Chương 5

Then Ethan.

"I suppose it is finally time."

Ethan stepped forward.

"Time for what?"

Richard looked toward the city outside the window.

"Time for you to learn the truth about your father."

Ethan felt the words settle over him like a weight he could not lift.

His father.

A man he had spent his entire life trying to understand.

A man who had died when Ethan was only twenty-two.

A man whose memory had always been connected to pride, ambition, and the lessons that shaped him.

Richard walked toward the center of the office and motioned toward the chairs.

"Sit down."

Ethan did not move.

"I did not come here for a conversation."

Richard studied him.

"I know."

"Then tell me."

The older businessman looked at Claire.

She remained silent.

Richard sighed.

"Your father was not the man you believed he was."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Be careful."

Richard nodded slowly.

"I expected you to say that."

"Because you know I respected him."

"Yes."

"Because you know he was my hero."

Richard looked away.

"And that is exactly why this will hurt."

The office became silent.

The city moved outside the glass walls, completely unaware of the secrets being revealed inside.

Richard walked to a cabinet near his desk and removed a small black box.

He placed it on the table.

"I have kept this for twenty years."

Ethan stared at the box.

"What is it?"

"Something your father left behind."

Ethan looked at Claire.

She seemed surprised.

"You never told me about this."

Richard shook his head.

"Because I promised him."

Ethan's expression changed.

"You made a promise to my father?"

"Yes."

"What kind of promise?"

Richard opened the box.

Inside was an old photograph and a handwritten letter.

"The kind that I now regret keeping."

Ethan picked up the photograph.

It showed his father standing beside Richard and another man he did not recognize.

They were outside a building.

A building Ethan had never seen before.

"Who is this?"

Richard looked at the photograph.

"Your uncle."

Ethan froze.

"My uncle?"

He looked confused.

"I don't have an uncle."

Richard remained quiet.

That answer created a new fear.

"What do you mean?"

Richard sat down.

"Your father had a brother."

Ethan stared at him.

"Why did nobody tell me?"

"Because your father erased him from the family history."

The room felt colder.

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

"Why?"

Richard looked at Claire.

Then back at Ethan.

"Because your uncle knew the truth."

"About what?"

Richard took a slow breath.

"About how your father built his fortune."

Ethan looked down.

The same words again.

The same hidden world.

The same questions.

"Everyone keeps telling me my father was hiding something."

Richard nodded.

"He was."

"Then tell me."

Richard opened the letter.

"Your father was involved in illegal financial operations."

Ethan remained silent.

The words should have shocked him.

But after everything he had discovered, he felt something worse.

Disappointment.

"How involved?"

Richard hesitated.

"More than anyone knew."

Claire reached for Ethan's hand.

But he pulled away slightly.

Not because he was angry at her.

Because he was trying to process the collapse of another part of his life.

"My father taught me that success came from discipline."

Richard looked at him.

"He did."

"But he also lied."

"Yes."

The answer was painful because it was simple.

Ethan walked toward the window.

"When I started my company, he told me never to compromise my values."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"He wanted you to be different."

Ethan turned around.

"Different from him?"

Richard nodded.

"That was the reason he supported you."

"Then why hide everything?"

"Because he was ashamed."

Ethan laughed quietly.

"Ashamed?"

His voice carried disbelief.

"He spent his whole life pretending to be powerful."

Richard looked at him.

"And near the end, he realized power had cost him everything."

The room became quiet.

Richard continued.

"Your father discovered that people around him were using his companies for things he never approved of."

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

"People like Richard Hale?"

The older man accepted the accusation.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised Ethan.

"You admit it?"

"I made mistakes."

"That is a very simple word for something that destroyed lives."

Richard looked down.

"I know."

Ethan studied him.

For the first time, he saw not just the successful businessman.

He saw someone carrying regret.

"But why involve me?"

Richard looked confused.

"What?"

"My name is in those documents."

Richard's expression changed.

"What documents?"

Ethan placed the envelope on the desk.

Richard opened it.

The moment he saw the pages, his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You have seen these before."

Ethan's voice became cold.

"Have I?"

Richard looked at him.

"Someone gave you these."

"Answer the question."

Richard was silent.

That silence was enough.

Ethan stepped closer.

"You knew."

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

"Yes."

Claire looked shocked.

"You knew about these documents?"

Richard nodded.

"I knew they existed."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because they were dangerous."

Ethan's anger rose.

"Everything is always about protecting someone."

Richard looked at him.

"Because that is exactly what your father was trying to do."

Ethan stopped.

"What?"

Richard placed the papers down.

"Your father created those documents himself."

The statement changed everything.

"He created them?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he knew someone would eventually try to use his past against you."

Ethan looked at Claire.

Then at Richard.

"Then why does my name appear?"

Richard's face became serious.

"Because your father wanted to protect your future."

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't understand."

Richard walked back to the cabinet and removed another file.

"This is the part nobody knows."

He placed it in front of Ethan.

"Your father knew his enemies would eventually come after the company."

Ethan opened the file.

Inside were records.

Private notes.

Letters.

His father's handwriting.

"My father wrote this?"

Richard nodded.

Ethan began reading.

The first sentence made him stop.

May you like

If you are reading this, it means I failed to keep my family safe.

Ethan's fingers tightened around the paper.
