Chương 3

The small movement did not escape her.

“You found it.”

Thomas looked furious.

“Do not listen to him.”

Richard sighed.

“After all these years, you still think you can protect her.”

Clara looked between them.

“What is inside this pendant?”

Neither man answered immediately.

That silence told her more than words could.

Richard slowly walked closer.

“Your father has spent your entire life building a story.”

Clara’s jaw tightened.

“Stay away from me.”

He stopped.

“I understand why you are angry.”

“You do not know anything about me.”

Richard looked almost sympathetic.

“I know more about you than you realize.”

Thomas forced himself higher against the pillow.

“Clara, remember what I told you.”

She looked at him.

“Trust what you see.”

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

“That is exactly what I would tell her too.”

Clara felt trapped between two versions of the same past.

One man had raised her.

The other claimed to know the truth.

But only one of them had spent years protecting her.

“Why are you here now?” she asked Richard.

His expression changed slightly.

“Because your father is dying.”

The words were cruel in their simplicity.

“And before he dies, he wants to destroy people who cannot defend themselves.”

Thomas looked at him with disgust.

“You still lie the same way.”

Richard ignored him.

“Clara, your mother was not innocent.”

The sentence struck her like a physical blow.

She stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“Do not believe him.”

Richard continued.

“She betrayed everyone around her.”

Clara felt anger replacing her fear.

“You expect me to believe a stranger over my own father?”

Richard looked at Thomas.

“No.”

Then he looked back at Clara.

“I expect you to read the truth for yourself.”

He reached into his jacket.

Clara stepped back.

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Do not.”

Richard slowly removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table beside the bed.

“Inside are documents your father never wanted you to see.”

Clara stared at the envelope.

“What documents?”

“Your mother’s final records.”

Thomas’s breathing became heavier.

“Clara, he is trying to confuse you.”

Richard walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“Ask yourself one question.”

Clara looked at him.

“If your father loved you so much, why did he hide the truth for twenty years?”

The door closed behind him.

The room became silent again.

Clara stood frozen.

The envelope sat on the table.

The pendant rested in her hand.

And the man who had always been her safest place looked suddenly like someone carrying a lifetime of regret.

“Dad.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Tell me the truth.”

His eyes filled with pain.

“I am.”

“No more secrets.”

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered.

“There is one more thing you need to know about your mother.”

Clara waited.

Thomas opened his eyes.

“The woman you called your mother was protecting someone else that night.”

Her breathing stopped.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at the pendant.

“Your real family.”

Clara felt the world go completely still.

Because for the first time in her life, she wondered if the family she knew had never been the family she was born into.

Clara could not move.

The words echoed inside her mind long after Thomas stopped speaking.

Your real family.

She looked at the elderly man lying in the hospital bed, searching his face for some sign that he had not meant what he said.

But Thomas only looked broken.

Not like a man caught in a lie.

Like a man who had carried a painful truth for too long.

“Dad…”

Her voice cracked.

“Who am I?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

The question seemed to hurt him more than any wound.

“You are my daughter.”

Clara shook her head slowly.

“That is not what I asked.”

A tear moved down the side of his face.

“I know.”

The room became unbearably quiet.

The machines continued their steady rhythm, unaware that Clara’s entire world had shifted.

Thomas reached for her hand again.

“I need you to understand something.”

She looked down at their fingers.

“I loved you before I knew the truth.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Before you knew what?”

Thomas stared at the ceiling.

“Before I knew you were never supposed to survive.”

Clara felt a coldness spread through her.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas struggled to breathe.

“When your mother discovered what Richard Vale was doing, she realized she could not fight him alone.”

He paused.

“She knew he would come after everyone connected to the evidence.”

Clara listened without blinking.

“She knew about you.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“You were the only thing she cared about more than exposing him.”

Clara touched the pendant in her hand.

“So what happened?”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“The night everything changed, your mother came to my house carrying a small bag.”

His voice became distant, like he was returning to a memory from decades ago.

“She was terrified.”

Clara imagined a woman she barely remembered.

A woman smiling in old photographs.

A woman whose voice existed only in fragments inside her mind.

“She told me that Richard knew she had evidence against him.”

Thomas swallowed.

“She told me she had to disappear.”

Clara frowned.

“Why would she leave me?”

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“She never left you.”

The answer came quickly.

With pain.

“She tried to take you with her.”

Clara’s expression changed.

“What?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Your mother knew that if Richard found you, he would use you to control her.”

Clara’s hand moved to her mouth.

“She planned to protect you.”

“Then why don’t I remember?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because she never got the chance.”

The hospital room felt colder.

“What happened that night?”

Thomas took a long breath.

“She was supposed to meet someone who could help her escape.”

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

“A man named Daniel Cross.”

Clara searched her memory.

The name sounded familiar.

“Why do I know that name?”
