years, she had tried to keep peace in the family.

She had ignored comments.

She had forgiven judgment.

She had stayed silent when Evelyn criticized every decision she made as a mother.

But this was different.

This was her daughter.

"You don't get to decide what is best for her anymore," Maya said.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"You think love is enough?"

Maya looked at Lily.

Then she looked back.

"Yes."

Her answer came immediately.

"Because she knows I love her."

The room became still again.

The officers watched the exchange carefully.

Lily slowly lifted her head from Maya's shoulder.

"Mama, did I do something wrong?"

The question broke Maya's heart.

She touched her daughter's cheek gently.

"No, sweetheart."

Her voice softened.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

Evelyn looked away for the first time.

Maya noticed.

She noticed because she had spent years learning every expression on Evelyn's face.

She knew when the woman was angry.

She knew when she was disappointed.

And now she knew when she was hiding something.

"Why are you really here?" Maya asked.

Evelyn remained quiet.

"Why tonight?"

The older woman did not answer.

Maya looked at the officers.

"Why did you come here without speaking to me first?"

The younger officer exchanged a glance with his partner.

"We received an urgent report."

"From her?"

The officer did not respond.

Maya understood.

The report came from Evelyn.

The suitcase near the doorway suddenly felt heavier than before.

It was not just a suitcase.

It represented someone trying to remove her from her own home.

Someone trying to decide her future.

Maya stood again, slowly and carefully.

She kept one arm around Lily.

"Tell me what you think happened."

The officer opened the folder.

"There were concerns about the living conditions here."

Maya looked around the room.

The same room where Lily's drawings covered the refrigerator.

The same room where bedtime stories were read every night.

The same room where she had spent countless hours making sure her daughter felt safe.

"Look around," Maya said.

"Does this look unsafe to you?"

The officer looked around.

His expression changed slightly.

He saw the toys.

The clean room.

The family photos.

The child's books stacked neatly near the sofa.

But Evelyn spoke before he could answer.

"You don't know what happens when nobody is watching."

Maya turned toward her.

"And you do?"

Evelyn's lips tightened.

"I know enough."

The sentence hung in the air.

Maya felt a cold feeling in her chest.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn looked toward Lily.

Then back at Maya.

"It means I know you are not telling the whole truth."

Maya's face changed.

She was no longer just afraid.

She was confused.

"What truth?"

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The officers looked at Evelyn again.

This time their expressions showed uncertainty.

Maya saw it clearly.

They did not know everything either.

They had come because of a story someone else had told them.

A story that might not be complete.

Lily whispered into Maya's ear.

"I want to go to my room."

Maya immediately nodded.

"Okay, baby."

She carried Lily a few steps toward the hallway.

But one officer gently raised a hand.

"Mrs. Carter, please wait."

Maya stopped.

The frustration in her eyes returned.

"She is scared."

"We understand."

"No, you don't."

Her voice remained controlled, but every word carried emotion.

"You walked into her home with strangers."

The officer lowered his hand.

He had no argument.

Lily looked between the adults.

Her small face showed confusion beyond her years.

Maya turned slightly away from everyone.

She whispered softly to her daughter.

"Everything is going to be okay."

But even as she said the words, she knew something was wrong.

The entire situation felt planned.

The timing.

The accusation.

The police arriving at the exact moment Evelyn was there.

Someone wanted this confrontation.

Someone wanted Maya to lose control.

But she refused.

She took a slow breath and faced the room again.

"If there is evidence, show me."

Evelyn looked surprised by the confidence in Maya's voice.

"You really want to see everything?"

"Yes."

May you like

The older woman reached into her bag.

For a second, Maya wondered what she would pull out.
