Chương 4

Now they felt like a warning.
Ethan suddenly spoke.
“Dad.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
The boy pointed toward a painting on the wall.
“That picture is crooked.”
Daniel looked at the painting.
It was a large family portrait from many years ago.
His father stood in the center.
Margaret stood beside him.
A younger version of Daniel stood near the front.
Daniel walked closer.
The painting had always been there.
But now he noticed something strange.
The frame was slightly separated from the wall.
He removed it carefully.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
Margaret covered her mouth.
“I never knew that was there.”
Daniel reached inside.
His fingers touched something hard.
He pulled out a small wooden box covered in dust.
The silver key in his hand suddenly felt heavier.
Ethan watched silently.
Daniel inserted the key.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the lock opened.
The sound echoed through the quiet room.
Inside the box were old photographs, documents, and a sealed envelope.
On the front of the envelope was a name.
Ethan Carter.
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
Margaret stepped closer.
The secret they had been chasing was finally in front of them.
But Daniel already knew one thing.
Whatever was inside that envelope would change the way they understood Ethan’s entire story.
Daniel stared at the name written across the envelope.
Ethan Carter.
His fingers tightened around the paper as a thousand impossible thoughts rushed through his mind.
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Nobody spoke.
Even Margaret, who had spent the entire evening demanding answers, seemed afraid of what they were about to discover.
Daniel slowly picked up the envelope.
“It has his name on it,” he said.
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”
“Why?”
She looked down.
“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“That is not an answer.”
“No,” Margaret admitted.
“It is not.”
Ethan watched his father carefully.
The boy could feel the tension even though he did not understand the reason behind it.
Daniel noticed his son’s worried face and immediately softened.
He placed the envelope on the desk.
“Whatever is inside this, we read it together.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“Together?”
“Yes.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Nothing happens without you knowing.”
The simple reassurance seemed to calm him.
Margaret stood silently as Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded letter and several photographs.
The first photograph showed a young woman holding a baby.
Daniel looked at it and froze.
He recognized the woman.
Not from his own memories.
But from old photographs his father had kept hidden.
“Who is she?” Daniel asked.
Margaret stepped closer.
Her eyes moved to the picture.
“That is Sarah.”
The name meant nothing to Daniel.
“Who is Sarah?”
Margaret took a slow breath.
“She was someone your father cared about deeply.”
Daniel looked confused.
“My father was married to my mother.”
“I know.”
“Then why did he keep this?”
Margaret did not answer immediately.
Daniel unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
His father’s words stared back at him.
Daniel began reading silently.
My dear Daniel.
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found its way to you.
I know you will have questions.
I know you will feel betrayed.
But before you judge anyone, I need you to understand why I made the choices I made.
Daniel stopped reading for a moment.
His hands trembled slightly.
His father had written directly to him.
He continued.
There is a child who deserves to know where he came from.
A child who was never responsible for the mistakes made by adults.
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
The boy was sitting quietly, unaware that every word was connected to him.
The letter continued.
When Ethan entered this family, I promised I would protect him.
Not because of his blood.
Not because of a name.
But because every child deserves someone who chooses them.
Daniel felt his eyes become wet.
He looked back at the letter.
His father had known about Ethan.
But how?
He kept reading.
There are people who will tell you that family is only created by birth.
They are wrong.
Family is created by love, sacrifice, and the promises we keep when nobody is watching.
Daniel stopped.
Those words sounded exactly like his father.
But they did not explain the mystery.
They did not explain Sarah.
They did not explain why Margaret had reacted with fear.
He turned the page.
The final part of the letter was shorter.
Ethan is not a secret to be ashamed of.
He is a child who was protected from a secret that was never his burden to carry.
Daniel looked up.
“Protected from what?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with emotion.
“I can explain.”
Daniel placed the letter down.
“Then explain everything.”
Margaret sat slowly in the chair near the desk.
For the first time that night, she looked exhausted.
“Sarah was your father’s daughter.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“She was his daughter from before he met your mother.”
Daniel tried to process the information.
“My father had another child?”
“Yes.”
“And Ethan?”
Margaret looked at the boy.
“Ethan is Sarah’s son.”
Silence filled the room.
Ethan looked confused.
Daniel felt like the ground beneath him had shifted.
His father had another daughter.
That daughter had a son.
And that son had been part of their family all along.
“Why didn’t I know?”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Because Sarah wanted it that way.”
“Why?”
“Because she was afraid.”
Daniel walked away from the desk.
His mind was racing.
“What happened to her?”
Margaret looked toward the window.
“She died when Ethan was very young.”
The words landed heavily.
Daniel immediately looked at Ethan.
The boy was staring at the floor.
He had heard enough to understand that something important was being discussed.
Daniel walked over and sat beside him.
“Ethan.”
The boy looked up.
“You okay?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Was my mom Sarah?”
May you like
Daniel felt his heart break.
He hated that his son had to learn something so important in a room full of secrets.
