Chương 3

Daniel immediately reached toward his jacket, but he stopped himself.
He remembered she needed space.
That small act did not erase the past, but Emily noticed it.
She noticed every small thing now.
Every movement.
Every hesitation.
Every choice.
Because trust was no longer something she could give without thinking.
"What happened that night?" Emily finally asked.
Daniel looked at her.
"The full truth."
She nodded slowly.
"I need to hear it."
Daniel glanced at the witnesses.
Some of them looked uncomfortable.
Others looked afraid.
Emily followed his gaze.
"Everyone stays."
The neighbors became still.
Daniel understood.
She was done being kept away from the truth.
He moved slightly closer but remained at a respectful distance.
"The night you were hurt, I received information that someone was trying to use your situation against me."
Emily frowned.
"Against you?"
Daniel nodded.
"My work had put me in contact with people who wanted information I refused to give them."
The explanation sounded impossible.
Emily waited.
"I thought they were targeting me."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"But then I realized they knew about you."
A painful silence followed.
Emily placed one hand over her stomach.
"They knew about the baby?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Her face changed.
Fear replaced confusion.
"Why?"
"Because they knew you were the one person who could make me stop."
Emily looked at him.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"They knew I would risk everything for you."
Emily looked away.
She did not know whether the words comforted her or hurt her.
She wanted to believe she mattered.
But she also remembered how alone she had felt.
"Who were they?" she asked.
Daniel looked at the papers.
"The people behind it were not strangers."
That answer made her heart sink.
"Someone close."
Daniel nodded.
Emily closed her eyes.
She already knew what he was going to say.
The truth had been standing near her all along.
"The person who attacked you was not acting alone."
Daniel paused.
"He was being guided."
Emily opened her eyes.
"By who?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"By someone who knew your life."
The words felt like a warning.
A movement came from behind the SUV.
One of the witnesses suddenly looked away.
Emily noticed.
So did Daniel.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
Daniel's posture became more alert.
But he did not move aggressively.
He simply watched.
Emily followed his eyes.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
The silence itself became an answer.
Daniel stepped slightly in front of Emily, not touching her, but positioning himself between her and the uncertainty outside.
Emily noticed the instinctive movement.
Months ago, she might have seen it as control.
Now she saw the fear behind it.
Daniel was not trying to command the situation.
He was trying to prevent her from being hurt again.
A figure slowly appeared near the edge of the driveway.
Emily recognized him immediately.
Her face lost all color.
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"Emily, listen to me."
She stared at the person approaching.
The same person who had promised to help her.
The same person who had told her Daniel was never coming back.
The same person whose name was written in those documents.
The man stopped a few feet away from the garage.
The witnesses moved away nervously.
Emily felt her entire body become tense.
She held the papers tighter.
"You knew," she said.
The man tried to speak.
"Emily, I can explain."
She shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was quiet but powerful.
"You already explained everything when you decided to lie."
Daniel remained beside her.
For the first time in months, Emily was not standing alone.
The truth had finally arrived.
And this time, nobody could take it away from her.
The truth had finally arrived.
The man standing at the edge of the driveway was Michael Reed, the person Emily once believed was one of the few people she could trust.
He looked different now.
The confidence he carried before was gone, replaced by nervous movements and a face that showed he knew the moment he had feared had come.
Snow continued falling lightly around him, covering the driveway where so many memories had been created.
Emily stared at him without blinking.
She remembered every conversation.
Every promise.
Every time he told her that Daniel had abandoned her.
Every time he said he was only trying to help.
"I can explain," Michael repeated.
Emily tightened her grip on the papers.
"I don't want another explanation."
Her voice was calm, but the pain underneath it was impossible to hide.
"I want the truth."
Michael looked at Daniel.
For a brief moment, anger crossed his face.
"You brought him here?"
Emily looked confused.
Daniel immediately noticed the accusation hidden in those words.
"He came because she deserved to know what happened," Daniel said.
Michael shook his head.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Emily looked between them.
The fear in Michael's expression told her more than his words.
She had spent months searching for the missing pieces.
Now they were standing directly in front of her.
"Then tell me," Emily said.
Michael remained silent.
"Tell me why your name is in those documents."
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Emily saw it.
She saw the moment he realized there was no way to hide anymore.
"Those papers don't show the whole story," he finally said.
Daniel stepped forward.
"They show enough."
Michael looked at him with resentment.
"You think you are the hero now?"
Daniel did not react.
"No."
His answer surprised everyone.
"I think I made mistakes."
Emily looked at him.
"But I know she deserves the truth."
The honesty in Daniel's voice made the moment even heavier.
Michael looked back at Emily.
"I was trying to protect you."
Emily almost laughed.
The words sounded painfully familiar.
"Everyone says that."
Her eyes filled with frustration.
"Everyone says they were protecting me while they made decisions behind my back."
Michael lowered his head.
"I didn't want you involved."
May you like
Emily took a slow breath.
"You didn't want me involved, or you didn't want me to know?"
