Chương 6

The same eyes that had somehow remained in her memory despite time.

The woman stopped when she saw Clara.

Neither of them spoke.

For a moment, the world disappeared.

Then the woman whispered one word.

“Clara.”

The sound of her name broke something inside her.

Her knees weakened.

She grabbed the edge of the chair beside her.

“No.”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Clara looked at Thomas.

Then Emma.

Then back at the woman.

“My mother?”

The woman closed her eyes.

A tear fell down her cheek.

“Yes.”

The answer was quiet.

But it changed everything.

Clara wanted to run toward her.

She wanted to ask a thousand questions.

She wanted to hold the person she had spent twenty years believing she lost.

But another part of her remained frozen.

Because grief was easier than hope.

Hope could hurt more.

“You were alive.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Elizabeth nodded.

“I was.”

Clara’s expression tightened.

“Then why?”

The question carried every birthday without her.

Every holiday.

Every night she wondered why she was not enough to stay.

“Why did you leave me?”

Elizabeth looked like the words physically wounded her.

“I never left you.”

Clara shook her head.

“You were gone.”

“I know.”

“You missed everything.”

Elizabeth stepped closer.

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I missed your first day of school.”

She took another step.

“I missed watching you become the woman you are.”

Another tear fell.

“I missed every moment I prayed I would see.”

Clara looked away.

She did not want to cry.

She did not want this woman to see how much she had hurt.

But she could not stop the tears.

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Elizabeth looked at Thomas.

Then Emma.

Then Clara.

“Because Richard was still watching.”

Clara’s anger returned.

“Richard.”

She said his name with bitterness.

“He controlled my entire life?”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“He tried.”

The room became silent.

Elizabeth looked at Thomas.

“You told her.”

Thomas nodded.

“I had to.”

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“You were right.”

Clara noticed the sadness between them.

A sadness built from years of impossible choices.

“Tell me everything.”

Elizabeth looked at her daughter.

She moved slowly toward the chair beside the bed.

“But first, I need you to understand something.”

Clara waited.

“The night I disappeared, I was not running away from you.”

Elizabeth’s voice trembled.

“I was running toward a way to save you.”

Clara stared.

“Richard knew about the evidence.”

Elizabeth nodded.

“He knew I had proof of everything he had done.”

She looked at Thomas.

“He knew Thomas was helping me.”

Thomas looked down.

“And he knew Emma was the only person I trusted enough to protect you.”

Emma lowered her eyes.

Clara looked at her.

“So you took me?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was filled with emotion.

“Your mother gave you to me for one night.”

Clara looked confused.

“One night?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“I planned to come back the next morning.”

Her voice became quieter.

“But Richard found me first.”

Clara felt her chest tighten.

“What happened?”

Elizabeth looked toward the window.

“I was captured.”

Nobody spoke.

“He wanted the evidence.”

Thomas’s hands tightened.

“He thought if he kept her hidden, everything would disappear.”

Elizabeth continued.

“But he made one mistake.”

Clara looked at her.

“What mistake?”

“He underestimated how much people loved me.”

Thomas looked at Elizabeth.

Emma looked at Elizabeth.

Clara understood.

Three people.

Three lives changed because of one person trying to destroy the truth.

“Then how did you escape?”

Elizabeth looked at the door.

“Someone helped me.”

Clara frowned.

“Who?”

Elizabeth hesitated.

Before she answered, Thomas spoke.

“The same person who brought Richard here.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Richard helped you?”

“No.”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“Not Richard.”

She looked at Clara.

“His daughter.”

Clara remembered Thomas’s words.

Richard Vale has a daughter.

The person who protected your secret.

“Who is she?”

Elizabeth looked at Emma.

Clara slowly turned.

Emma’s face was filled with fear.

Not fear of Clara.

Fear of what came next.

“No.”

Clara whispered.

Emma looked at her.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

Emma swallowed.

“When it was safe.”

Clara laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Safe.”

She shook her head.

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

Emma looked down.

“Because we were afraid of losing you.”

Clara stared at her.

“You were my best friend.”

“I know.”

“You knew my entire life was a lie.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew your life was protected.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Emma accepted the pain in her words.

“No.”

Clara turned back toward Elizabeth.

“Your enemy’s daughter saved you?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elizabeth looked at Emma.

“Because she discovered the truth about her father.”

Clara looked between them.

“Emma…”

Emma finally spoke.

“My real name is not Emma Lawson.”

The room went silent.

“My name is Emily Vale.”

Clara felt the air disappear.

Richard Vale’s daughter.

The person she trusted most.

The person who had always been beside her.

The person who had hidden the biggest secret.

Emily wiped her tears.

“My father destroyed a lot of lives.”

Her voice shook.

“But he did not know everything.”

Clara watched her.

“What did he not know?”

Emily looked at Elizabeth.

“That I had chosen you.”

A long silence followed.

Then Emily reached into her purse.

She removed a small object.

An old key.

She placed it on the table.

Clara looked at it.

“What is that?”

Emily answered quietly.

“The key to the place where your mother hid the evidence.”

Thomas looked alarmed.

“You still have it?”

Emily nodded.

“I kept it because I knew one day Clara would need to know the truth.”

Clara stared at the key.

A lifetime of secrets had led to this moment.

Her mother was alive.

Her best friend was her enemy’s daughter.

Her father had protected a truth that could destroy powerful people.

And somewhere, hidden away for twenty years, was the evidence that started everything.
