Chương 2

Ethan placed the documents on the table.

His hands were shaking.

"After all these years..."

He looked at the family photo beside the envelope.

A picture of a happy family.

A picture that suddenly felt different.

"After everything we built..."

His voice broke slightly.

"You let me believe a lie?"

Claire looked away.

"I thought I was protecting everyone."

"But you weren't protecting me."

His words were calm, but the pain behind them was impossible to hide.

"You were protecting yourself."

Claire began crying quietly.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just the silent tears of someone who had carried a secret for too long.

"Ethan, there is more."

He froze.

More.

The one word he never wanted to hear.

"What do you mean there is more?"

Claire looked toward the documents.

"The papers you are holding are only the beginning."

Ethan stared at her.

The mansion that once represented everything he had achieved suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The expensive furniture.

The beautiful decorations.

The family memories.

Everything around him looked like a carefully created illusion.

He picked up the family photo frame.

His younger face stared back at him.

A man who believed he had everything.

A man who had no idea what was waiting in the future.

Claire whispered his name.

But Ethan did not respond.

He was searching through memories.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

Every time Claire had looked away.

Every unexplained phone call.

Every secret meeting she claimed was nothing important.

Suddenly, all those moments carried a different meaning.

The rain outside grew stronger.

The piano music playing softly in the background seemed to disappear beneath the sound of his thoughts.

Finally, Ethan looked at Claire again.

His eyes were filled with confusion, sadness, and disbelief.

"Who else knew?"

Claire hesitated.

And that hesitation gave him the answer before she spoke.

"Almost everyone."

Ethan closed his eyes.

For a moment, he said nothing.

The most painful part was not discovering the secret.

It was realizing he had been the only person in his own life who did not know the truth.

He opened his eyes slowly.

"Then tell me everything."

Claire looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

Ethan looked down at the envelope.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at the woman he had loved for twenty years.

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

"I spent half my life believing I knew my family."

He paused.

"Now I need to know who they really are."

Claire stood silently for several seconds, as if she was trying to find the courage to open a door that could never be closed again.

Then she walked slowly toward the dining area and sat down at the long marble table.

Ethan remained standing.

He did not want comfort.

He did not want another carefully chosen explanation.

He wanted the truth.

Claire looked at the documents in front of him.

"The first thing you need to understand is that I never stopped loving you."

Ethan's expression did not change.

"Love does not erase twenty years of secrets."

Her eyes lowered.

"I know."

The honesty of those two words hurt more than an argument would have.

Claire folded her hands together, trying to control their trembling.

"When we first met, my life was not what you thought it was."

Ethan remembered.

A small coffee shop.

A rainy afternoon.

Claire sitting near the window with a book in her hands.

He had been twenty years old and struggling to build his first company.

She had been young, intelligent, and full of dreams.

He remembered how easily they connected.

How she made him laugh during the hardest years.

How she believed in him before anyone else did.

"You told me your family was wealthy," Ethan said.

Claire nodded.

"They were."

"Then what was the secret?"

She looked toward the window.

"My family was not just wealthy."

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

"What does that mean?"

Claire took a deep breath.

"My father was involved in things I did not understand when I was younger."

Ethan waited.

"He built his fortune through partnerships, investments, and businesses that looked legitimate from the outside."

Her voice became quieter.

"But behind some of those companies were decisions that hurt people."

Ethan looked at the documents again.

The papers contained names.

Dates.

Financial records.

Old reports.

Information carefully collected over years.

"You knew?"

Claire looked at him.

"I knew pieces of it."

"Pieces?"

"I was twenty-three when I found out."

Ethan shook his head slowly.

"And you never told me?"

"I wanted to."

Her voice cracked.

"But every time I tried, I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Claire looked directly into his eyes.

"That you would see me differently."

Ethan looked away.

"Claire, you were supposed to trust me."

"I did trust you."

"Then why?"

"Because I knew you."

Her words surprised him.

"I knew you would try to fix everything."

Ethan said nothing.

"And I knew you would put yourself in danger to make things right."

The room became silent again.

Because part of him knew she was right.

Ethan had always been that person.

The one who stepped forward when everyone else stepped back.

The one who believed every problem had a solution.

Claire continued.

"When my father died, I thought the past was finally over."

She touched the envelope gently.

"But then I found these."

"What are they?"

"Evidence."

"Of what?"

Claire hesitated.

"Of what my father did."

Ethan stared at her.

"And why did you hide them?"

Claire's eyes filled with sadness.

"Because your company was connected."

The words made him freeze.

"What?"

"Not directly."

She quickly explained.

"But one of your earliest investors had business relationships with my father's companies."

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"Who?"

Claire looked down.

"Richard Hale."

The name immediately changed the atmosphere.

Richard Hale had been one of Ethan's first major supporters.

A respected businessman.

A mentor.

Someone Ethan had trusted for years.

"No."

Claire watched his reaction.

"Ethan..."

"No."

May you like

He stepped away from the table.

"Richard helped me build my company."
