Chương 4
Claire shook her head.
"The message came from an unknown number."
"Did you save it?"
"Yes."
She quickly walked to the kitchen counter and picked up her phone.
Her hands were still shaking as she opened the message history.
Ethan watched carefully.
There was only one message.
No name.
No photograph.
No information.
Just a sentence.
Your husband deserves to know what his life was built on.
Ethan read it silently.
The words were simple.
But they carried a cruelty that made his chest tighten.
"This was sent three weeks ago?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"Why wait until now?"
"I don't know."
Ethan looked at the message again.
"Maybe they wanted us afraid."
Claire looked at him.
"Or maybe they wanted us to find something."
The thought stayed between them.
Because it was possible.
The documents had not simply appeared.
Someone had chosen the exact moment.
The exact person.
The exact information.
Ethan walked toward the large windows overlooking the property.
For years, he had believed his home was the safest place in the world.
Now it felt like a place where secrets had been waiting in every room.
"Tomorrow morning, we contact a lawyer."
Claire nodded.
"Okay."
"And we investigate everything."
Her eyes moved toward him.
"Everything?"
"Everything."
His voice was calm.
But there was a difference between the man who entered the house earlier and the man standing there now.
The confidence was gone.
But something else had replaced it.
A determination stronger than confidence.
He was no longer trying to protect his perfect life.
He was trying to discover the real one.
The next morning arrived with a strange quietness.
The mansion that once felt warm and welcoming now felt like a place filled with unanswered questions.
Ethan had barely slept.
He sat in his private office surrounded by old files, business records, and photographs from the past twenty years.
Claire sat across from him.
For the first time in a long time, they were not pretending everything was fine.
They were two people facing the truth together.
"I need to tell you something else."
Ethan looked up.
Claire hesitated.
"What?"
"When my father died, there was one person who handled most of his remaining business affairs."
"Richard Hale."
She nodded.
"Yes."
Ethan leaned back.
The name continued appearing everywhere.
"My father trusted Richard more than anyone."
"Why?"
"Because Richard was the only person who knew how to move money between companies without attracting attention."
Ethan's expression changed.
"That sounds suspicious."
"It was."
Claire looked down.
"But at the time, I was young. I did not understand everything."
Ethan opened one of the documents.
"Why did you never tell me Richard was connected to your father?"
"Because I did not know how deep the connection was."
Ethan looked at her.
"And after you found out?"
Claire was silent.
That silence answered him.
"You still protected him."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I protected you."
Ethan sighed.
"Claire, those are not always the same thing."
She accepted the criticism.
"I know."
The honesty surprised him.
For years, Claire had always been strong.
Elegant.
Composed.
The woman who could walk into any room and make people admire her.
But today, he saw something different.
A woman who was tired of carrying a burden.
A woman who had finally reached the point where silence was impossible.
Ethan picked up his phone.
He searched through his contacts.
Richard Hale's name appeared near the top.
He stared at it for several seconds.
The man who had guided him.
The man who had advised him.
The man who had stood beside him during his company's most difficult years.
Could he really have been part of something hidden?
Ethan pressed the call button.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then the call connected.
"Ethan."
Richard's voice sounded calm.
Almost too calm.
"Richard."
A pause.
"I heard you came home early."
Ethan froze.
"How did you know that?"
Another pause.
Then a quiet breath.
"Your wife called me last night."
Ethan looked at Claire.
She looked confused.
"I did not call him."
The words were barely a whisper.
Ethan heard the change in Richard's breathing.
"You didn't?"
"No."
The silence on the other end became uncomfortable.
"Richard."
"Yes?"
"How did you know Claire was involved?"
No answer.
"Ethan, maybe we should discuss this in person."
"That is not an answer."
Richard sighed.
"I think you should come to my office."
Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.
"Why?"
"Because what you found is only part of the story."
Those words immediately caught his attention.
"Part of what story?"
Richard did not answer directly.
Instead, he said something that made Ethan's entire body become still.
"The person who sent those documents wanted you to believe your wife was hiding something from you."
Ethan looked at Claire.
"Wasn't she?"
Richard continued.
"Yes."
The answer was cold.
"But she was not the only one."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
Richard lowered his voice.
"It means you need to stop asking what Claire knew."
A pause.
"And start asking what your own family kept from you."
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Claire noticed his expression.
"What did he say?"
Ethan slowly placed the phone down.
"He said there is more."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Of course there is."
But Ethan was no longer surprised.
The night before had broken something inside him.
The belief that secrets only belonged to strangers.
Now he understood something much worse.
The people closest to him could be the ones holding them.
A few hours later, Ethan and Claire arrived at Richard Hale's office downtown.
The building stood among the tallest towers in the city.
A symbol of power.
A symbol of success.
A symbol of everything Ethan had spent his life chasing.
Richard was waiting in his private office.
The older businessman looked different than Ethan remembered.
Not weaker.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
May you like
As if he had been expecting this day for a long time.
Richard looked at Claire first.
