Chương 4

The question struck him.

He had no immediate answer.

Daniel watched quietly.

He knew this conversation belonged to Emily.

She had spent too long without control over her own life.

Now she needed to take it back.

Michael looked toward the neighbors watching from behind the SUV.

"Can we talk somewhere private?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

The firmness in her voice surprised him.

"No more private conversations where nobody can verify what happened."

The witnesses stood silently.

They understood the meaning behind her words.

Emily was done being isolated.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"Emily, please."

She stared at him.

"Please what?"

Her voice cracked slightly.

"Please let you explain another lie?"

Michael stepped forward.

Daniel immediately moved his arm slightly, creating distance without threatening him.

Emily noticed the gesture.

She also noticed Daniel stopped himself from saying anything.

He trusted her to handle it.

That mattered.

Michael saw the movement and frowned.

"You really believe him again?"

Emily looked at Daniel for a moment.

Then she looked back at Michael.

"I don't know what I believe yet."

Her answer was honest.

"But I know what I saw."

Michael said nothing.

"I know who stayed."

The words hit Daniel harder than she realized.

He knew he had not been there when she needed him.

But he also knew he had to accept the consequences of that.

Emily looked at Michael.

"And I know who lied."

Michael's expression hardened.

"You're making a mistake."

Daniel finally spoke.

"No."

His voice remained controlled.

"She is making a choice."

The winter wind grew stronger.

The garage lights flickered slightly above them.

The entire scene felt frozen in time.

Emily looked down at the documents again.

There was one detail she had not fully understood.

A date.

A location.

A signature.

Something about it bothered her.

She turned one page back.

Then another.

Her eyes widened.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

Emily pointed at the document.

"This date."

Daniel stepped closer but stopped at the same distance.

"What about it?"

"This was two days before the accident."

Michael's face changed.

Emily looked directly at him.

"You knew something was going to happen."

Michael quickly shook his head.

"No."

But his answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

So did Emily.

"You knew," she repeated.

Michael looked desperate.

"No, I knew there was a problem."

"What problem?"

He hesitated.

Emily waited.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Michael spoke.

"Someone was planning to scare Daniel."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Scare me?"

Michael nodded.

"I thought it would end there."

Emily stared at him.

"You thought someone hurting me would just be a warning?"

Michael looked away.

"I didn't think they would actually do anything."

The sentence destroyed whatever defense he had left.

Emily's face showed disbelief.

She placed a hand over her mouth.

Daniel looked furious but controlled himself.

"You knew she was in danger."

Michael looked at him.

"I was trying to stop it."

Daniel's voice became colder.

"You failed."

Michael lowered his eyes.

The accusation was true.

Emily felt tears moving down her face.

She hated that she was crying.

She hated that after everything, she still felt pain for people who had hurt her.

But emotions did not disappear just because someone betrayed her.

"I trusted you," she said to Michael.

He looked at her.

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"You don't know."

She pointed toward the papers.

"You don't know what it felt like waking up every morning wondering if I made the wrong choice."

Michael looked ashamed.

"You don't know what it felt like carrying this baby while everyone had an opinion about me."

Her voice trembled.

"You don't know what it felt like thinking nobody cared enough to tell me the truth."

Michael whispered her name.

But she continued.

"Daniel made mistakes."

She looked at Daniel briefly.

"He hurt me."

Daniel accepted the words without argument.

"But you made me believe I was safe with you."

She looked back at Michael.

"And you used that trust against me."

Nobody spoke.

The silence was the answer.

Michael finally looked defeated.

"I never wanted you hurt."

Emily shook her head.

"But you allowed it to happen."

Daniel looked toward the road.

The pain in his expression revealed that he understood something important.

Sometimes the worst betrayal did not come from enemies.

It came from people who stood close enough to see the damage and chose silence.

A distant sound of a vehicle approaching interrupted the silence.

Everyone turned.

Another car slowed near the driveway.

Daniel immediately became alert.

Emily noticed.

"What is happening?"

Daniel looked toward the road.

"I don't know."

The car stopped.

A woman stepped out slowly.

She was older, wearing a dark coat, and carried a folder in her hand.

Michael looked shocked when he saw her.

"No."

The woman's eyes moved toward Emily.

Then toward Daniel.

"I think it's time she knows everything."

Emily felt her heart race.

Another secret was about to be revealed.

And this time, it came from someone nobody expected.

And this time, it came from someone nobody expected.

The older woman stood beside the car, holding the folder tightly against her chest as she looked at Emily with a mixture of sadness and determination.

Emily had never seen her before, but something about the woman's expression made her feel that this person carried answers.

Daniel stared at the woman in disbelief.

"Claire?"

The woman's eyes moved toward him.

"Yes, Daniel."

Michael stepped backward.

His reaction was immediate.

He looked afraid.

Emily noticed.

She had learned to pay attention to small details because every hidden truth had started with something people tried to hide.

"Who is she?" Emily asked.

Daniel remained silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

"Claire Bennett."

The name meant nothing to Emily.

But it clearly meant something to everyone else standing there.

Michael looked at Claire.

"You shouldn't be here."

Claire held the folder closer.

May you like

"I should have been here months ago."

Her voice was calm, but there was pain behind every word.
