Chương 7

Someone who had asked about the baby.
Someone who had acted like he cared.
The betrayal felt impossible to understand.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
His expression became serious.
"Where is he now?"
Claire answered quietly.
"We don't know."
Emily looked around.
The fear she felt was different now.
Before, she feared being forgotten.
Now, she feared what the truth would bring.
Daniel noticed.
He moved closer but stopped again.
"Emily."
She looked at him.
"I promise you one thing."
She waited.
"I won't make decisions for you anymore."
Her eyes softened slightly.
"I won't hide anything from you."
The promise was simple.
But after everything, simple honesty meant more than dramatic words.
Emily looked at the man she once loved.
The man who hurt her.
The man who had come back carrying the truth.
"I need time," she said.
Daniel nodded.
"You have it."
She looked down at the papers.
The road ahead was still uncertain.
Her family was broken.
Her trust had been damaged.
The person responsible was still somewhere out there.
But for the first time in months, Emily felt something she had almost forgotten.
Control.
She was no longer waiting for people to tell her what happened.
She was finally choosing to discover it herself.
Outside the garage, the snow continued falling.
The witnesses slowly moved closer, realizing the confrontation had changed into something else.
It was no longer about accusations.
It was about facing the truth.
Emily closed the folder.
"Then we find him."
Daniel looked at her.
"We do it together."
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she nodded once.
"Together."
And for the first time since everything fell apart, they stood on the same side of the truth.
The search for the person in the photograph began before the snow stopped falling.
Daniel contacted the necessary people while Claire organized the documents and Michael remained in the garage, facing the consequences of the secrets he had kept.
Emily watched everything quietly from a chair near the entrance.
For the first time in months, people were moving because of her choices instead of making choices for her.
That difference changed the way she saw the entire situation.
She was still hurt.
She was still angry.
But she was no longer powerless.
Daniel noticed the way she looked at the papers again and again.
"You should rest," he said softly.
Emily looked at him.
"I've been resting while everyone else controlled the truth."
Daniel accepted the criticism.
"I know."
She looked down.
"I don't want to spend another day not knowing what is happening around me."
Daniel nodded.
"Then you won't."
The promise was not dramatic.
It was not a desperate attempt to earn forgiveness.
It was simply a commitment to honesty.
Emily appreciated that more than she expected.
Claire approached with another folder.
"There is something else you need to see."
Emily looked at her.
"More?"
Claire gave a sad smile.
"I wish there wasn't."
She placed the folder on the table.
Inside were old messages, financial records, and photographs.
Emily looked through them carefully.
The deeper she went, the more complicated the story became.
The person responsible had not acted alone.
There had been planning.
There had been manipulation.
There had been people who believed they could control the outcome.
But one detail continued to bother her.
A missing piece.
A question that refused to disappear.
"Why did they stop?" Emily asked.
Daniel looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"If they wanted to hurt you through me, why did everything suddenly end after the accident?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Emily looked around.
She could see the same realization forming on their faces.
Something did not make sense.
Claire opened another document.
"There was a reason."
She pointed to a section near the bottom.
Emily leaned closer.
A name appeared.
A name connected to a person who had disappeared shortly after the accident.
"Who is this?" Emily asked.
Michael looked at the page.
His expression changed.
"I know that name."
Daniel turned toward him.
"How?"
Michael hesitated.
"I saw it in the investigation."
Emily looked at him.
"And you never mentioned it?"
Michael looked ashamed.
"I didn't understand its importance."
Emily sighed.
The frustration was obvious.
Everyone seemed to have pieces of the truth, but nobody had brought them together.
Daniel looked at Michael.
"What do you know?"
Michael stared at the document.
"This person was supposed to meet someone the night of the accident."
"Who?" Daniel asked.
Michael looked toward Emily.
"Your father."
The words hit her again.
She had hoped there would be a point where the surprises ended.
But the past kept opening new doors.
Emily stood slowly.
"I need to talk to my father."
Claire looked at her carefully.
"Emily."
"No."
Her voice was firm.
"I need answers from him directly."
Daniel watched her.
Emily looked at him.
For a moment, she almost refused.
Then she remembered what he had promised.
No decisions for her.
No hiding things.
Just standing beside her.
"Okay," she said.
The answer was quiet.
But Daniel understood its importance.
It was not forgiveness.
It was trust beginning to rebuild.
Before they could leave, Michael stepped forward.
"There is something I need to tell you."
Emily stopped.
She looked tired.
"Another secret?"
Michael nodded slowly.
"Yes."
She closed her eyes briefly.
"Go ahead."
Michael took a deep breath.
"The night of the accident, I was the one who called Daniel."
Daniel looked surprised.
"What?"
Michael looked at him.
"I found out you were investigating the wrong person."
Daniel stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me everything?"
"Because I was afraid."
Emily looked at him.
"Everyone was afraid."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
His voice became lower.
"But I made a choice that hurt you."
The honesty was painful.
But it was what Emily had wanted from the beginning.
The truth without excuses.
"What did you find out?" Daniel asked.
May you like
Michael looked at the documents.
"The person who planned everything knew Daniel would eventually uncover the truth."
