Chương 5

Emily looked between them.
"Someone needs to start explaining."
Claire nodded slowly.
"You're right."
She walked closer but stopped near the entrance of the garage.
She did not try to step into Emily's space.
That small gesture made Emily listen more carefully.
"I knew Daniel before everything happened," Claire said.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"How?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"She was part of the investigation."
Emily's expression changed.
"An investigation you never told me about."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know."
The disappointment in Emily's face returned.
Claire noticed.
"He wanted to tell you."
Emily looked at her.
"But he didn't."
Claire accepted the truth.
"No, he didn't."
Daniel did not defend himself.
He knew he had already explained enough.
Claire opened the folder.
"What happened to you was connected to something much bigger than any of us understood."
Emily looked at the folder.
"What is in there?"
Claire looked at Michael.
"Proof."
Michael's face became tense.
"Claire, don't do this."
Claire turned toward him.
"You had months to tell her."
Michael said nothing.
"You had months to admit what you knew."
Emily looked at Michael again.
The anger she felt was mixed with confusion.
"You knew she had proof?"
Michael remained quiet.
That silence answered everything.
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
"How many people knew?"
Nobody answered immediately.
The hesitation was painful.
Daniel finally spoke.
"Too many."
Emily closed her eyes for a moment.
She felt overwhelmed by the number of secrets surrounding her life.
Everyone seemed to know pieces of the truth except her.
Claire noticed the pain on her face.
"Emily, I am sorry."
Emily looked at her.
"I don't need more apologies."
Her voice was tired.
"I need someone to stop deciding what I can handle."
Claire nodded.
"You're right."
The simple agreement surprised Emily.
There was no excuse.
No attempt to defend the past.
Just acceptance.
Claire opened the folder and removed several photographs.
She placed them on the table inside the garage.
Emily slowly approached.
Daniel remained behind her.
Not beside her.
Not in front of her.
Behind her.
Giving her the choice.
Emily noticed.
The photographs showed places she recognized.
The street near her old apartment.
The parking lot outside the hospital.
The area where the accident happened.
Her hands started shaking.
"Why do you have these?"
Claire looked at the images.
"Because someone was watching you before the accident."
Emily looked up.
"Who?"
Claire glanced at Michael.
Michael looked away.
Emily's heart sank.
"You."
Michael immediately shook his head.
"No."
Claire interrupted.
"Not him alone."
The words created a new silence.
Emily looked confused.
"Then who?"
Claire took a breath.
"The person who arranged everything."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Claire."
She looked at him.
"It's time."
Daniel knew what she meant.
He nodded.
Emily looked at both of them.
"Time for what?"
Claire placed another document on the table.
"This."
Emily read the first line.
Her face changed.
She recognized the name.
The person connected to the document was someone from her own family.
Someone she never imagined could be involved.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Claire watched her carefully.
"I wish I was wrong."
Emily shook her head.
"That is impossible."
Daniel looked at her.
"Emily."
She looked at him with fear in her eyes.
"Don't."
She took a step back.
"Don't tell me everyone I trusted was lying."
Daniel's expression softened.
"I wish I could."
The truth hurt more because it was no longer a single betrayal.
It was an entire chain of decisions made around her.
Claire looked at Emily.
"The person behind this wanted Daniel removed from your life."
"Why?"
Claire answered carefully.
"Because Daniel was the only person who would keep searching."
Emily looked at Daniel.
For the first time, she understood something she had not considered.
His disappearance had not been simple abandonment.
It had been connected to a dangerous situation.
But that did not erase the pain he caused.
Two truths could exist at the same time.
He had tried to protect her.
And he had still broken her trust.
Daniel seemed to understand that.
"I know what I did was wrong."
Emily looked away.
"I know."
The words were quiet.
"But knowing why doesn't make it hurt less."
Daniel nodded.
"I understand."
Michael finally spoke.
"Emily, there is something else."
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
Emily stared at him.
"What else?"
Michael swallowed.
"The night you were hurt, I wasn't there by accident."
Emily froze.
"What does that mean?"
Michael looked at the ground.
"I was following someone."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Michael looked toward the papers.
"Your father."
The garage became completely silent.
Emily stopped breathing for a second.
Her father had been gone from her life for years.
She had believed that part of her past was finished.
"What are you saying?"
Michael looked at her with regret.
"I'm saying he knew more than he ever admitted."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
Michael continued.
"He knew about the threats."
Daniel looked shocked.
"He knew?"
Michael nodded.
"And he made a deal to keep his own name away from it."
Emily felt tears fill her eyes.
Every answer seemed to open another wound.
She looked at the people around her.
People who had known fragments.
People who had made choices.
People who had allowed her to suffer without knowing why.
"Why did nobody tell me?"
Her voice broke.
Claire stepped forward slightly.
"Because everyone thought they were protecting you."
Emily looked at her.
"And they were wrong."
Nobody argued.
Because they knew she was right.
The winter wind moved through the garage as the truth settled over everyone.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
This time, she did not immediately look away.
She saw the regret.
She saw the person he had been before everything fell apart.
But she also remembered the nights she cried alone.
The trust he had broken.
May you like
The promises that disappeared.
"I don't know if I can forgive you," she said.
