Chương 2

"You left me alone because you were investigating something?"
Daniel nodded.
"I thought I could solve it before it reached you."
She gave a painful laugh.
"You don't understand."
Daniel looked at her silently.
"I needed you beside me, not somewhere far away trying to be a hero."
The honesty of her words hit him harder than any accusation.
He lowered his head.
"I know."
For the first time since arriving, Daniel looked completely defeated.
Not weak, but someone finally accepting the damage his choices had caused.
Emily watched him carefully.
Part of her wanted to turn away.
Part of her wanted answers.
The conflict inside her was visible in every expression.
Behind Daniel, the witnesses remained silent.
Even they could feel that this moment was not about forgiveness yet.
It was about revealing what had been hidden.
Daniel finally extended the envelope toward her.
Emily did not take it immediately.
She looked at the papers inside without touching them.
"What happens if I read those?"
Daniel answered honestly.
"Everything changes."
The wind moved through the garage again.
Emily looked at the man who had broken her trust and the child she was protecting.
She knew the truth could bring pain.
She also knew living with unanswered questions had already caused enough pain.
Slowly, she reached forward and took the envelope from his hand.
Daniel stepped back immediately, giving her the space she needed.
She opened it with trembling fingers.
The first page contained information she never expected to see.
Her expression changed as she read.
The anger in her eyes slowly mixed with disbelief.
Daniel watched silently, knowing this was the moment he had feared.
Emily looked up at him.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Because the people who knew the truth wanted you to believe you were alone."
Emily looked around at the faces watching from the driveway.
Suddenly, the entire past felt different.
The unanswered calls.
The missing details.
The strange behavior of people she trusted.
Everything seemed connected.
Daniel took a small step forward but stopped before crossing the distance between them.
"I came back because you deserved someone who stood beside you."
Emily held the papers tightly.
She was not ready to forgive him.
She was not ready to forget what happened.
But for the first time in months, she felt like she was no longer fighting alone.
The winter morning remained silent as the truth finally began to emerge.
Emily kept staring at the papers, her fingers shaking as she turned each page carefully.
The documents were filled with dates, names, and records that connected pieces of a story she had never been allowed to see.
Every line revealed another detail that made her question everything she thought she understood.
Daniel remained several feet away, refusing to interrupt her as she absorbed the information.
The garage felt smaller with every passing second.
The cold air outside mixed with the warmth of old memories inside the place where so many arguments and promises had once happened.
Emily reached the final page and stopped.
Her eyes moved across the words again and again before she finally looked up.
"His name is on here," she said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Emily's face tightened.
"Why?"
Daniel looked toward the floor before answering.
"Because he was there that night."
The witnesses exchanged shocked glances.
Nobody expected the answer to be so direct.
Emily looked back at the papers.
The name belonged to someone she had trusted.
Someone who had comforted her when Daniel disappeared.
Someone who had told her that everything would eventually become easier.
Her breathing became heavier as memories rushed through her mind.
"No," she whispered.
Daniel watched the pain return to her expression.
"I know it's hard to accept."
Emily shook her head.
"You don't understand."
Her voice became stronger.
"You don't understand because I defended him."
Daniel stayed silent.
She looked at the papers again.
"I told people they were wrong about him."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I told everyone he was helping me."
Daniel lowered his gaze.
"I know."
Emily stepped back slightly.
The betrayal felt different from the pain she had already experienced.
The pain from losing Daniel had been expected.
The pain from discovering that someone close to her had hidden the truth felt impossible.
"How long did you know?" she asked.
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation told her more than any answer could.
"Daniel."
His eyes met hers.
"Three weeks."
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
"Three weeks?"
"I needed proof."
"You needed proof while I was living with the consequences?"
Daniel looked away.
"I thought I was keeping you safe."
Emily wiped away a tear before it could fall.
"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."
Her voice trembled.
"But nobody ever asked me what I needed."
That sentence silenced the entire garage.
Daniel took a slow breath.
He knew she was right.
For months, every person around Emily had made decisions for her.
They had chosen what she should know.
They had chosen what she could handle.
They had chosen when she deserved the truth.
And every choice had left her feeling more alone.
"I was wrong," Daniel said.
Emily looked at him.
"I should have trusted you with the truth from the beginning."
The honesty surprised her because she expected another excuse.
Instead, she saw regret.
Real regret.
Daniel continued.
"I thought if I came back with answers, maybe I could fix everything."
Emily gave a quiet, painful laugh.
"You can't fix everything."
"I know."
"You can't erase those nights."
"I know."
"You can't make me forget that I needed you and you weren't there."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know."
The repeated words carried more weight than an argument could.
Emily looked away because seeing his pain made everything harder.
She wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
Anger was simple.
May you like
Forgiveness was complicated.
A gust of wind moved through the garage entrance, causing the papers in her hands to shake.
