Chương 6
The pain in his voice sounded real.
"I was told you left after the accident."
Maya shook her head.
"I never left."
"I know that now."
Daniel glanced toward Evelyn.
A painful silence passed between them.
"You knew."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"I was trying to keep them safe."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"By keeping my daughter from me?"
Maya looked between them.
The anger between Daniel and Evelyn was old.
Older than tonight.
Older than the police.
Older than the accusation.
"What happened?" Maya asked.
Neither answered immediately.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"Six years ago, someone inside my company leaked information that put my family at risk."
Maya frowned.
"Your family?"
Daniel looked at Lily.
"Before I knew about her."
The words were difficult for him.
"After the accident, I was told you had died."
Maya felt a chill.
"I was in the hospital."
"I know."
Daniel looked at her.
"That was the first thing I learned when I reopened the investigation."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"Investigation?"
Daniel nodded.
"I spent years trying to find out what happened."
"Why didn't you find me?"
His silence answered before he did.
"Because someone made sure every path led somewhere else."
Maya looked at Evelyn.
The older woman looked away.
A painful realization formed.
Evelyn had not just hidden information.
She had been part of something much bigger.
"Did you know I was alive?" Maya asked.
Evelyn's eyes filled with regret.
"Not at first."
Maya waited.
"After the accident, I found out."
The room became silent.
"You found out?"
Evelyn nodded.
"I discovered the truth months later."
Maya felt betrayed all over again.
"And you still said nothing."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I thought if Daniel found you, the people after him would find you too."
Daniel stepped forward slightly.
"And she was right about one thing."
Everyone looked at him.
Maya stared.
"You are saying she was right?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"The threat was real."
Maya looked at Lily.
The little girl was still watching everything.
Confused.
Scared.
Trying to understand adult problems she should never have had to carry.
Daniel noticed.
His expression changed immediately.
He lowered himself slowly so he was closer to Lily's height.
"I know this is confusing."
Lily said nothing.
"I know you don't know me."
She looked at him carefully.
"But I have known about you for three days."
Her small voice finally came.
"Are you my daddy?"
The question destroyed every person in the room.
Daniel's eyes became wet.
He nodded.
"Yes."
Lily looked at Maya.
Then back at him.
"Why didn't you come before?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Because I didn't know where you were."
The answer was simple.
Honest.
And somehow more painful.
Lily looked down.
Maya watched the two of them.
She expected anger.
She expected rejection.
Instead, she saw a little girl trying to understand a missing piece of her life.
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
Slowly, carefully.
Maya immediately tensed.
But he only removed a small photograph.
He held it out.
"I had this for years."
Maya did not move.
Daniel looked at the picture.
"It was the only thing I had left from before everything changed."
Maya stepped closer.
She saw the photograph.
It was an old picture of her.
A younger version of herself.
Before the accident.
Before the fear.
Before secrets.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You kept that?"
Daniel nodded.
"Every day."
For the first time that night, Maya saw something beyond power and wealth.
She saw a man who had lost years he could never get back.
But she also knew something important.
Pain did not erase choices.
And forgiveness was not automatic.
She looked at Daniel.
"Even if you are her father..."
She paused.
"That doesn't mean you get to walk in and decide everything."
Daniel nodded immediately.
"I know."
Maya looked surprised.
"I don't want to take her from you."
His voice became firm.
"I want to know her."
The room went quiet.
Outside, the SUV waited in the darkness.
Inside, two parents stood facing each other for the first time.
One had spent six years protecting a child alone.
The other had spent six years searching for a daughter he never knew existed.
And between them stood Lily.
The little girl who connected two completely different worlds.
But before anyone could say more, Daniel's phone began to ring.
He looked at the screen.
The color disappeared from his face.
Maya noticed.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
Then back at Lily.
His voice became low.
"They found us."
The words hung in the room like a warning.
"They found us."
Maya looked at Daniel's face and immediately understood that this was not a simple phone call.
Whatever fear she had seen in him before was different now.
This was the fear of someone who knew exactly what was coming.
The officers reacted instantly.
The older officer stepped toward Daniel.
"Who found you?"
Daniel ended the call without answering.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he walked quickly toward the front door and closed it.
The soft click of the lock sounded louder than it should have.
Maya tightened her grip around Lily's hand.
"What is happening?"
Daniel looked at her.
His expression was serious, but his voice remained calm.
"I need you to listen carefully."
Maya shook her head.
"No."
Her eyes moved between him and Evelyn.
"I have been listening to everyone else tell me what to do all night."
She pointed toward Lily.
"The only person I care about is her."
Daniel nodded.
"You're right."
That answer surprised her.
He looked toward the officers.
"I am not here to take control."
He looked back at Maya.
"But I need you to understand that if they know about Lily, this house is no longer safe."
Maya felt a cold feeling move through her.
"Who are they?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
"The people responsible for keeping me away from you."
The room became tense again.
May you like
Evelyn stepped forward.
"I told you this would happen."
