Chương 6

He continued.

I spent years building something I believed would protect my son, but I did not realize the same people around me would become the greatest threat to him.

Ethan felt his throat tighten.

His father had known.

He had known something was coming.

Richard watched him carefully.

"He wanted you to have a normal life."

Ethan looked up.

"But he knew he could not give me the truth."

"No."

"Why?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Because the truth would have put you in danger."

A silence followed.

Then Ethan saw another name.

A name written near the bottom of the page.

His expression changed.

Claire noticed.

"What is it?"

Ethan did not answer immediately.

He stared at the name.

The person his father had feared.

The person connected to everything.

Finally, he whispered.

"Victor Whitmore."

Richard's face turned pale.

"That is impossible."

Ethan looked at him.

"You know that name."

Richard slowly stepped back.

"Victor is dead."

Ethan looked at the paper again.

But beneath the name was a recent date.

A date from only six months ago.

Richard's voice became almost a whisper.

"Then someone has been pretending to be dead."

Richard's words remained hanging in the office.

Then someone has been pretending to be dead.

Ethan stared at him, waiting for an explanation that would make everything suddenly make sense.

But Richard looked just as disturbed as he felt.

"Who is Victor Whitmore?"

Claire asked the question quietly.

Richard looked at her.

"Your husband's uncle."

The room became completely silent.

Ethan slowly lowered the document.

"My uncle has been dead for years."

Richard nodded.

"That is what everyone believed."

"Everyone?"

Richard looked toward the city outside the window.

"Your father believed it."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Then why is his name here?"

Richard walked back to the desk.

"Because your father discovered Victor was alive."

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

"When?"

"Months before your father died."

Ethan looked down.

The timeline suddenly felt different.

His father's death had always been explained as a tragic accident.

A sudden medical emergency.

A moment of bad luck.

But now every detail seemed suspicious.

"What happened between them?"

Richard was quiet for a moment.

"Your father and Victor were completely different people."

"How?"

"Your father wanted to build something legitimate after years of mistakes."

Richard looked at Ethan.

"Victor wanted more power."

Ethan listened carefully.

"After their father's death, they inherited the same business empire."

Claire spoke softly.

"But they chose different paths."

Richard nodded.

"Exactly."

"Your father tried to separate himself from the illegal side of the business."

"And Victor?"

"Victor believed the illegal side was the reason they became powerful."

Ethan looked at the documents.

"So my father tried to stop him."

"Yes."

"And Victor disappeared."

Richard nodded.

"Because your father forced him out."

Ethan felt a strange mixture of anger and confusion.

"My father never mentioned having a brother."

"He wanted to protect you from that world."

"But he left me in the dark."

Richard looked at him.

"Your father thought ignorance was protection."

Ethan looked away.

"And he was wrong."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew he was.

Richard sat down heavily.

"For twenty years, I thought the danger was gone."

Ethan looked at him.

"But it was not."

"No."

Richard pointed toward the documents.

"Someone has been collecting evidence."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"But they knew where to find everything."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"They knew about my father."

"Yes."

"They knew about Claire."

"Yes."

"They knew about these files."

Richard looked at him.

"Yes."

Ethan took a slow breath.

"Then they are not just exposing secrets."

Richard waited.

"They are controlling when those secrets appear."

Richard did not answer.

He did not need to.

The truth was obvious.

Someone was moving carefully.

Someone was watching.

Someone had waited twenty years.

Ethan looked at Claire.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The pain between them was still there.

The betrayal.

The years of silence.

But now there was something else.

A shared fear.

Claire stepped closer.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

"I know I hurt you."

His expression softened slightly.

"But I need you to believe one thing."

"What?"

"I never worked against you."

She held his gaze.

"I was afraid of losing you."

Ethan said nothing.

"I thought if you knew everything about my family, you would leave."

A pause.

"And I could not imagine my life without you."

The words affected him.

Because despite everything, he knew Claire.

The woman standing in front of him was not perfect.

She had made choices he disagreed with.

She had hidden the truth.

But she had also spent twenty years loving him.

Protecting him in the only way she knew how.

Ethan looked down.

"I don't know how to forgive everything yet."

Claire nodded.

"I understand."

"But I know something."

She waited.

"I don't want to lose you while we are trying to uncover this."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

Not from sadness this time.

From relief.

Richard quietly watched them.

Then he spoke.

"There is one more thing you need to know."

Ethan looked at him.

"What now?"

Richard hesitated.

"Your father left another message."

Ethan froze.

"What message?"

Richard opened the black box again.

This time, he removed a small recording device.

"He gave this to me before he died."

Ethan stared at it.

"Why did you never play it?"

Richard looked ashamed.

"Because he told me not to unless Victor returned."

The room became still.

Ethan slowly reached for the device.

His fingers touched the old plastic surface.

A part of him was afraid.

Afraid of hearing his father's voice after all these years.

Afraid that the man he loved would reveal another truth that would break everything.

But he pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice appeared.

A voice Ethan had not heard since he was twenty-two.

His father's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Ethan."

May you like

The sound alone nearly broke him.

Claire placed a hand over her mouth.
