Chương 5

Clara looked toward the closed door.
“He already knows.”
Thomas nodded.
“That is why I needed you to have the truth before he could control the story.”
Clara looked at the envelope Richard left.
“Maybe he knows something you are not telling me.”
Thomas’s expression became painful.
“Maybe.”
The answer surprised her.
“You admit that?”
“I am old enough to know that every person carries their own version of the truth.”
He looked at her.
“But I also know what I saw.”
“What did you see?”
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
“I saw your mother choose you over herself.”
His voice softened.
“I saw her put your safety above her own future.”
Clara wiped her tears.
“Then why did everyone tell me she died?”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Because Richard made sure that was the only story people could believe.”
A soft knock interrupted them.
This time, neither of them spoke.
The door opened slowly.
A woman stood there.
Clara recognized her immediately.
Emma.
Her blonde hair was tied back loosely, and her face was pale.
The moment their eyes met, Clara knew.
Emma already knew what Thomas had told her.
“Clara.”
Her voice was quiet.
Clara stood.
“How long have you been here?”
Emma looked down.
“Long enough.”
The pain in Clara’s chest grew.
“You knew.”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“You knew who I was.”
Emma stepped inside.
“I knew who you were born as.”
Clara looked away.
“That is not the same thing.”
“I know.”
Emma closed the door behind her.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The three people in the room carried decades of secrets between them.
Finally, Clara turned back.
“Tell me everything.”
Emma looked at Thomas.
He gave a small nod.
She took a deep breath.
“Your mother’s name was Elizabeth.”
Clara swallowed.
She knew that name.
But hearing it spoken now felt different.
“She was not just your mother.”
Emma continued.
“She was the person who discovered Richard’s entire operation.”
Clara listened.
“She had evidence that could destroy him.”
“What kind of evidence?”
Emma looked toward the envelope.
“Evidence proving that Richard had people inside law enforcement, business, and government.”
Thomas added quietly.
“He had built an entire network.”
Clara looked between them.
“And my mother tried to expose him.”
“Yes.”
Emma nodded.
“But Richard found out.”
“What happened that night?”
Emma’s face changed.
Pain crossed her features.
“I was there.”
Clara stared.
“You were?”
Emma nodded slowly.
“I was twenty years old.”
She sat down near the window.
“Your mother called me because she knew she might not make it.”
Clara felt tears returning.
“She gave you me.”
Emma nodded.
“She told me to take you and run.”
Her voice broke.
“She told me that if anything happened, I had to make sure you grew up knowing love.”
Clara looked at Thomas.
“But you raised me.”
Thomas nodded.
“Because Emma was too young and Richard was watching everyone connected to Elizabeth.”
Emma looked at Clara.
“We made a decision.”
“You both lied to me.”
The words came out sharper than Clara intended.
Emma accepted them.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
“But every lie was meant to keep you alive.”
Clara looked away.
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted someone to blame.
But all she saw were people who looked exhausted from carrying something heavy.
“What happened to my mother?”
Emma’s expression changed.
She looked toward Thomas.
Neither of them answered immediately.
That frightened Clara more than anything.
Finally, Thomas spoke.
“She survived.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Emma looked down.
“Your mother lived.”
Clara stopped breathing.
“Where is she?”
Thomas looked at her with sorrow.
“She spent years trying to get back to you.”
Clara’s voice trembled.
“Then why didn’t she?”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she was protecting you.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“She knew Richard would use you against her.”
“No.”
Clara’s voice became stronger.
“I need the truth.”
Emma reached into her bag.
She removed a small photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Clara slowly picked it up.
The picture showed a woman standing beside a young girl.
The girl was only a few years old.
But Clara recognized herself.
The woman was older than the photographs she remembered.
Different.
Tired.
But alive.
On the back of the picture was a handwritten message.
Clara turned it over.
Her hands began shaking.
The message was only one sentence.
I never stopped looking for you.
A sob escaped her.
For twenty years, she had believed she was abandoned.
For twenty years, she had carried the pain of losing a mother.
And now she discovered the truth was something completely different.
Her mother had been searching for her.
Emma reached for her hand.
“Clara.”
But Clara pulled away.
“Where is she?”
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
Clara looked at Thomas.
“Where is my mother?”
Thomas’s eyes filled with regret.
“She is closer than you think.”
Clara stared.
“What does that mean?”
Before Thomas could answer, the hospital room lights flickered.
Everyone turned toward the door.
A shadow moved beneath it.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Because she is standing outside.”
Nobody moved.
The voice outside the door was soft.
Almost gentle.
But Clara felt every muscle in her body tense.
Because there was something about that voice.
Something familiar.
Something buried deep inside memories she had spent years trying to recover.
Emma stood slowly.
Her face had lost all color.
Thomas looked toward the door, and for the first time Clara saw a different kind of emotion in him.
Not fear.
Recognition.
The door handle turned.
The room seemed to hold its breath.
Then the door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She was older than the photographs Clara had seen.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver.
Her face carried the marks of years spent carrying pain.
But her eyes were the same.
Clara knew them immediately.
May you like
The same eyes she had seen in childhood dreams.
The same eyes looking back at her from old photographs.
