Chương 5
“Why?”
She struggled to answer.
“Because once you know what is inside, there is no going back.”
Ethan looked at the box.
“There was never going back after you left a child in that shed.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
The pain in his voice was deserved.
Ethan opened the latch.
Inside were several folded documents, a small flash drive, and an old photograph.
He picked up the photograph first.
His breath caught.
It showed Daniel standing beside Victor.
But there was something else.
A younger version of the child from the couch was standing between them.
The image was years old.
Ethan looked at the child.
Then back at the photograph.
“How old were they here?”
Margaret answered quietly.
“Six years old.”
Ethan felt a wave of confusion.
“How long has this been going on?”
Victor said nothing.
That silence was an answer.
Ethan picked up the documents.
The first page contained names.
Dates.
Records.
Information about payments and transfers.
His eyes moved faster as he read.
“What is this?”
Victor stepped forward.
“Something you do not need to understand.”
Ethan looked up.
“That means it is something you do not want me to understand.”
Victor’s expression changed.
The calm mask began to disappear.
Daniel had spent years trying to uncover something.
Something connected to Victor.
Something important enough that he risked everything.
Ethan picked up the flash drive.
“What is on this?”
Margaret looked terrified.
“Daniel’s evidence.”
Victor moved toward the table.
Ethan immediately stepped back.
“Stay where you are.”
Victor stopped.
For the first time, Ethan saw the balance of power shift.
“You think that makes you safe?”
Victor asked.
“No.”
Ethan looked toward the child.
“But it makes me willing to fight.”
The child watched him silently.
There was fear in their face, but also trust.
Ethan realized something.
Daniel had not abandoned this child.
He had been trying to save them.
And maybe that was the truth his brother had wanted someone to discover.
Victor looked at Margaret.
“You told him everything?”
“No,” she replied.
“Not yet.”
Ethan turned toward her.
“What else is there?”
Margaret looked at the photograph in his hand.
“There is one more thing about Daniel.”
Ethan waited.
Margaret’s voice became softer.
“Your brother did not disappear.”
The room went completely still.
Ethan stared at her.
“What?”
“He was taken.”
The words felt impossible.
Victor looked away.
That reaction confirmed it.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Taken by who?”
Margaret looked at Victor.
Nobody spoke.
But Ethan already knew.
His anger returned.
“You.”
Victor’s face remained cold.
“Daniel made choices.”
“He tried to expose you.”
“He betrayed me.”
“He protected a child.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You know nothing about him.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“I know he saved someone when everyone else failed.”
Victor looked at him with something close to anger.
“Daniel always believed he could be a hero.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the child.
“He was one.”
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
It was coming from the storage room.
The child froze.
Ethan immediately understood.
The child had something with them.
He moved quickly and opened the door.
Inside was a small backpack hidden behind a stack of boxes.
The phone was inside.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Victor’s expression changed.
He recognized it.
“What is that?”
Ethan looked at him.
“You tell me.”
The phone stopped ringing.
Then a message appeared.
A single sentence.
Ethan read it silently.
Then his face changed.
Margaret noticed.
“What does it say?”
Ethan looked at her.
“It says Daniel is still alive.”
Nobody breathed.
Victor took a step backward.
For the first time, fear completely replaced his confidence.
Ethan looked at the phone again.
Another message appeared.
This time with a location.
And three words.
“Come alone, Ethan.”
Which direction should the next segment take: Daniel’s rescue or Victor’s confrontation?
Ethan stared at the message until the letters blurred in front of him.
Daniel was alive.
The thought felt impossible.
For years, Ethan had carried the pain of losing his brother without ever knowing what truly happened.
He had imagined countless explanations.
He had wondered if Daniel was hurt, if he was afraid, or if he had simply decided to leave them behind.
But he had never imagined this.
He had never imagined that Daniel was out there somewhere, waiting.
Victor moved closer.
“Delete that message.”
Ethan looked up.
The fear in Victor’s voice was impossible to ignore.
“You knew.”
Victor said nothing.
“You knew he was alive.”
Margaret looked at Victor with disbelief.
“You lied to me.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“I did what was necessary.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“No.”
Her voice shook with anger.
“You destroyed his life.”
Victor looked at her coldly.
“Your son destroyed his own life when he decided he was smarter than everyone else.”
Ethan held the phone tightly.
The message was not just a request.
It was a warning.
Daniel wanted him to come alone.
But Ethan knew better than to walk into a trap without understanding what waited for him.
He looked at the child.
Then at his mother.
Then back at Victor.
“You are not coming with me.”
Victor almost smiled.
“You think you can stop me?”
Ethan picked up the wooden box.
“No.”
He looked directly at him.
“I think you are afraid of what I will find.”
The room went silent.
Victor’s expression changed slightly.
That was enough.
Ethan had found the weakness.
Victor could control people with fear.
He could manipulate secrets.
But he could not control the truth once it was exposed.
Margaret moved closer to Ethan.
“Daniel would not have sent that message unless he had a reason.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
She looked toward the child.
“And he would not have left them behind unless he believed someone would protect them.”
Ethan looked at the child.
A strange emotion filled his chest.
May you like
Daniel had trusted him without even being there.
He had believed his younger brother would do what was right.
