Chương 7

Then the hospital door suddenly opened again.

A security officer rushed inside.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Thomas looked up.

“What happened?”

The officer hesitated.

Then looked at Clara.

“Richard Vale is not outside anymore.”

Everyone froze.

Clara felt a cold wave move through her.

“Where is he?”

The officer swallowed.

“He left the building.”

Thomas’s expression tightened.

“Then why are you here?”

The officer looked down.

“Because before he left…”

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“He told us to give this to Ms. Bennett.”

Clara stared at the envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

The handwriting was Richard’s.

And beneath her name were four words.

You deserve the truth.

Clara stared at the envelope for several seconds.

Nobody spoke.

The entire room seemed to wait for her decision.

Thomas looked worried.

Elizabeth looked afraid.

Emily looked like she already knew what was inside.

Clara reached forward slowly.

Her fingers touched the paper.

A strange feeling moved through her.

For years, she had searched for answers about her mother.

Now, the answers were everywhere.

And somehow that was more frightening than not knowing.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single letter.

The paper was clean.

The handwriting was careful.

Richard Vale had written it himself.

Clara began reading.

Clara,

If you are reading this, then Thomas finally decided to tell you everything.

I know you probably hate me.

You should.

I have done terrible things.

But before you decide what kind of man I am, I want you to know what happened.

Clara stopped.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Thomas watched her carefully.

Richard continued.

Your mother was not my enemy because she wanted power.

She became my enemy because she believed people deserved the truth.

Clara looked up briefly.

Elizabeth lowered her eyes.

She knew this story was not going to be simple.

Clara continued reading.

Twenty years ago, I discovered that my own company was built on secrets I did not understand.

People around me were making decisions without my knowledge.

They were using my name.

My reputation.

My resources.

They made me responsible for crimes I did not commit.

Clara frowned.

She looked at Thomas.

“Is this true?”

Thomas was silent for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“Partly.”

Clara looked confused.

“Partly?”

Elizabeth stepped closer.

“Richard was manipulated too.”

Clara looked at her.

“By who?”

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told her the truth was deeper than she expected.

She looked back at the letter.

The next words changed everything.

The people controlling me knew Elizabeth had discovered them.

They knew she had evidence.

They knew Thomas would help her.

And they knew I was the only person close enough to stop her.

Clara’s hand tightened around the paper.

Richard wrote that he had a choice.

He could have protected himself.

He could have allowed Elizabeth to disappear.

He could have saved his own name.

But instead, he made a decision that destroyed his family.

He helped them find her.

Clara looked up sharply.

“What?”

Elizabeth’s face became painful.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Emily whispered.

“My father gave them information.”

Clara stared at the letter again.

Richard continued.

I was a coward.

I thought I could control the situation.

I thought I could protect my daughter and fix everything later.

I was wrong.

Clara felt a strange emotion building inside her.

Not forgiveness.

Not anger.

Something more complicated.

A man who had hurt them all was admitting he had been wrong.

But that did not erase what happened.

The letter continued.

Your mother survived because my daughter chose courage over loyalty.

Emily looked down.

Clara glanced at her.

She had known the truth.

She had carried it alone.

Richard’s final words on the page were different.

They were not cold.

They were not powerful.

They sounded like a broken father.

I spent twenty years trying to repair something that could never be repaired.

I cannot give you back your childhood.

I cannot give Elizabeth back the years she lost.

I cannot erase what I did.

But I can give you the evidence that started all of this.

Clara reached the end of the letter.

A final sentence was written below.

The truth is hidden where your mother trusted me most.

She stared.

“What does that mean?”

Emily looked at the key on the table.

“That key.”

Everyone turned.

Emily picked it up.

“It is not just a key.”

She held it carefully.

“It is a location.”

Thomas looked surprised.

“You know where?”

Emily nodded.

“My father told me years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Emily looked at Clara.

“Because I was waiting for you.”

Clara frowned.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

Emily took a breath.

“Your mother made one condition.”

Elizabeth looked down.

“She wanted Clara to choose.”

Clara looked at her.

“Choose what?”

“Whether she wanted the truth.”

Elizabeth’s voice was soft.

“Or whether she wanted the life we built for her.”

Clara looked around the room.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her closest friend.

Three people who had protected her in completely different ways.

“I want the truth.”

Nobody questioned her.

Because they already knew.

Emily looked at the key.

“Then we have to go tonight.”

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Richard gave you that letter for a reason.”

“What reason?”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“Because he knows someone else is watching.”

The room became tense again.

Elizabeth moved closer to Clara.

“He is right.”

Clara looked at her mother.

“You think someone else knows?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“Richard was never the only person involved.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“My father said the same thing.”

Clara looked at her.

“You mean there is someone above him?”

Emily nodded.

“Someone who has spent twenty years making sure the truth never came out.”

The hospital lights flickered again.

This time nobody ignored it.

The security officer looked toward the hallway.

“I should check the floor.”

Thomas grabbed Clara’s hand.

“No.”

May you like

Everyone looked at him.

His face had changed.
