Chương 3

A document.

A photograph.

A message.

Something that could explain why her entire world had suddenly turned upside down.

Evelyn removed a folded piece of paper and held it tightly.

The officers watched closely.

Maya tightened her hold on Lily.

She felt her daughter's heartbeat against her chest.

Then Evelyn took one step forward.

"I hoped it would never come to this."

Maya stared at the paper.

"What is that?"

Evelyn looked directly into her eyes.

"It is the reason I came here tonight."

The room fell silent.

And for the first time since the door opened, Maya realized this was not about taking Lily away.

It was about a secret someone had been protecting for a very long time.

Maya stared at the folded paper in Evelyn's hand, unable to move.

The entire room seemed to shrink around her.

The warm lights above the living room suddenly felt too bright.

The familiar walls that had always surrounded her with comfort now felt like they were holding their breath.

"What is that?" Maya asked again.

Evelyn looked down at the paper for a moment before answering.

"It is something you should have known years ago."

Maya's expression changed.

Years ago.

Those words stayed in her mind.

She glanced at Lily, who was still holding onto her tightly.

"Please don't do this in front of her."

Evelyn's face softened slightly, but only for a second.

"I didn't want it to happen this way."

"Then why did you bring police officers into my house?"

Evelyn looked away.

Because she had no answer.

The officers remained near the doorway, no longer looking like people who had come to remove a child.

They looked like people who had realized they had walked into a situation far more complicated than they expected.

One officer carefully spoke.

"Mrs. Carter, perhaps we should all slow down."

Maya looked at him.

"Slow down?"

Her voice shook.

"My daughter thinks she is being taken away from me."

The officer lowered his eyes.

He understood.

He had seen fear before.

But this was different.

This was not the fear of someone hiding something.

This was the fear of a mother who believed someone was trying to take away the only person who mattered most.

Evelyn slowly unfolded the paper.

Maya watched every movement.

The older woman's hands were steady, but her eyes were not.

There was something hidden behind her controlled expression.

Something painful.

"This is a medical report," Evelyn said.

Maya frowned.

"A medical report?"

She looked confused.

"Whose?"

Evelyn looked directly at Lily.

Maya immediately moved in front of her daughter.

"No."

Her voice became firm.

"Whatever this is, you do not involve her."

Evelyn took a breath.

"That is exactly what I am trying to do."

Maya felt her anger rising.

"By terrifying her?"

"No."

Evelyn's voice cracked slightly.

"By protecting her."

The room went silent.

Maya studied her carefully.

For the first time that night, Evelyn did not look powerful.

She looked like someone carrying a burden too heavy to hold.

"What are you talking about?"

Evelyn looked at the officers.

"I think you should hear this too."

The older officer stepped closer.

"Go ahead."

Evelyn looked back at Maya.

"Six years ago, before Lily was born, there was an incident."

Maya's face tightened.

She knew that sentence.

She knew there was something coming.

Something connected to a time in her life she rarely talked about.

"I don't understand."

Evelyn swallowed.

"You told everyone Lily's father left before she was born."

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"Because he did."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

The word was quiet.

But it hit Maya harder than a shout.

"No?"

Maya repeated.

"What do you mean no?"

Evelyn held the paper tighter.

"I mean you were lied to."

Maya felt the air leave her lungs.

She looked at Lily.

Then back at Evelyn.

"Who lied to me?"

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

The silence was enough.

Maya's expression slowly changed.

She stepped backward.

"No."

Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.

"Maya."

"No."

Maya shook her head.

"You don't get to walk into my home and rewrite my life."

"I am not rewriting anything."

"Then explain."

Evelyn looked toward the officers.

"I need to explain everything."

The younger officer moved slightly closer, listening carefully.

Evelyn continued.

"Six years ago, Maya was told that Lily's father disappeared after an accident."

Maya's breathing became uneven.

She remembered that night.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The endless questions.

The empty chair beside her bed.

The promise that she would raise her child alone if she had to.

She had spent years believing she knew the truth.

"You were told he was gone," Evelyn said.

"But he wasn't."

Maya's fingers tightened around Lily.

The little girl looked up at her mother, sensing the change in the room.

"Who is he?"

Maya whispered.

Evelyn looked at her.

"Someone who has been searching for you."

Maya froze.

The officers exchanged a glance.

"Who?" the officer asked.

Evelyn looked toward the front door.

Then toward the dark window behind them.

"Someone who never knew Lily existed."

Maya felt dizzy.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

Evelyn's face became filled with regret.

"Because he found out."

A cold silence filled the room.

Maya stared at her.

"Who found out?"

Evelyn looked down.

"Your daughter."

Maya's heart stopped.

"What?"

Evelyn stepped forward carefully.

"He knows about Lily."

Maya immediately pulled Lily closer.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"No one is taking her."

Evelyn shook her head.

"You still don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

Evelyn looked at the child.

"He isn't trying to take her."

Maya waited.

"He is trying to protect her."

Maya felt anger and fear collide inside her.

"Protect her from what?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

From the beginning, she had looked stern.

Unmoved.

Certain.

But now, for the first time, she looked afraid.

"From the people who have been looking for her."

Maya stared at her.

"What people?"

May you like

Evelyn looked at the officers.

"I should have told Maya everything years ago."
