Chương 7

The fear was still there.

The pain was still there.

But Evelyn was no longer standing in confusion.

She was standing with purpose.

They walked back toward the banquet hall.

The celebration was still continuing, but the atmosphere had changed.

People noticed them returning together.

Not as enemies.

Not as two people fighting.

But as two people carrying the same mission.

Several guests looked away, pretending not to watch.

Evelyn ignored them.

Her attention was on one person.

Margaret stood near the far side of the room, speaking with other guests.

She was elegant and composed.

Her smile was calm.

Almost too calm.

When Margaret saw Evelyn approaching, her expression remained unchanged.

“Evelyn,” she said warmly.

“I was wondering where you went.”

Evelyn stopped in front of her.

For a moment, she said nothing.

She simply looked at the woman she had trusted for years.

Margaret's smile slowly faded.

Something in Evelyn's eyes told her that something had changed.

“What happened?”

Evelyn held up the documents.

“Tell me the truth.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried enough weight to silence the conversation around them.

Margaret looked at the papers.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Evelyn.

“I don't know what you think you found.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“You knew.”

Margaret's face changed slightly.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel noticed.

Evelyn noticed.

“You knew about Lily.”

Margaret remained silent.

The silence became an answer.

Lily stood beside Evelyn, holding her hand.

The older woman immediately softened her voice.

“Not here.”

Margaret looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“I think we should talk privately.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

“Because after all these years, I think you owe Lily the truth.”

Margaret looked toward the child.

For the first time, guilt appeared on her face.

Daniel saw it.

Evelyn saw it.

And Lily saw it too.

The little girl did not understand the secret.

But she understood that Margaret was connected to the sadness around her.

They moved into a quieter room away from the guests.

The elegant decorations continued inside, but the feeling was completely different.

Three adults stood facing each other while Lily remained close to Evelyn.

Margaret slowly sat down.

She looked tired suddenly.

Older.

Like carrying the secret had taken something from her too.

“I never wanted it to become this.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“Then why did you let it?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because I thought I was protecting her.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You made that choice for everyone.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You did the same thing.”

The words struck him.

Daniel did not argue.

Because there was truth in them.

Evelyn looked between them.

Two people who had hidden the truth for different reasons.

Two people who believed they were protecting Lily.

Two people who had caused pain by making choices without allowing anyone else to decide.

“Enough,” Evelyn said.

Her voice was firm.

“No more excuses.”

Margaret looked up.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“I want the truth.”

Margaret took a deep breath.

And after years of silence, she finally began to speak.

And after years of silence, she finally began to speak.

Margaret looked at Lily first.

Her expression softened with sadness, and for the first time, she looked less like a confident woman who always knew what to say and more like someone facing the consequences of her choices.

“I need to start with an apology,” Margaret said.

Evelyn remained standing.

“No.”

Margaret looked up.

“Not yet.”

Evelyn's voice was controlled.

“An apology comes after the truth.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“You are right.”

Daniel stood quietly beside them.

He did not look angry anymore.

He looked exhausted.

Because he had spent years waiting for this moment, but now that it had arrived, he realized the truth would hurt everyone involved.

Margaret took a slow breath.

“When Lily came into our lives, there was a situation nobody understood completely.”

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it was true.”

Margaret looked at the documents on the table.

“But the mistake was believing we had the right to decide everything without telling you.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Margaret struggled to answer.

“Because we were afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Of losing her.”

The answer made Evelyn's expression change.

She had heard those words before from Daniel.

Now Margaret was saying the same thing.

“You all used the same excuse,” Evelyn said quietly.

“You were afraid.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“And because you were afraid, you took away my choice.”

Margaret did not deny it.

“Yes.”

The honesty was painful.

Evelyn looked away for a moment.

She wanted to be furious.

She wanted to reject every explanation.

But she could see that the truth was not simple.

People had made terrible choices while believing they were doing something necessary.

That did not make those choices right.

But it explained why the secret had survived for so long.

Margaret continued.

“Years ago, when everything happened, Lily needed stability.”

“She needed someone who would put her first.”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“She always had that.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

A tear formed in her eyes.

“She did.”

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Then why hide everything?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Because the truth was complicated.”

Daniel's voice became sharper.

“Truth is supposed to be complicated.”

“It is still better than a lie.”

Margaret accepted the criticism.

“I know.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“I should have trusted you.”

Evelyn's expression softened slightly, but she did not move.

“You should have.”

Margaret nodded.

“I thought I was protecting Lily from pain.”

“But instead, I created a future where she would discover everything at once.”

Her voice became quiet.

“And that was my biggest mistake.”

Lily watched the adults carefully.

She did not understand every word.

But she understood enough to know that something important was being discussed.

“Was everyone trying to protect me?”

Her small voice changed the room.

The adults became silent.

Evelyn immediately turned toward her.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

May you like

Lily looked confused.

“Then why does it feel like everyone was hiding from me?”
