Chương 3
"I know."
"He believed in me when nobody else did."
"I know."
"Then why would you say his name?"
Claire's voice softened.
"Because he knew."
Ethan stopped moving.
"Knew what?"
"He knew about my father's actions."
The words settled slowly.
Like a heavy weight dropping onto his chest.
"And he never told me?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Ethan walked toward the window.
The city lights reflected across the glass.
For years, he had believed his success came from hard work, determination, and the guidance of people he respected.
Now he wondered how much of his life had been built on things he never understood.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Claire looked at him.
"Because someone else found out."
Ethan turned around.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
The answer frightened him.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"Three weeks ago, someone sent me copies of these documents."
Claire pointed at the envelope.
"They told me the truth was going to come out soon."
Ethan looked at the papers.
"And you said nothing?"
"I was trying to protect you."
"By lying again?"
Claire closed her eyes.
The pain on her face was unmistakable.
"I know how it sounds."
"It sounds like you decided I was not strong enough to handle my own life."
"No."
Her answer came quickly.
"It sounds like I was trying to protect the man I love."
Ethan wanted to argue.
But he could not.
Because he saw something in her face.
Not manipulation.
Not guilt alone.
Fear.
Real fear.
A fear she had carried by herself.
The old butler, Thomas, finally stepped forward from the hallway.
"Sir."
Ethan looked at him.
"You knew too?"
Thomas lowered his head.
"Yes."
Another wound.
Another person.
Another secret.
"How long?"
"Since before your wedding."
Ethan stared at him.
The answer felt impossible.
"You were there when I married her."
"Yes, sir."
"You watched me promise my life to her while knowing this?"
Thomas looked devastated.
"I believed the truth would destroy a good man."
Ethan laughed quietly.
But there was no humor in it.
"So everyone decided what I could handle."
Nobody answered.
The silence was the answer.
Ethan picked up the documents again.
He turned the pages carefully.
The more he read, the more questions appeared.
There were transactions.
Hidden accounts.
Names of people he recognized.
People who had attended his parties.
People who had shaken his hand.
People who had congratulated him on his success.
His entire world suddenly looked different.
Then he saw something that made him stop.
A signature.
His eyes narrowed.
"No."
Claire looked worried.
"What?"
Ethan held up the document.
"This signature."
His voice changed.
"You said these records were from my father-in-law's company."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why is my name here?"
Claire went pale.
"What?"
Ethan turned the paper toward her.
At the bottom of the page was his name.
Not handwritten.
Not signed by him.
But listed in an official record.
"This is impossible."
Claire stood up.
"I have never seen that page."
Ethan looked at her.
For the first time that night, both of them looked equally confused.
The secret they thought they were uncovering had just revealed something deeper.
Someone had not only hidden the truth.
Someone had been creating a new one.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Sir, what does that mean?"
Ethan stared at the document.
His voice was barely audible.
"It means someone wanted me connected to something I never did."
The room fell silent.
The family photo remained beside the envelope.
A picture of a life that suddenly felt surrounded by shadows.
Ethan looked at Claire.
"Who sent you these documents?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
He looked back at the papers.
"Then we need to find out."
Claire watched him carefully.
"Are you angry at me?"
Ethan looked at her for a long moment.
He was hurt.
He was confused.
He was exhausted.
But beneath everything else was something stronger.
Determination.
"I am angry that you carried this alone."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"But I am more afraid of what happens if we do not uncover the rest."
The music of the storm outside continued.
The mansion remained quiet.
But for the first time that night, Ethan and Claire were no longer standing on opposite sides.
They were standing together against something they could not see.
Something that had been hidden for twenty years.
And somewhere in the darkness beyond their home, someone was waiting for them to discover the final piece of the truth.
Ethan remained standing beside the marble table, staring at the document that carried his name like a warning.
The storm outside continued to move across the sky, but inside the mansion, the silence felt heavier than thunder.
Claire slowly approached him.
"Let me see it again."
Ethan handed her the page.
She read it carefully.
Her expression changed with every second.
"This is not possible."
Those were the same words Ethan had said moments earlier.
But hearing them from Claire made the situation feel even more terrifying.
"You really never saw this before?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Ethan studied her face.
After twenty years together, he knew every expression she made.
He knew when she was nervous.
He knew when she was hiding something.
He knew when she was afraid.
And right now, she looked genuinely shocked.
Someone else had placed his name inside a secret he never knew existed.
Someone else had been moving pieces around them.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Perhaps there is another explanation."
Ethan looked at him.
"After tonight, I do not think there are any simple explanations left."
Thomas lowered his eyes.
The old butler had always been a symbol of stability inside the Whitmore home.
He knew where every family memory was stored.
He knew every tradition.
He knew every routine.
But now even his presence reminded Ethan of all the things people had chosen not to tell him.

Ethan placed the document back inside the envelope.
"Where is the person who sent this?"
