Chương 4

Thomas looked at her carefully.
“Because you have seen him before.”
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“When?”
“Every year on your birthday.”
Clara stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Thomas looked toward the small table beside the bed.
“There is a photograph inside the drawer.”
She slowly opened it.
Her hands shook as she searched through the items.
After a few seconds, she found an old photograph.
The edges were worn.
The image showed a younger Thomas standing beside a woman Clara recognized immediately.
Her mother.
But there was another person in the picture.
A man standing slightly behind them.
Clara stared at his face.
The memory came slowly.
A stranger at a distance.
A man who appeared at family events but was always introduced as someone from her father’s business circle.
“Daniel Cross.”
Thomas nodded.
“He knew the truth.”
Clara looked up.
“Where is he now?”
Thomas’s expression changed.
“He disappeared the same night your mother did.”
A silence followed.
Then Clara looked back at the envelope Richard left behind.
“Why would he give me those documents?”
Thomas’s face tightened.
“Because Richard wants you to doubt everything.”
“But what if some of it is true?”
The question hurt him.
Clara immediately regretted saying it.
But she needed answers.
Thomas looked at her.
“I know I failed you.”
Her eyes softened.
“Dad…”
“No.”
He gently squeezed her hand.
“I should have told you.”
His voice trembled.
“I convinced myself that hiding the truth was protecting you.”
He looked at the pendant.
“But secrets do not disappear.”
Clara sat down slowly.
“What is inside the pendant?”
Thomas was silent.
Then he said something she never expected.
“Your birth certificate.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“The real one.”
She opened the pendant again.
The tiny folded paper seemed impossible to contain something so important.
“There is another compartment.”
Clara examined it carefully.
After a moment, she found another hidden section.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
Older than the first.
Her fingers trembled as she unfolded it.
There were only a few words written.
A name.
A date.
And a message.
Clara read it quietly.
Then she looked up.
“Thomas…”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
The name on the paper was not hers.
It was another name.
The name she had been born with.
“Why would my mother hide my real identity?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because your identity was the only thing keeping you alive.”
Clara felt tears fall onto the paper.
“My entire life was a lie.”
“No.”
Thomas’s voice became stronger.
“Your life was real.”
She looked at him.
“Then what was fake?”
“The people who tried to control it.”
The door suddenly opened.
Both of them turned.
A nurse stood there holding a clipboard.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked uncomfortable.
“There is someone here asking to see Ms. Bennett.”
Clara immediately stood.
“Who?”
The nurse glanced toward the hallway.
“Richard Vale.”
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“No.”
The nurse looked confused.
“He says it is urgent.”
Clara looked at Thomas.
The fear returned to his eyes.
But this time, she saw something else.
Determination.
“Do not let him come in.”
The nurse nodded quickly and stepped away.
The door closed.
Clara turned back.
“He is not going to stop.”
Thomas looked at her.
“No.”
“Then I need to know everything.”
He was quiet.
For several seconds, the old man looked like he was fighting with himself.
Finally, he nodded.
“There is a reason Richard has spent twenty years looking for you.”
Clara waited.
Thomas’s voice became barely audible.
“Your mother did not just discover his crimes.”
“She discovered his weakness.”
Clara leaned closer.
“What weakness?”
Thomas looked directly into her eyes.
“Richard Vale has a daughter.”
The words made her freeze.
“And?”
Thomas took a breath.
“She is the person who helped your mother escape.”
Clara stared at him.
“Who is she?”
Thomas looked toward the closed door.
Then back at Clara.
“Someone you have known your entire life.”
Her heart began beating faster.
“No.”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Clara shook her head.
“That is impossible.”
But Thomas’s expression told her it was not.
“The person who helped your mother survive…”
He paused.
“The person who protected your secret…”
Another pause.
“Is the woman you have always believed was your closest friend.”
Clara stood completely still.
The words felt impossible.
The person who protected your secret is the woman you have always believed was your closest friend.
Her mind searched through every face, every conversation, every memory.
There was only one person who appeared.
Emma Lawson.
Her best friend since college.
The woman who had stood beside her through heartbreak, celebrations, and every difficult moment.
The woman who had held her hand at her father’s hospital appointments.
The woman who always told her she was lucky to have Thomas as a father.
“No,” Clara whispered.
Thomas watched her carefully.
“I know it is difficult to accept.”
“Emma?”
He did not answer.
He did not need to.
The silence confirmed it.
Clara stepped away from the bed.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Emma would have told me.”
Thomas looked at her with sadness.
“She promised your mother she would never reveal the truth unless it was necessary.”
Clara stared at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Thomas looked down.
“Since the day she came back.”
Clara’s breathing changed.
“Came back?”
Thomas nodded.
“After your mother disappeared, Emma was the one who found you.”
The room became quiet.
Clara felt memories returning.
Small pieces of a childhood she never fully understood.
A woman carrying her through a storm.
A familiar voice telling her everything would be okay.
A feeling of safety.
But the face had never been clear.
“You were there,” Clara whispered.
Thomas looked at her.
“You were too young to remember.”
“Emma was there.”
“Yes.”
Clara covered her mouth.
All those years.
All those moments.
Her closest friend had known.
She sat back down slowly.
“Why would she hide this from me?”
Thomas sighed.
“Because your mother made her promise.”
May you like
“Why?”
“Because if Richard knew you survived, he would never stop searching.”
